Abstract

Queue management is a common challenge faced by primary healthcare facilities such as community health centers (Puskesmas), leading to prolonged patient waiting times and low service satisfaction. One solution to improve service efficiency is through queue management training for healthcare workers and administrative staff. The aim of this community service activity was to enhance understanding and skills in managing queuing systems to create a more structured and responsive service flow that meets patient needs. This community engagement activity utilized a participatory-educational approach and was conducted at Saitnihuta Public Health Center, Doloksanggul Subdistrict, Humbang Hasundutan Regency. The implementation methods included initial observations, training module development, interactive discussions, and hands-on simulations of queue system implementation. A total of 26 participants, consisting of medical personnel and administrative staff, took part in the training. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests, as well as satisfaction surveys to assess the effectiveness of the training. The results showed that all participants completed the training and actively engaged in the activities. Participants were able to understand the basic concepts of queue management, identify effective management strategies, and demonstrated enthusiasm in implementing changes such as separating service flows and utilizing simple queueing technologies. There was a notable improvement in both understanding and readiness to implement more efficient queuing strategies. The queue management training successfully improved participants’ knowledge and awareness of the importance of effective queue management. It is recommended that similar training be conducted regularly and accompanied by follow-up mentoring to ensure the sustainability of efficient and patient-friendly service systems.

Abstract

Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of physical disability in Indonesia, with a prevalence that continues to increase annually. Impaired physical mobility due to stroke results in decreased movement ability, primarily caused by muscle weakness and body imbalance. Although various interventions have been applied in nursing practice, there is still a research gap regarding the effectiveness of combining passive Range of Motion (ROM) exercises and mirror therapy in improving the physical mobility of ischemic stroke patients. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of managing physical mobility impairment through a combination of passive ROM and mirror therapy in ischemic stroke patients. This study employed a case study design with a nursing care approach. The subject was a patient diagnosed with ischemic stroke undergoing treatment at Prof. Dr. Soerojo Hospital, Magelang. Data were collected in June 2025 using nursing assessment forms, muscle strength observations, and documentation of interventions and evaluations. The intervention was carried out over three days using a structured application of passive ROM and mirror therapy. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing the patient's muscle strength before and after the intervention. This study obtained ethical approval from the educational institution and hospital. The results showed that the patient experienced an improvement in left extremity muscle strength from scale 0 (no muscle contraction) to scale 1 (visible muscle contraction without movement), indicating enhanced mobility function. This finding was supported by the nursing evaluation table, which showed improved movement ability during the three-day intervention. Compared to previous studies, these findings are consistent with the known effectiveness of mirror therapy in stimulating neuroplasticity, while passive ROM helps maintain joint flexibility and muscle tone. However, challenges such as patient fatigue and limited implementation time posed obstacles to therapy continuity. This study concludes that the combination of passive ROM and mirror therapy is effective in addressing physical mobility impairments in ischemic stroke patients and can serve as an alternative intervention in rehabilitative nursing practice, especially in stroke care units. Nevertheless, further research with larger sample sizes and longer intervention periods is needed to generalize these findings.

Abstract

Nutrition during the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK), starting from pregnancy to the child’s second birthday, is a critical period that determines the quality of a child’s growth and development. Low maternal knowledge regarding 1000 HPK nutrition is one of the main factors contributing to the risk of stunting in children. This study aims to analyze the effect of nutrition education on improving the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of pregnant women in preventing stunting in the working area of Matiti Community Health Center, Humbang Hasundutan Regency. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group approach. The population consisted of 149 pregnant women, with a total sample of 60 participants divided into intervention and control groups using purposive sampling. The intervention was delivered through lectures and poster media over a two-week period. The variables measured were knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women. A standardized questionnaire was used, and data were analyzed using the Paired Samples Test. The results showed a significant improvement in the intervention group after the education session, with the mean knowledge score increasing from 10.83 to 15.93 (p = 0.000), attitude from 21.06 to 33.10 (p = 0.000), and practices from 4.36 to 8.93 (p = 0.000). In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes. The education intervention using lectures and posters proved effective in enhancing pregnant women’s nutritional behavior. It can be concluded that 1000 HPK nutrition education significantly improves the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women. It is recommended that such educational programs be widely implemented by healthcare workers as a strategic effort to prevent stunting, especially in areas with high prevalence.

Abstract

Pressure ulcers are a serious health issue commonly found in patients with prolonged bed rest, particularly stroke patients. These wounds pose a risk of infection, increase morbidity and mortality rates, and prolong hospitalization. One natural therapeutic alternative increasingly used is Aloe vera gel, known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and ability to accelerate tissue regeneration. The aim of this community service project was to determine the effect of Aloe vera application on changes in the severity of pressure ulcers in hospitalized patients. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The subjects were all stroke patients with pressure ulcers at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, totaling 20 individuals selected through total sampling. The intervention involved applying Aloe vera gel once daily during the treatment period. The instrument used was an observation sheet for ulcer grading based on standard pressure ulcer scales. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test to assess changes in ulcer severity before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in pressure ulcer grades after the application of Aloe vera. Prior to the intervention, 15% of patients had grade 4 ulcers; post-intervention, no patients remained in grade 4. Meanwhile, the percentage of patients with grade 3 ulcers increased from 25% to 40%, indicating tissue recovery and wound healing progression. Statistical analysis yielded a p-value of 0.000, indicating a significant effect of Aloe vera application on the severity of pressure ulcers. In conclusion, Aloe vera application has a positive effect on pressure ulcer healing and can be considered a practical and affordable herbal therapy alternative. It is recommended that the wider community, especially families caring for bedridden patients, consider using Aloe vera in the care of mild to moderate wounds, while continuing to consult healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Increasing life expectancy has led to an increase in the number of older people, with the risk of psychological problems such as depression. Depression in the elderly, especially those living in institutions, is a serious concern because it is related to conditions of social isolation, loss of spouse, and low activity involvement. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the level of elderly depression at the Binjai Cengkeh Turi Elderly Home. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with a population of 30 elderly over 65 years old as a sample. Data collection was carried out through the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire consisting of 15 items, and relationship analysis using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents were aged 65-75 years, female, and unmarried. A total of 93.33% of the elderly experienced symptoms of depression, with most of them being at a moderate level of depression. The level of social support was mostly in the moderate category (96.67%). Statistical tests showed no significant relationship between age and social support on the level of depression. This study concluded that although the majority of elderly people showed symptoms of depression, there was no significant relationship between social support and age with the level of depression. It is recommended that further research consider other psychosocial variables such as motivation, family relationships, and physical health conditions.

Abstract

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the main causes of morbidity and death in Indonesia. Prevention and control of PTM requires the active role of Pos Pelayanan Terpadu (Posyandu) cadres. However, low self-efficacy of cadres often becomes an obstacle in carrying out these tasks. Therefore, the aim of this community service is to increase the capacity and self-efficacy of cadres in efforts to prevent and control NCDs. This community service uses a participatory training approach aimed at increasing cadres' self-efficacy. A total of 30 cadres were selected as respondents through purposive sampling techniques. Inclusion criteria include active cadres in posyandu, aged 20–60 years, and willing to take part in the entire series of training. Activities were carried out in the form of intensive training which includes material delivery, group discussions, simulations and evaluation. Self-efficacy measurements were carried out before and after the intervention using the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) questionnaire. Data analysis was applied to see changes in cadre self-efficacy categories before and after training. The results of this activity showed that at the time of the pretest, most of the cadres were in the medium category, 21 people (70%) and 4 people low (13.3%). After the training, there was a significant increase in the good self-efficacy category, namely to 20 people (66.7%) and there were no cadres in the low category with a p value = 0.001. It can be concluded from this community service activity that participatory-based training can increase the self-efficacy of Posyandu cadres in preventing and controlling NCDs.

Abstract

Cognitive development in early childhood is a critical foundation for learning success. However, data show that many Indonesian children under five have not reached their optimal cognitive potential. One method of stimulation that can be applied is Brain Gym exercises, specifically double doodle and cross crow movements. This study applied a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design without a control group. A total of 21 children aged 4–5 years at Dharma Wanita 1 Darungan Kindergarten were selected using total sampling. The intervention lasted two weeks, consisting of 4 sessions of Brain Gym double doodle (30 minutes) and 4 sessions of cross crow (15 minutes). Cognitive development was measured using observation sheets and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: Before the intervention, most children (81.0%) had fair cognitive development. After the intervention, the majority (90.4%) were categorized as having very good development. The Wilcoxon test showed a significant effect with a p-value of 0.001 (p ≤ 0.05), indicating a significant impact of the intervention on children's cognitive development.  Brain Gym double doodle and cross crow effectively stimulate integration between the brain's hemispheres through increased neural activity in the corpus callosum, improving cerebral blood flow and oxygenation. These findings support the use of these exercises as a simple and enjoyable stimulation method at home and school.

Abstract

The problems of anaemia and malnutrition remain major challenges faced by adolescent girls in Indonesia, including in Kota Palopo. This community engagement programme aimed to improve awareness, knowledge, and nutritional status of adolescent girls through balanced nutrition education and the provision of Iron Supplement Tablets (TTD) at SMPN 10 Kota Palopo. The implementation methods included interactive counselling, group discussions, and supervised TTD consumption. The primary target was 50 adolescent girls, with the involvement of teachers, health professionals, and the Kota Palopo Health Office as partners. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests of knowledge as well as monitoring adherence to TTD consumption.  The results demonstrated a significant increase in students’ knowledge of balanced nutrition and anaemia, along with an improvement in adherence to TTD consumption from 80% to 95% after the programme. In addition, close collaboration was established between the school and the health office in promotive and preventive efforts for adolescent health. This programme strengthened cross-sectoral synergy, fostered a healthy living culture within the school environment, and served as a model intervention that could be replicated in other schools. Carefully planned educational interventions, involving various stakeholders and supported by continuous monitoring and evaluation, have proven effective in improving the health quality of adolescent girls. The main recommendation is the need for regular implementation of nutrition education and guidance in schools to ensure the sustainability of healthy behavioural changes among students.
