Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe what kinds of error do the students in their writing essay and to describe the reasons why the students make the error in their writing essay at the four semester students of English education Programe of STKIP Taman Siswa Bima. This study applied case study method. The method unsuited to the error analysis procedures (following Chen, 2006:6) informed the processes to analyze the data consisted four steps were Data collection , Identification of errors, Classification of errors into error types, A statement of error frequency, Find out the case of error. The result of this research was concluded that the grammatical errors made by the fourth semester students of STKIP Taman Siswa Bima in writing essay are in Punctuation and Spelling for the highest errors 50.1%, the second is errors in Sentence Pattern 16%, followed by Auxiliaries 6,1%, Preposition 5.26%, Passive voice 4.48%, Verb Tense and Form 4.2%, Subject-verb agreement 4.0%, Articles 4%, Plurality 3.8%, Word order 2.3% and Pronoun 1,1% of 521 errors obtained from their essays. The cause of error based on interview was succession approximation system.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) To know students’ ability in reading English Poetry. (2) To know the difficulties that the student find in reading English Poetry. The data was analyzed by using a quantitative descriptive method. The study data was collected by using some research instruments, such as reading test and interview. The data were tabulated into students’ average scores in five indicators and mean scores. Then, the authors explained the data descriptively. Based on the data findings, the students’ ability to read English Poetry was qualified as “poor”. This was indicated by the score in each part of the students were low, especially in facial expression and body language. Through this study, the authors aimed to help the student to learn how to read English Poetry, and the students hoped to increase their ability to read English Poetry.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the mispronunciation of consonants and the most frequently mispronounced consonants produced by the fifth semester students of the English Education Department at Institut Parahikma Indonesia in the academic year 2020/2021. This research applied descriptive quantitative research method. The participants were 14 students from the fifth semester of English Education Department. The data were collected by using a reading text. The data were analyzed quantitatively through three steps: 1) identifying errors; 2) calculating errors, and 3) drawing conclusion. The result of the research showed that nine (9) consonants were mispronounced by the students and one consonant was error-free. The mispronounced consonants were / v /: (19.5%), / ð /: (18.8%), / θ /: (15.5%), / z /: (14%), / dʒ /: (9%), / ɡ /: (8%), / w /: (6.2%), / r /: (4.6%), / ŋ /: (4.3%) and / b /: (-) were error-free consonant. Meanwhile, The most frequently mispronounced consonants were / v / and / ð /.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the difficulties and the benefits of reciprocal teaching perceived by the students in reading comprehension class, and the strategy in reciprocal teaching that the students prefer the most. This research was qualitative research applying phenomenological approach. The participants of this study were 5 students majoring in English Education Department of Institute Parahikma Indonesia. The data was collected by using semi-structured interview and it was analyzed by using thematic analysis adapted from Given (2018). The result of this study indicated that the difficulties faced by the students are less teacher’s monitoring, students’ interest in learning reading comprehension which makes them bored, self-competence of the students in understanding the text, and the difficulty in unifying their perceptions. The benefits of it that the students perceived are that they become more creative and imaginative, and it is an encouraging method and effective. Furthermore, it can boost their enthusiasm and create collaborative engagement. However in term of the most preferred strategies in reciprocal teaching, most of the students perceived that questioning is the best.

Abstract

Based on the attitude of the learners towards English speaking (Brown, 1993) he said that the learners have negative attitude probably have anxiety in speaking English class. English also is unfamiliar with the learner so that when the teachers give the task through the English communication, almost the learners are speaking by practicing their mother tongue and infrequently practice of English. The study was intended to give a description of the anxiety of the fourth semester students at Health Polytechnics of Makassar in speaking English. The study puts forward two research questions: (1) Whether or not the fourth semester students at Health Polytechnics of Makassar have high or low anxiety towards direct error correction in speaking English? (2) Whether or not the fourth semester students at Health Polytechnics of Makassar have high or low anxiety towards indirect error correction in speaking English?. The study design employed qualitative descriptive method. The population was the fourth semester students at Polytechnic of Makassar. The sample was 50 respondents which were selected based on the random sampling techniques. The data collection was done by distributing the questionnaire which consisted of 20 items to the respondents. The data were analyzed descriptively in percentage and into mean score. The data were followed by interpretation. The data analysis showed; (1) the fourth semester students had very high and high anxiety towards direct error correction in English speaking practice as the aggregate percentage got from strongly agree plus agree was 65 %, undecided was 35 %, and the rest was 2 % disagree, and (2) had very high and high anxiety toward indirect error correction in speaking practice as the aggregate percentage got from strongly agree plus agree was 38 %, undecided was 50 % and rest was 12 % disagree.

Abstract

The present paper sheds light on Indonesian EFL students' perceptions toward learning activities applied in the classroom teaching practice. Classroom activities particularly related to learning activities have been widely accepted as one of factors that influence students’ achievement in learning. In the current study, the researcher attempts to answer three research questions: (1) How important the learning activities in students’ perceptions to facilitate them for learning, (2) what benefits gained from those learning activities? And (3) which learning activities do students perceive to be the most facilitating them in learning? The participants in this study were 21 EFL students, in state university of Makassar. The participant consisted of different term which in the second term, fourth term and sixth term. Survey and open-ended question were developed in collecting data. The researcher analyzed the data through data analysis strategy particularly coding qualitative data. The result of the study analysis showed that the discussion was quite important and both Writing paper/article and Book review were just important, while individual presentation and Quiz were very important activities. Table 3 summarized the students’ perception toward benefits of learning activities. The finding also showed discussion activity to be the most facilitating students in learning.

Abstract

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the English proficiency tests which consists of 4 skills that should be tested including Writing which has two types “writing task 1 and task 2. However, there are many problems that testees face in doing writing such as problem in language use, word choice, punctuation and so on that make them could not pass the test. in this case, the researcher focueses on writing task 1 to know the problems that testees faced. The present study aims at (i) finding out the problems are faced by the testees,(ii) to find out the most frequent problems; and cause of error in language use made by the participants in ELC-IDP Makassar. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, and the total number of the samples were 17. The instrument used for this study was archival documents (testees’ writing). In this case the authors clasify the problems of the testee’s writting into four categories: problem in word choice, punctuation, spelling and language use, then language use is identified and clasified into grammatical area: error of verb, noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, article, preposition, and conjuntion, after that the error analized using procedure of error analysis. The finding indicates that:a total of whole problems are 88 numbers which made by the testees (i) the percentage of problems in word choice is 5 % (4), punctuation 10% (9), spelling 7% (6); (ii) the most frequent problem is error in language use about 78% (69) which the most frequent error is verb area (73%) 50 errors from 69 of total error and; (iii) the causes or error are interference of the learner’s mother tounge, overgeneralization, and false concept hypothesis.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the types and the reason of using Code-mixing by the fifth semester students of English Language and Education Department of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University in the classroom. The research used qualitative methods. The subject in this research was the fifth semester students of English Language and Education Department of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University. This research was identified to determine the type and the reason of using code-mixing proposed by Suwito. The data were collected through audio recording and interview. In analyzing the data, the researcher transcribed, identified and classified. In analyzing the data, several steps were done, namely: transcribing, reading, and coding to choose and sort the sentences which were categorized as code mixing. Then, classifying and analyzing the sentence inti different types of code-mixing in the class room. The result indicated that there were 69 utterances of code-mixing used by the students of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University at fifth semester in teaching and learning activity; 42 code mixing in the form of word insertion, 17 code mixing in the form of phrase insertion, 2 code mixing in the form of hybrid, and 8 code mixing in the form of clause. The study also showed that the reason of using code mixing in the class room which found on the conversation in the class room were; Role Identification which was determined by social condition and educational background; and Varian Identification which was determined by social prestige.

Abstract

This study employed a quasi-experimental approach that aimed to find out the extent of the improvement students' writing ability by using the Four-Square Technique on the descriptive text at students X SMAN 3 Takalar. the authors took 53 samples, 28 students as the experimental group and 25 students as the control group. The study data was obtained by giving a pre-test and post-test and analyzed by using the Dependent Sample T- Test. The result of the data showed that students' writing ability improved. It was proved from score result of tobs (16,673) which was higher than t-table (2.052) and sig. P (0.05) was higher than sig.score (0.000). Students' writing ability improve by 0.1% after using the Four-Square Technique from pre-test mean score was 65.07 and the post-test mean score was 75.14. So, it can be concluded that using Four-Square Technique can improve students' writing ability in writing a descriptive text at students X SMAN 3 Takalar. By using it, students showed that they can be motivated in writing, students more easily generate and organize their ideas into a text so that students’ writing was more organized also easy to understand.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know whether the application of Picture word inductive model improve students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 2 Jikumerasa. In this research, the researcher used quantitative research method with pre-Experimental design of the one group pretest and posttest. The sample of the research was 26 students learning at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Jikumerasa which consist of 7 male students and 19 female students. The data were collected by using 30 items of multiple choices test. The data obtained were analyzed by applying dependent t-test the formula. The result of the analysis show that the average score in posttest X2 = 1818 is greater than score of pretest X1 = 1449, calculation of t-test = 9.39 exceeds the t-table = 1.711 at significant level of = 0.05. Thus the alternative hypothesis (Hα) stating that the use of Picture word inductive model improve students English vocabulary is accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) which stated that the Picture Word Inductive Model could not improve students’ English vocabulary was rejected. The findings suggested that the model serves as an alternative to foster students’ English vocabulary in EFL classroom setting.
