Abstract

This study examined how students' perceptions, experiences, and recommendations illuminate the impact of social media on students' learning. Qualitative research design was used and data was collected using open-ended questionnaires with 11 students at Universitas Tidar. Thematic analyses were used to ascertain that social media sites, such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit, were an important part of their learning practices and processes, and that the social media sites were important for student access to learning materials, online conversation, and collaboration with peers. However, students were also aware of the difficulties with social media, namely digital distraction and peer pressure for social validation. Overall, students thought social media was a positive additive to their education, despite the challenges of social media. Overall, our findings suggest that educational social media utilization needs to be intentional and deliberate and we encourage educators to use social media for content creation that students engage with, and that matches their own preferences for digital engagement and learning.

Abstract

In the context of educational reform in Indonesia, the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum has brought significant changes over the past few decades. A crucial aspect of this transformation is the curriculum for students, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become productive members of society. Launched by the Ministry of Education in 2020, the Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes a more holistic and inclusive educational approach, focusing on student-centered learning and technology use. This study aims to analyze the alignment of the textbook "Bright An English" with the Merdeka Curriculum for second-grade junior high school students, identifying its strengths and weaknesses in supporting English language learning. A qualitative approach was employed, specifically through document analysis. This method is often used to analyze written or visual data to identify specific characteristics or materials, focusing on the English textbook "Bright An English". The analysis revealed that the textbook generally meets the English language competencies outlined in the Merdeka Curriculum. Students are able to engage with various types of texts and develop their language skills effectively. However, areas such as the integration of character values and cultural diversity in the teaching materials require improvement. The findings indicate that "Bright An English" is largely aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum, fulfilling many essential requirements. Despite some shortcomings, the textbook remains a valuable resource for teachers and students, and supplementary materials are recommended to enhance the learning experience. Overall, it provides a solid foundation for English language education at the junior high school level.

Abstract

The increasing presence of multilingual learners in diverse educational contexts has brought new challenges for language teaching worldwide. This literature review aims to synthesize key findings from these three perspectives to clarify recurring challenges, identify pedagogical gaps, and justify the need for innovative approaches to support multilingual education. The review employs a qualitative thematic synthesis of the selected articles, organizing the analysis around common themes such as monolingual teaching ethos, translanguaging implementation, teacher identity, and institutional limitations. The findings show consistent evidence that language teachers often struggle to balance political multilingual policies with classroom realities shaped by monolingual pedagogical traditions. While translanguaging is promoted as a potential bridge between students’ diverse linguistic repertoires and school expectations, its effective practice remains hindered by unclear goals, teacher discomfort, and insufficient institutional support. Moreover, the context of Pakistan illustrates how limited classroom time, lack of exposure, and inadequate training further complicate multilingual teaching practices at the secondary level. Overall, this review underscores the urgent need for systemic teacher training, the development of flexible multilingual pedagogies such as translanguaging, and supportive institutional frameworks to align policy goals with practical realities in multilingual education.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the psychometric quality of a teacher-constructed English final examination test for Grade X students at Senior High School in Sungai Penuh using the framework of Item Response Theory (IRT). The analysis focused on evaluating model fit, item difficulty, and item discrimination parameters across the 1-Parameter Logistic (1-PL) and 2-Parameter Logistic (2-PL) models. Data was collected from students’ responses to 40 multiple-choice items and analyzed using RStudio. The goodness-of-fit results revealed that the 2-PL model provided a better representation of the data, with 36 items classified as fit and only 3 misfitting, compared to the 1-PL model where 32 items fit and 8 misfits. Furthermore, the difficulty parameter (b) indicated that all items were within the acceptable range (–2 ≤ b ≤ +2), with a tendency toward easy to moderate levels. The discrimination parameter (a) demonstrated that most items possessed satisfactory to high discrimination power, although a small number exhibited lower values. These findings confirm that the teacher-constructed test generally meets psychometric standards of validity and reliability, while also highlighting the need for revision of a few misfitting and low-discrimination items. The study provides both theoretical and practical contributions by emphasizing the importance of applying IRT in school-based assessment practices to ensure fair, accurate, and effective evaluation of students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study employs a literature review method that aims to investigate the factors affecting EFL students’ difficulties in writing their undergraduate theses. Writing a thesis in English poses numerous challenges for EFL learners, as it demands strong academic writing skills, sufficient language proficiency, and an understanding of research methodology. The purpose of this research is to identify three dominant categories of influencing factors: linguistic, psychological, and sociocultural. Data were collected by analyzing ten relevant journal articles retrieved from SciSpace, Consensus, and Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish application. The results show that linguistic limitations, psychological barriers such as anxiety and lack of motivation, and sociocultural challenges like insufficient academic support significantly contribute to students' struggles. These findings are expected to assist educators in creating more effective strategies and supportive environments to help EFL students succeed in thesis writing.

Abstract

Technological developments in the world of education provide enormous opportunities to improve students' abilities independently. The use of technology also provides an opportunity for students to be able to search for and learn from various sources without having to deal with the teacher directly. Therefore, this study examined students' perspectives on their English speaking ability through self-recorded videos they made. This opinion can be divided into two parts, namely, the advantages and disadvantages of implementing English learning using self-recorded videos. The method used in this research is qualitative through a descriptive approach. Furthermore, data was obtained through observation of learning activities and interviews regarding deeper perceptions of self-recorded videos. The results of the study show that students have positive views and changes towards increasing their self-confidence in communicating in English; they are also more courageous in providing ideas, creativity, and better speech. However, there are also drawbacks faced by students related to self-project videos, including inadequate technological devices, lack of ideas and reference sources for making videos, internet quota, and amount of time to complete the project. However, even though they experienced challenges in processing their English, their communication skills had improved quite well.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of wall word media in improving students’ vocabulary mastery in SMP Negeri 1 Paguyaman, Gorontalo. Quantitative methods are research approaches that involve the collection and analysis of numerical data to answer research questions or test hypotheses. This method emphasizes the use of statistical analysis to examine relationships between variables and to determine the significance of results. A quasi-experiment is a research design used in this study. This indicates that the use of Wall Word media can improve English vocabulary mastery in students. After exploring the use of Wall word Media in teaching vocabulary to young learners, it can be concluded that this media can be an effective and engaging way to enhance students' vocabulary learning. The visual and interactive nature of Wall word Media can help young learners to remember new words more easily and retain them for longer periods. Furthermore, the tool can be used to introduce learners to different cultures and help them to develop their understanding of diverse perspectives. It is worth noting, however, that Wall word Media should not be used in isolation as the sole method of teaching vocabulary.
