Abstract

Abstract. It is not enough to teach a language without acknowledging culture while teaching English as a Foreign Language, so teachers must be culturally conscious of incorporating culture into their teaching activities. This research was conducted to investigate the cultural awareness of pre-service EFL teachers in the higher education context. The aim is to find out the cultural understanding of cultural differences of the pre-service EFL teachers. This research used a qualitative research design. The participants of this research were 20 pre-service EFL teachers who had attended the PPG program in 2018. A questionnaire by Marx and Moss (2011) on My Cultural Awareness Profile (MyCAP) was adopted as an instrument of this research. The study's findings showed that the participants had a significant cultural awareness and understanding of cultural differences. However, due to the limited time and approach employed in the study, the researchers hope that more researchers will be attracted to look further into intercultural understanding in higher education with different subjects and approaches. Keywords: Cultural Awareness, Cultural Understanding, Cultural Differences, Pre-Service EFL Teacher

Abstract

This study explored Mendeley-based thesis supervision models to avoid plagiarism. The focus of this study was four issues: i) Selecting the topic and deciding the thesis title; ii) Browsing and managing references; iii) Validating references; and iv) Matching ideas between the students’ arguments and citing other authors’ statements. This study employed a qualitative method with a case study design to explore an in-depth understanding of the Mendeley-based thesis supervision model to avoid plagiarism. Researchers posted a call for an interview in social media group for an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturer in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. There were 15 EFL lecturers applied, but only four met the criteria. The criteria for choosing the participant are based on the Mendeley presentation experience, full-time teaching career, and willingness to participate in virtual interview sessions. There were two participants from a public university, one was from a private university, and the other was from a state Islamic university. A semi-structured interview technique was applied in this study. This study employed thematic analysis to explore participants' responses. This study reported that supervisors experienced different cases from the four items identified in this study. They are: i) Selecting the topic and deciding the thesis title, ii) Browsing and managing references; iii) Validating references; and vi) Matching ideas between the students' arguments and citing other authors’ statements.

Abstract

This study aims at determining how Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, and Facilitating Conditions influenced Behavioral intentions to use technology in learning English Pharmacy. This study employed a sample of 100 pharmacy students who were enrolled in an English pharmacy course. The samples were chosen using the quota sampling technique. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model was performed to measure students' acceptance of the use of technology in this study. The findings of this study indicated that the four aspects mentioned above, such as Performance Expectations, Effort Expectations, Social Influences, and Facilitation Conditions, have a favorable impact on students' Behavioral intentions when using technology to learn English Pharmacy. However, only 40% of the four factors could explain the influence on Behavioral intention. The impact of this study is that it can lead the way and serve as a reference for future research on the UTAUT approach in a larger scope. In addition, the university should be able to increase the benefits and usability of technology as a learning resource by developing its own Learning Management System (LMS), which is easy to use.

The objectives of the research are to get information about the profile of the students’ English proficiency level as a graduation requirement at the English study program and non-English study programs and the factors hampering the development of the students’ English proficiency. This research employed descriptive method involving 201 fifth semester students of S1 program. The instruments used were the English proficiency test (EPT) of diagnostic TOEFL and a questionnaire for students. The research result showed that the TOEFL mean scores were still very low compared to the required scores. For the students of English study program, the mean score gained was 468 of 500 and for students of non-English study program, the mean score was 370 of 450. The other finding was about the factors hampering the development of the students’ English proficiency. The factors include the students’ insufficient effort in learning and practicing English independently, the instructional English language which was not yet optimally used by the English lecturers, the students who very rarely attended English course/training, and the rare effort to familiarize the EPT (TOEFL) to the students. These factors should be considered by the policy makers if they expect that the students have good English proficiency as well as high global competitiveness..
