This research was intended to examine if a Javanese cultural trait “sungkan” affects students’ willingness to speak (WTS) in English. Questionnaires of closed and open-ended questions were distributed to obtain information around sungkan and its association with WTS from 12 lecturers (the group of seniors) and 15 college students of English (the group of juniors). The amount of sungkan and WTS in English in different speaking events was determined. The results, first, show that unlike the juniors, the seniors still dearly hold sungkan. When fronted with events that signified the importance of the practice of sungkan, the senior repondents outperformed the juniors in adhering to the cultural trait. Second, for both groups, sungkan proves to affect their WTS in L2 (English) especially with the seniors, the well-acquainted speaking partners, and the people of power. The more distant the status is, the more sungkan is observed and if less or no personal identification is detected, less sungkan is pronounced and the WTS in L2 (English) increases. In conclusion, the rate of sungkan correlates with the level of WTS among these Javanese learners of English.

Language and social interaction are in accordance with the existing norms in society. By paying attention to these norms, we are expected to also pay attention to the choice of words that will be used in communication. In informal situations, swearing words are often used to respond to conversations on many social networks. One of them is Twitter. The phenomenon of using swearing words is found on the Twitter account called @gitlost or Developers Swearing. The research attempts to identify and describe the type and function of swear words used in that account. In collecting data, swear words were collected by observing all tweets according to a predetermined time span, then classified to find out the types of swear words and the function of swear words used based on the theory of Ronald Wardhaugh and Lars‐Gubbar Andersson and Richard Hirsch. The results of this study indicate that swear words are used to express feelings. Swear words are not only used to express anger but also happiness. This research shows that swear words are used based on their functions as expletive, abusive, humoristic, and chronic.

The Covid-19 Pandemic has affected human life in various aspects. Study and work in the year of 2020 to 2021 had to be done fully online. This condition has pushed people to improve their digital skills so that they could continue working, learning, and communicating efficiently and effectively in any situation. Digital capability should indeed be developed because it has become a requirement for any endeavor in the future. Students have been among those whose digital skills must be upgraded. The pandemic has forced them to increase their digital capabilities. This research was conducted to determine digital literacy of STBA LIA Yogyakarta students pre- and post-the Covid-19 pandemic. Ninety (90) students filled out a survey concerning their digital skills before and after the pandemic. This quantitative descriptive research was to see the increase in the 5 elements of student digital capabilities as proposed by JISC. The findings showed that students' abilities in the five elements have improved quite a lot. The number of students with ‘good; and ‘very good’ abilities increased and the number of students with ‘weak’ and ‘very weak’ abilities decreased. Students with ‘good’ and ‘very good’ abilities after the pandemic were evenly distributed across four elements. A slight increase was indicated in the digital creation, problem solving and innovation abilities, albeit still in the ‘average’ category both before and after the pandemic.

A good leader should have particular qualifications to lead a team in gaining its purpose successfully. Otherwise, problems or conflicts will arise that may fail the team. The classic novel of Mochtar Lubis’ Harimau! Harimau! deserves to be explored for it depicts the depravity of a leader that leads his team to suffering and death. This study aims to elaborate the factual structure and themes of the novel Harimau! Harimau and Wak Katok’s leadership using the structural approach and Daniel Goleman’s theory on emotional intelligence. The research has two findings. First, the story presented in an organic unity shows the plausible interrelated factual structure of character, plot, and settings. Second, the quality of Wak Katok’s emotional intelligence as a leader shows that Wak Katok lacks self-awareness (self-confidence, self-acceptance, setting realistic goals), lacks self-regulation (trustworthiness and integrity), no self-motivation (optimism) and empathy, and lacks social skills (maintaining communication).
