Abstract

The Paka Di’a ritual is one of the death traditions in Manggarai culture, rich in spiritual, social, and cultural meanings. This tradition functions as an act of honoring ancestral spirits, strengthening family bonds, and preserving local wisdom. This study aims to understand Paka Di’a as a space of encounter between local culture and the Catholic Church’s tradition through the perspective of inculturation, as well as to explore its significance for the faith life of Manggarai Catholic communities. The research employs a qualitative approach using interviews and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious figures, and local community members. The findings show that Paka Di’a contains values that resonate with Catholic teachings, such as belief in life after death, prayers for the deceased, sacrifice, solidarity, and communal togetherness, manifested in the integration of traditional prayers with liturgical prayers and in communal acts of solidarity. This encounter demonstrates how local traditions can become a medium that enriches expressions of faith and broadens the community’s understanding of the relationship between culture and the Church. Thus, Paka Di’a serves not only as a means of preserving Manggarai cultural identity but also as a medium of inculturation that strengthens and enriches the faith life of Catholic believers in the Manggarai context.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning and function of the Marhata Sinamot tradition in Batak Toba customary marriage and its relationship with Catholic teaching within the framework of the sociology of religion. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach through literature study, it draws on the thought of Durkheim, Weber, Marx, and Berger, as well as Church documents on inculturation. The findings show that Marhata Sinamot functions as a rite that reinforces social integration and kinship cohesion (Durkheim), and reflects actions driven by moral values and family social status (Weber). From Marx’s perspective, sinamot maintains economic relations and resource distribution patterns, while Berger highlights its role in shaping the social construction of reality that provides symbolic legitimacy to kinship structures. Although recognizing positive values such as respect for women’s dignity, family responsibility, and social solidarity, the Catholic Church emphasizes that sinamot does not determine the validity of the sacrament of marriage. The study concludes that Marhata Sinamot remains culturally and religiously relevant when practiced proportionally in line with Church teaching. Recommendations include pre-marital catechesis, dialogue with customary leaders, inculturated liturgical guidelines, and family economic empowerment to support faith formation and the preservation of Batak Toba cultural identity in modern society.

Abstract

The manghobasi tradition in Batak Toba culture represents a form of communal solidarity and mutual assistance deeply rooted in social life. Within the context of Batak Toba Catholic communities, manghobasi is not merely a social act but also an expression of love and ecclesial communion grounded in the teachings of Christ. This study aims to explore the meaning of manghobasi among Batak Toba Catholics and to identify the theological values embodied in this practice. The research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach, focusing on the lived experiences of Catholic believers who practice manghobasi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and Questionnaire, then analyzed using data reduction, meaning categorization, and thematic description. The findings reveal that manghobasi encompasses three essential meanings: (1) as a manifestation of God’s love through selfless service to others; (2) as an expression of ecclesial communion, strengthening solidarity and togetherness within the community; and (3) as a form of inculturated Catholic faith in Batak Toba culture, where Gospel values are embodied in local tradition. Thus, manghobasi bridges faith and culture, serving as a pastoral inspiration for the Church to nurture love and solidarity among the faithful.

Abstract

Marriage in the Catholic Church is characterized by unity and indissolubility. This means that if a marriage in the Catholic Church is one and indissoluble, but a divorce still occurs, the divorce is considered invalid under Catholic Church law. Therefore, the researcher conducted this study to address the rampant divorce cases in society and, of course, to highlight Catholics who undergo civil divorces. Civil divorce can be legalized by the state due to several factors that cause divorce. However, on the other hand, civil divorce makes it very difficult for Catholics to remarry in the Catholic Church. Therefore, divorce itself has a significant social impact in society, for example, it becomes a topic of discussion, especially when the person files for an annulment only to remarry with another person. This case has become a hot topic that the researcher observed in the church circles. In essence, the results of this study are about a civil divorce and the desire to remarry in the Catholic Church, which becomes an obstacle to marriage that is invalid according to the Code of Canon Law. As well as the impact of civil divorce itself. This research employed qualitative methods, including literature review and guidance from Church documents (KHK), as well as participant observation during a six-month stay with the congregation at the station. The researchers also utilized previous scientific research relevant to the research topic. The study's conclusions provide information on the causes of obstacles to marriage under Catholic Church law and the impact of civil divorce on Catholics.

Abstract

The problem in this study is the low involvement of young families in church activities in the Saint Sesilia Parish, Pontianak Archdiocese. This is evident from the minimal participation of families in the celebration of Wedding Anniversary (HUP). Of the 50 family couples recorded in the Diocesan Community Data Integration Base (BIDUK) as families celebrating HUP in that month, only 6 couples participated in the HUP celebration. This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive qualitative method. The research subjects were determined by purposive sampling, consisting of six informants: four young families in the Saint Bernadinus of Siena Community, one Parish Priest of Saint Sesilia Pontianak, and one from the Family Apostolate Section coordinator. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions using triangulation of sources and techniques to ensure data validity. Based on the research results, it was found that young families have a good understanding of the nature of Catholic marriage according to Canon 1055 §1, namely as a sacred covenant that forms a complete life partnership between husband and wife, which is eternal, open to the gift of children, and responsible for educating children in the Catholic faith. The Church through the Parish of Santa Cecilia has tried to carry out pastoral responsibilities as mandated by Canon 1063 by implementing Marriage Preparation Courses (KPP) and HUP celebrations as a form of family accompaniment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the understanding of young families in the St. Bernadinus Siena Community is good, although continuous accompaniment from the Church is still needed and implemented so that young families become more mature in faith, strong in loyalty, and able to become examples as a domestic Church in the community.

Abstract

This article examines the Franciscan spirituality of Saint Francis of Assisi through the lens of peace theology and interreligious dialogue. Amid escalating religious and cultural tensions in today’s world, Francis’ spiritual legacy offers a new paradigm that integrates Christian mysticism with universal peacemaking praxis. This study employs a historical-theological approach, exploring Francis’ encounter with Sultan Malik al-Kamil during the Crusades and its theological significance for interfaith relations. The findings reveal that Franciscan spirituality is not only contemplative but also dynamic and open to interreligious engagement. Its spirit of peace, love for all creation, and simplicity of life provide a unique contribution to a world marked by violence, materialism, and religious exclusivism. This study emphasizes the relevance of Francis’ legacy as a source of inspiration for global dialogue and the building of a culture of peace. Practically, it calls both the Church and multicultural societies to rediscover spiritual values rooted in history to strengthen human solidarity

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of digital media in building the faith of Christians and how media can be effectively utilized as a tool of evangelization in the contemporary era. The main problem studied is the extent to which digital media can be a relevant and impactful means of evangelization in the faith life of modern society, especially the younger generation who are familiar with technology. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature studies, observation of religious digital content, and in-depth interviews with digital ministry actors, such as priests, Catholic content creators, and active social media users. The results show that digital media has great potential in delivering messages of faith creatively, quickly, and widely. However, its effectiveness is highly dependent on the quality of the message, the cultural context of the users, and the active involvement of the ecclesial community. This research confirms that media is not just a tool, but can become a new spiritual encounter space that supports the evangelization process in the digital world.
