Abstract

Stroke is a common degenerative disease in the elderly, which causes a decrease in quality of life because the elderly become dependent on various daily activities. The fatal and permanent effects of a stroke can be prevented if the patient receives prompt and appropriate medical care within 3-5 hours, known as the "golden period." During this period, stroke disease can be overcome faster and the prognosis becomes better. One way to increase public knowledge about the early symptoms of stroke is through health education. This Community Service activity aims to provide an understanding of the FAST method as an effort to detect stroke early in the pre-hospital environment, especially in the family. The activity methods include pre-test, lectures, demonstrations, leaflets, and post-tests. This activity was attended by 24 cadres and the community of Sari Bunga Mas Village. From the results of data analysis, before the intervention was implemented, there were 12.5% of participants who had good knowledge. After the intervention, the number increased to 79.2%, while the rest had sufficient knowledge.  The results of this activity show that cadre members and the community are able to understand and demonstrate the FAST method for early detection of stroke in the family and community environment well.

Abstract

Gestational hypertension typically arises after the 20th week of pregnancy and resolves postpartum. Key risk factors include obesity and diabetes mellitus, and when accompanied by protein in the urine, it may lead to preeclampsia. Pregnant women must recognize early signs of preeclampsia to safeguard both maternal and fetal health. Anemia in pregnant women is also prevalent in West Java, exacerbating the risks of low birth weight and maternal mortality. This study utilized a collaborative approach, emphasizing a pentahelix model involving government, academia, professional organizations, media, and business sectors to enhance health promotion activities. The intervention focused on the socialization of hypertension and anemia prevention among pregnant women, aiming to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. The socialization efforts significantly raised awareness among pregnant women about the risks of hypertension and anemia, along with the importance of early detection and preventive measures. Data from healthcare professionals indicated increased community engagement in maternal health programs, showing a promising trend in reducing related complications. The collaboration across various sectors has shown positive outcomes in promoting the prevention of hypertension and anemia in pregnancy. Continuing these efforts, particularly through health education and community involvement, is crucial for reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal and fetal health outcomes.

Abstract

Trauma resulting from accidents causing bone fractures remains a significant health issue in many countries, both developed and developing. Fractures, especially in the lower and upper extremities, are common outcomes of such incidents. In Indonesia, femur fractures are the most prevalent, with traffic accidents being a primary cause. This study aimed to assess the impact of proper splint application on reducing pain levels in patients at the Karo District General Hospital. The study involved evaluating the knowledge and skills of healthcare workers in applying splints, focusing on pain reduction outcomes. The assessment revealed that the application of splints at Karo District General Hospital had a pain reduction success rate of 49%. The primary issue identified was the insufficient knowledge and skills of healthcare workers in properly applying splints to minimize patient pain. To improve the effectiveness of splint application in reducing pain, training for healthcare workers is essential. Providing this training will enhance their knowledge and skills in using the appropriate splinting techniques for pain management in trauma patients.

Abstract

Discharge planning is an essential process that starts at patient admission and continues through discharge to ensure continuity of care and safety. However, in many healthcare settings, it is often underperformed, limited to providing basic discharge instructions like follow-up schedules. This inadequate approach fails to address patients’ comprehensive needs for at-home care, leading to gaps in post-discharge care and safety. To address this issue, this community service initiative aimed to enhance the quality of discharge planning performed by nurses through education on the Servant Leadership Method, focusing on fostering patient-centered care and empowering healthcare teams. The program was conducted from February 1 to February 10, 2024, at RSUD Banggai Regency. It involved three main phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation phase included developing educational materials and coordinating with hospital management. During the implementation phase, nurses attended workshops, discussions, and simulations focusing on servant leadership principles such as empathy, communication, and patient empowerment. The evaluation phase involved pre- and post-training assessments using structured tools to measure changes in discharge planning practices. The results showed a significant improvement in discharge planning quality after the education program. Nurses demonstrated enhanced understanding and application of servant leadership principles, leading to more comprehensive discharge instructions and better coordination for follow-up care. Patients reported improved clarity regarding their care plans, and nurses expressed greater confidence in implementing discharge procedures. Education on the Servant Leadership Method effectively improved discharge planning practices among nurses at RSUD Banggai. By focusing on empathy and teamwork, this approach enhanced patient-centered care and continuity of care. Further application of this method in broader nursing practices could yield additional benefits for healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
