Abstract

The present study aims to examine two cases, namely: (1) the effect of online small group discussion on students' reading comprehension, and (2) students' perception of the effect of online small group discussion on students' reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of online small group discussion on students' reading comprehension, to determine students' perceptions of the effect of online small group discussion on students' reading comprehension. Implementing learning to understand English reading. This research employed quantitative approach. In this study, the authors used purposive sampling to collect the data. This study was attended by 30 participants and was conducted at the English Department of the Indonesian Muslim University, Makassar. The results of this study indicated that the use of Small Group Discussion method in learning English reading comprehension in the network was quite effective in developing students' reading comprehension. It was observed that the learning process was done through online applications such as Zoom and Whatsapp. Overall, these results can be a reflection for teachers and students to be even more active in learning to understand English writing or scripts particularly in an online environment.

Abstract

This research aims to find the function and symbolic meaning of Pakarena Dance in Bugis Makassar society which is the dance movements represented the principal life. The research was conducted in South Sulawesi, Makassar. The data were collected from Library Research. The researcher used descriptive qualitative methods. The research showed the four functions of Pakarena Dance; (1) King's accompaniment (2) The means of Da'wah through its movements (3) The form of Gratitude (4). Entertainment Facilities. And Pakarena Dance has 13 parts symbolic meaning; (1). “Samboritta” (making friends) (2). Jangang leak-leak (rooster crows) (3). Ma'biring kassi(4). Bisei ri lau '(rowing to the east) (5). Angingkamalino (wind without blowing) (6). Anni-anni (spinning yarn) (7). Dalle tabbua (enduring fate patiently) (8). Nigandang (repeatedly) (9) So'nayya (dreaming) (10). Iyolle ', (looking for the truth) (11). Lambassari (disappointment) (12). Leko 'bo'dong(13). Sanro beja '(birth shaman). In this case, sign, idea and object have relation to show the symbolic meaning of Pakarena Dance.

Abstract

This semiotic analysis used Peirce’s triadic theory to interpret the symbols contained in the lyrics and music video of Paramore entitled “Brick by Boring Brick”. The research applied descriptive qualitative method to reach the needed results. There are sixteen signs interpreted either in general interpretation or referred to fairy tales. By interpreted those signs we gain the intended message that the songwriter wanted to deliver, those signs mentioned symbols like “Taste and smells” which meant the essence of the world. Also “Brick by boring brick” which referenced to the fairy tale of “Three little pigs” and fourteen more symbols interpreted in this research. The message which the songwriter tried to spread was for people to stopped dreaming a life just like in fairy tales which was always end in a beautiful ever-after and started learning to live in the reality. A life like in fairy tales are not real and better stopped trying to impress people and start improving instead.

Abstract

English handbooks used in High schools fill with literary works. It is either in poem, prose, or drama. These literary works are human’s creatures both in spoken and written language which fills with implicit meaning beneath the stylistic language used in that literary works. Besides, semantics is a branch of linguistics that studies meaning. This study aimed to find out problems faced by students in the analysis of the semantics meaning of literary works found in English handbooks. This study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The result showed that the problems faced by students lied beneath the determination of semantics meanings and their types found in words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in literary works.

Abstract

This paper sheds light on the acquisition of Indonesian phonemes of a 2-year-old toddler in a natural setting. Data was obtained through qualitative approaches with the aim of investigating communication that occur in language acquisition (phonemes)for toddlers. The findings of the study revealed that in children aging 2 years, all vocal sounds can be pronounced precisely both in the initial, middle and end positions of the word, while consonant sounds there were still some that were not perfectly spoken. For example, phoneme /s/ if it is at the beginning and middle of a word, was pronounced /c/, and at the end position was pronounced /s/. Similar with consonant /l/. This sound can be pronounced perfectly if it is in the starting and final position of a word, in contrast to the middle position where the phoneme was not visible. The phoneme /r/ cannot be pronounced precisely at either the initial, middle or end position of the word.

Abstract

The research aimed were to find out the correlation between classroom management and student’s interest. This research uses quantitative with survey method that apply correlation technique there are two variable in this research, namely dependent variable and independent variable. The independent variable is classroom management while dependent variable is students interest the population of this research as two classes of ABA UMI year 2016-2017. The samples of this research are 20 respondents taken through purposive sampling technique . in analysis the data of this research, the write used ( Correlation ). The findings of this study shows that there is any significant correlation between classroom management and student’s interest at the second grade of social class ABA UMI. This is proved by the value of the pearson product moment is -025 it means the correlation. And classroom management and student’s interest is weak. And correlation classroom management has an important role in learning process because if there is in classroom management the student’s will not be interest in learning process.

Abstract

The study aims (1) to know the benefits of the Barazanji carried out by the Khalawatiyah tradition of the people in Parangloe society, and (2) To know the message of Khalawatiyah tradition about the Barazanji for the Parangloe society. The research designed in this study was qualitative research. The data were processed based on observation, interviews, and documentation. The writer does interviews with informants. The informants that are used in this research are the society of Khalawatiyah’s tarekat for finding the benefits and the message of Khalawatiyah tradition about the Barazanji for the parangloe society. The writer’s findings indicated that the benefits of the Barazanji carried out by the Khalawatiyah tradition of the people in Parangloe society are the Barazanji as inner satisfaction, the barazanji as giving bless a ceremony, the Barazanji as indicted media, the Barazanji for getting a reward, and Brazanji gives information for people to know and preserve the life history of the prophet Muhammad saw. The finding also indicated that the message of Khalawatiyah tradition about the Barazanji for the Parangloe society is the first the people must know the personality of the prophet Muhammad saw and hope to emulate all of about prophet Muhammad saw and the second people always sent shalawat to Muhammad saw.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out more about the meaning of semiotic and the use of emoticon symbols and how students view the use of emoticon symbols on WhatsApp messenger. This study uses a qualitative method. To collect data and determine research subjects, the authors used a questionnaire and observation as research instruments. The results of this study prove that most students mean the meaning of each emoticon symbol on WhatsApp and often use emoticon symbols in chat activities on WhatsApp messenger. They often express feelings and expressions through the symbol emoticon. Two main points are discussed in this thesis. First, the semiotic meaning and use of emoticon symbols, and the second, students' views on the use of emoticon symbols on WhatsApp messenger.

Abstract

The research is the development of Agricultural English teaching materials at Universitas Muslim Indonesia. The purposes of this research are to (1) produce a type of Agricultural English teaching material suitable to be used by the students of Faculty of Agriculture UMI and to (2) discover why the students are learning English. The method used is research and development. The research site was at the Faculty of Agriculture UMI with the number of 50 respondents. The results showed that based on the student responses, 12 out of 42 topics occupy the highest percentage needed for Agricultural English teaching materials. Those 12 topics are as follows: rice, tomatoes, chili, shallots, eggplant, papaya, rambutan, coconut, coffee, land, disease pest, and seeds. Then, the purposes of the students learning English can be categorized into two major groups, namely to anticipate competition in the workplace where the ability to communicate both oral and written is needed and to prepare themselves in the academic field both to complete S1 (undergraduate degree) and to continue their studies S2 (master degree).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore on strengthening character education through e-books for online or distance learning in the times of COVID-19. The present study employs a descriptive qualitative with the aim of being able to provide clear, objective, systematic, analytical descriptions and information, and critical aspect of Character Education-Based E-book for learning during the Covid 19 era in higher education. There were several steps such as collecting the required data, then classification and description were carried out. The sources of data in this study were government policies, books and articles concerning the implementation of distance learning during the covid 19 period and character education. The method used to collect research data is in the form of literary data that has been selected, searched, presented and analyzed. The application of Indonesian e-books based on character education is a solution that can be done to overcome the problems of character education during the COVID-19 era, especially regarding the use of diction and literature. In this e-book character values ​​can be inserted in the introduction, materials, and assignments to provide character education to students. Hence, the e-book was developed based on the curriculum and the values ​​of character education. E-books are provided in online learning and can be studied by students from their homes both online and offline. In order to draw students’ attention, the e-book must be designed to be visually attractive so that the material in it can be learned and easily understood by students.
