Abstract

The writer is interested to explore Mandau as the traditional weapon in East Kalimantan, especially in Tunjung-Benuaq. Mandau is the identity of Dayak tribes who inhabit in Kalimantan Island. In this article, the writer would like to describe about components and the process of making Mandau and the meaning of the symbols in Mandau in Dayak Tunjung-Benuaq tribes. The writer finds at least five kinds of accessories in a Mandau, they are a small knife, a woven rattan, a belt rope, hair and beads. Actually, not all the accessories in Mandau have a meaning or a symbol, but only a woven rattan and hairs on the sheath of a Mandau has symbol and a meaning according to local beliefs in a Dayak Tunjung-Benuaq tribe. Accessories like a small knife, a woven rattan, a rope belt and beaded are only added to the beauty purpose or for aesthetic. A small knife has a function as a carving tool and as back up weapon. That knife is put at the inside of the sheath. The woven rattan has a function as a belt to drape Mandau on waist. The woven rattan motif has a shape like circle. This circle means a balance of nature (based on the interview with Simon Malat). The last accessory is hairs on the hilt of a Mandau. According to local beliefs, the accessories mean bravery. The hair on the hilt of a Mandau symbolizes the bravery level of the owner. The people with a lot of hair in his Mandau will be more respected in society because the hair, a long time ago, was used on the hilt of a Mandau that came from mengayau ceremony.

Abstract

The Covid-19 outbreak has forced students to study from home and switched from offline learning to online learning. This study inquired about the preferences and opinions of language school students majoring in English towards online and offline learning. The students filled out a questionnaire at the end of the second semester of their fully online classes. The results indicate that they preferred the combination of online and offline learning and favored face-to-face more than online learning when they worked in groups. They also tended to prefer offline classes to learn the productive skill of speaking. The receptive skill of listening was deemed to be best taken online.  Offline classes were still considered to be easier to complete and help them perform better than online classes which they thought to have lower course depth and quality and more difficult tests and activities.

Abstract

This research concentrates on the floutings of Grice’s maxims found in the creation of verbally expressed humor in an American situational comedy entitled Friends season 9. Therefore, this research aimed to find out how flouting Grice’s maxims might contribute to creating some humorous conversations on Friends season 9. The transcripts of the characters’ utterances from Friends season 9 served as the data for this study. In order to answer the research question, the qualitative method is used in analyzing the data in the form of words. The findings show that all of Grice’s maxims were flouted in creating some of the humor of the sitcom; there are 86 floutings found. The most frequently flouted maxim was the maxim of Quality (36 times). The results also reveal that by applying the three major theories of humor (incongruity, superiority, psychic release), flouting Grice’s maxims might create humor because of three reasons. The first reason is that the floutings show/illustrate the character’s defects or suffering. There are misfortunes or unpleasant experiences of the sitcom’s characters that the audience laughs at (superiority-based humor). The second reason is that the floutings go against the expectation from the audience that what happens in the sitcom is different from what is expected (incongruity-based humor). The final explanation is that the floutings present a sexually-related subject. By presenting the subject, laughter is evoked by the relief from the removal, albeit momentary, of the restraint (psychic release-based humor). The objectives of the study are to find out the portrayal of identity problem in the poems and the poets’ attitude and world view. The study employs sociological approach and Pricilla B.P Clark’ literary sociology as the theory and library research as the method of collecting data. The results show that the racism faced by African Americans in America and their self-identification and position as American citizens have put them in identity problem. Meanwhile, the poets, though in different attitudes, have shown their optimism that the African Americans will not face racial discrimination and gain equality in the future.

Abstract

Debating what works can be included in the study of Asian literature has given us difficult yet interesting discussion. This paper aims at comparing and contrasting the three literary works to propose what should be included in the consideration of which work should be included in the study of Asian literature. The three texts are selected as to meet the three differences: the first work is written by Asian writer and originally written in English; the second work is written by Asian writer but translated into English; and the third work is written by non-Asian writer but uses Asian setting. The methods applied in the research are the library research as the method for collecting the data, and the descriptive analytical method as the method of analyzing the data. Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day (1989) which has won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction tells a story of a very dedicated English buttler named Stevens. It does not present Japanese story nor setting. Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood (1987) presents us Japanese story of Toru Watanabe and his love relationships with Naoko and Midori with the Japanese setting. David Mitchell’s Number9dream (2001) presents us the experience of Eiji Miyake’s search of his father in Japan. The considerations for a work to be eligible as part of Asian literature should first go with the story and the theme of the work, then with the original language of the novel and finally the background of the author. As a conclusion, among these three works, I propose that Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood is best representing Japanese literature.

It was a descriptive qualitative research. Data were obtained from observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The results showed that the implementation of online learning in the Speaking 2 class ran well. The students could follow the instructions given online by the lecturer, and they could apply their knowledge by taking part in class activities, class assignments, and class exams. The lecturer supported the students exactly whenever they needed it. The online learning at the language school, which combined Google Classroom and Zoom Meetings, could make the learning process more optimal. However, the effect of online learning for Speaking class on the students’ outcomes could be not very satisfying.
