Abstract

Nutritional problems remain a major public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas, and contribute to the high risk of stunting among children under five. The utilization of locally available, nutrient-dense foods is one of the key strategies in family- and community-based stunting prevention. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of posyandu cadres, pregnant women, and mothers with toddlers in utilizing Moringa oleiferaleaves as a local superfood to improve family nutrition and prevent stunting in Tabo-Tabo Village, Pangkep Regency. The methods included initial coordination, participant identification and recruitment, knowledge pre-test, nutrition education, practical training on processing Moringa oleifera leaves, post-test, as well as monitoring and evaluation through cadre logbooks in 2 weeks. A total of 30 participants were involved, consisting of 12 posyandu cadres and 18 mothers with toddlers. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge, with the proportion of participants in the good knowledge category rising from 13% before the activity to 77% after the activity. Skills in processing Moringa oleiferaleaves also increased significantly, from 17% to 67% in the good category. Post-activity monitoring indicated that most participants had begun to routinely incorporate Moringa oleifera leaves into their daily family menus. This activity proved effective in improving family nutrition knowledge, skills, and practices through an applicable, affordable, and sustainable local food–based education and training approach, and has the potential to support community-level stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Dislocation is a joint injury that commonly occurs among adolescents due to physical activities and accidents in the school environment. Limited knowledge of first aid management for dislocation may lead to inappropriate initial handling and increase the risk of further injury. This community service activity aimed to improve vocational high school students’ knowledge of dislocation and first aid through audiovisual-based education. The activity was conducted at SMK Tunas Bangsa Ngamprah and involved 53 students. The implementation method included health education using PowerPoint presentations, educational videos, and posters, as well as knowledge evaluation through pre-test and post-test. The evaluation results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 45.5 in the pre-test to 93.5 in the post-test. This result indicates an improvement in students’ understanding of dislocation, its signs and symptoms, and appropriate first aid measures after participating in the educational activity. Audiovisual-based dislocation education can be used as a supportive approach in school health programs to enhance adolescents’ preparedness in dealing with musculoskeletal injuries.

Abstract

Asthenopia, or eye strain, is a condition characterized by a decline in visual performance resulting from excessive accommodative effort, manifesting in ocular, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial symptoms. University students represent a vulnerable demographic due to the high intensity of digital device usage required for academic activities. Left untreated, this condition can lead to serious complications, including the degradation of visual acuity. This program aimed to provide education on the management of asthenopia through the implementation of practical eye exercises. The methods included video-based counseling, procedural demonstrations, and evaluation via return demonstration (redemonstration). Result Initial identification revealed that the predominant complaints were drowsiness during near-work activities (31.8%) and reading inefficiency (5.7%). Post-intervention evaluation indicated a positive response; 55.7% of participants reported that eye exercises were highly effective, while 36.4% found them somewhat helpful in alleviating fatigue. Furthermore, the objective of independence was achieved, with 79.5% of participants demonstrating the ability to perform the exercises independently. In conclusion, eye exercises serve as an effective intervention for reducing asthenopia symptoms and enhancing participant self-efficacy. This program is recommended as a sustainable, self-managed preventive strategy for university students in the digital era.

Abstract

Background: Grandmothers play a crucial role in supporting child growth and development, particularly in family contexts where they are primary caregivers during pregnancy and early childhood. Evidence indicates that although grandmothers significantly influence caregiving practices, their role is often limited by insufficient knowledge regarding balanced nutrition and appropriate infant feeding practices. Limited understanding of stunting, its determinants, and preventive strategies may contribute to suboptimal nutritional practices that increase children’s risk of growth faltering. Objective: This study aimed to enhance grandmothers’ knowledge of nutrition and caregiving practices and to improve their skills in processing local foods into healthy and nutritious meals. Methods: A community-based intervention was conducted using an educational approach combined with a practical cooking class involving 15 participants. Program effectiveness was evaluated through structured observation of cooking-class performance and measurement of knowledge using validated pre-test and post-test instruments. Results: The findings demonstrated a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge scores, increasing from 64 ± 2.51 before the intervention to 89 ± 6.72 after the intervention, with a mean difference of 25 ± 3.74. Evaluation of the cooking-class activities indicated that participant performance was categorized as very good. Conclusion: The intervention effectively improved grandmothers’ knowledge regarding caregiving practices, exclusive breastfeeding, and infant and toddler nutrition, highlighting the importance of empowering extended family members as key agents in stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a common health problem and may affect learning concentration, immunity, and reproductive health. One of the efforts for early detection of anemia is hemoglobin screening. This community service activity aimed to determine hemoglobin levels as an effort for early detection of anemia among female students at Zeinta Elharam Baraca Islamic Boarding School. The screening was conducted using an Easy Touch hemoglobin testing device on 30 participants. The results showed that the mean age of participants was 13.80 years, ranging from 12 to 17 years. Of the 30 students examined, 5 students (16.7%) had hemoglobin levels below normal, while 25 students (83.3%) had normal hemoglobin levels. These findings indicate that some students are still at risk of anemia and require follow-up actions such as nutrition education, periodic hemoglobin monitoring, and appropriate health interventions. Hemoglobin screening can serve as an effective initial step in the early detection of anemia among female students in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Indonesia continues to face a double burden of disease, characterized by the persistence of infectious diseases alongside a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Among these, diabetes mellitus represents an increasing global health threat. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, affecting both productive age groups and the elderly. The risk of developing diabetes in adolescents is exacerbated by the rising prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, including central obesity, elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and glucose dysregulation. However, a peer-to-peer approach is needed to provide counseling regarding prevention because it has been proven effective in increasing knowledge and changing behavior. This community service activity aimed to enhance adolescents' knowledge and understanding of diabetes mellitus through health education. The methods employed included lectures followed by question-and-answer sessions conducted by nurse students as part of a peer group with the assistance of the community service team. Evaluations and observations conducted after the program demonstrated that the health education effectively improved the knowledge and understanding of adolescents at SMAN 7 Mataram regarding diabetes mellitus risk factors.

Abstract

The main problem identified was that many workers still performed work activities using non-ergonomic postures, such as bending for prolonged periods, sitting in low positions, and rarely performing stretching exercises, which increased the risk of back pain and muscle fatigue. This community service activity aimed to improve workers’ knowledge regarding ergonomic working positions as an effort to prevent musculoskeletal disorders among 14 workers at the Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) Purin. The activity included observation, pre-test, ergonomic education using poster media, demonstrations of proper posture and stretching exercises, followed by post-test and evaluation. The results showed improved workers’ knowledge after the intervention. Before the intervention, most workers had a moderate level of knowledge (85.72%), while after the program, 64.29% of workers achieved a high level of knowledge and none remained in low category. Workers also reported a better understanding of proper working methods and the importance of maintaining correct body posture while working. Ergonomic education through poster media and demonstrations effectively increased worker’s knowledge and may help prevent musculoskeletal disorders while promoting occupational safety and productivity.
