Abstract

Online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic that has been going on for more than 4 semesters or 2 years in Indonesia might have made students feel no longer motivated to participate in online meetings. Problems with the internet and technology, heavy workload, as well as lack of student-student and student-teacher interactions have become the main reasons for students feeling demotivated as revealed by previous studies. This research was to examine the motivation of college students in STBA LIA Yogyakarta in participating in online learning on Zoom and to investigate the reasons that might demotivate them to join Zoom meetings. Questionnaires and a forum group discussion (FGD) were carried out to collect data. Descriptive analytical method was then used to analyze their responses to questions concerning motivation in the survey, and a cross tabulation analysis was to analyze the relationship between students who were demotivated and the reasons why they were less motivated towards Zoom meetings. The results indicated that most of the respondents were still motivated to take online lectures. Yet, such reasons as problems with the internet connectivity, the lecturers, and the classmates also contributed to make students less motivated.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was to investigate rates of extramural English (EE) activities among college students of English in an EFL (English as a foreign language) context of Indonesia correlated with several factors such as perceived English competence, genders, and amount of use of different language skills. As many as 161 respondents from 7 English departments across Indonesia took part in this research by responding to a set of questionnaires developed in Google Forms and distributed to the student respondents through WhatsApp groups, emails, and Facebook with the help of their lecturers. The results indicate that first, all respondents did EE activities with various degrees of intensity with a similar pattern of choice activities across levels of students’ perceived English competence. Second, EE receptive skill activities were more frequently practiced than productive ones. When all skills are correlated against perceived competence, the reading showed the highest value of the correlation index (0.612). Reading activities also were the most practiced regardless of the level of competence. This research also found that male students were more active in EE use. Next, most respondents showed more frequency of online EE activities than offline ones. They did not, however, do much face-to-face (FTF) communication when outside the classroom. In this respect, providing more motivation and more frequency for virtual EE practice should be necessary to promote beyond EE use. School’s recognition of students’ EE activities thus beyond classroom learning, has to be enabled. This way, a composite model of formal-informal learning will help the process of the acquisition of English to the maximum. Abstract

The study talked about women representation and Wilde’s ideology regarding women as portrayed in Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance. The study was carried out using gender approach and specifically employed existentialist feminism and genetic structuralism theories. The results showed that there were three types of women represented in the play including a new woman, a rebellious woman, and an independent woman. Meanwhile, based on the discussion, regarding the human facts and his world view depicted in the play, Oscar Wilde’s ideology was equality. Abstract

Abstract The title of this research is “Auggie’s Inferiority Complex and Its Impacts toward His Social Life as depicted in R. J. Palacio’s Novel Wonder”. This research uses psychological approach by Rohrberger & Woods and the theory of Individual Psychology by Alfred Adler. The main objective of this research is to find out the impacts of inferiority complex on the main character, Auggie. To collect the data for this research, the researchers use library research to help the researchers find the data related to the main goal of the research. All the data is taken from the novel Wonder written by R. J. Palacio. The result of this research is that Auggie’s inferiority complex gives some impacts such as he becomes an introvert, insecure, secretive, and antisocial individual. Abstract

This research aims to identify which flowers are mentioned in the Scriptures and what the meanings are represented by the flowers (metaphors of the flowers). The data are gathered from the Scriptures itself and from other sources on the meanings/symbolism of flowers. They are analysed using the theories of semantics, metaphors, morphology, pragmatics, semiotics, and philosophy. The result shows that there are three kinds of flowers mentioned in the Scriptures, that is: Rose, Rose of Sharon,and Lily of the Valley.The rose symbolizes love, joy, and purity, the rose Sharon symbolizes humility and modesty, and Lily of the valley symbolizes hope and prosperity. Abstract

One of the processes that should be taken in the process of translation is reviewing the translation. This step must be taken before a translation product becomes the final text of the translation. In that process, peer feedback is needed. This article is research about the use of peer feedback in the process of reviewing student translations. The research was qualitative research. It was conducted based on the activities of a translation class in STBA LIA Yogyakarta. The research aims to see whether there is an improvement in the final results of student translations on their translation products based on their peer feedback. In this research, students are asked to translate some Indonesian texts into English. The translation then was given some comments and suggestions by their peers before they revised the translation to be the final product. The data were taken based on the students’ translation products. The peer feedback and Componential analysis theory are used as the basis of analysis in this research data analysis. The results showed that peer feedback could not be used as a basis for improving translation results due to the same difficulties among peers themselves over problems in the process of selecting and restructuring translating text from Indonesian as a source language to English as a target language. The role of the lecturer in this matter is still needed in Translation Class at STBA LIA Yogyakarta.

Abstract

In this article, the writer wants to observe and learn about the wedding ceremony in Solo, Central Java called Basahan. The main objective of this article is to know the symbolic meaning of Basahan clothes and procession so readers can understand about the meanings which contain in this wedding ceremony. This article also purposes to preserve some local wisdoms especially which comes from Java such as lamaran (proposal), srah-srahan (giving some presents to the bride woman), sangat (finding the lucky day), etc. The writer used observation method in collecting data. Besides, some interviews were held to get more data authentically from a resource who knew about the symbolic meaning of Basahan clothes and Basahan procession.The writer also did library research to get some references about symbolic meanings of Basahan clothes and procession. From the observation, the writer found many symbolic meanings in the procession and Basahan clothes which are worn by the bridegroom such as kampuh (a cloth which has animal and plant motif), semekan (cloth which is used as a breast cover for woman), kuluk mathak (Javanese cover head which is worn by the groom), keris ladrang (Javanese traditional weapon). Basically, those symbolic meanings might affect the bridegroom’s life.

Abstract

The writer wants to study tembang Macapat. The objectives of this article are to understand more about tembang Macapat and to know the kinds and the meaning of tembang Macapat. In this graduating article, the writer use two methods they are library research and interview. In this article the writer found that there are eleven kinds of tembang Macapat :Maskumambang, Mijil, Sinom. Asmaradhana, Kinanthi, Dhandhanggula, Pangkur, Durma, Pucung, Gambuh and Megatruh.The meanings can be classified into these themes: about kingdom, traditional dance and love.

Abstract

This article is about the history of Apeman, Babad Dalan, and Rasulan ceremonies and the procession of Apeman, Babad Dalan, and Rasulan ceremonies, the kinds of the ceremonies offerings and the meaning. The purpose of this article is to elaborate the history of the ceremonies, the procession of the ceremonies, the kinds of the offerings and the meaning. In the data collection, I collected the primary data from field research. Field research is done by doing informal interviews, direct observations, and participation in the ceremonies. Secondary data was from library research and internet. The writers used books, magazine, journals and websites to complete the data. From this study, the writers found out that Ki Ageng Giring has many values for Sodo villagers. One of them is that they have passion to maintain and preserve Apeman, Babad Dalan, and Rasulan ceremonies to honor and respect Ki Ageng Giring as the ancestor of Sodo village.

Abstract

Saparan is a ritual which is held annualy in every Safar month. Saparan ritual is celebrated in many areas in Central Java. One of the villages that celebrate this ritual is Candirejo village, in Borobudur Sub-District. In this final paper, the writer is interested in writing about the process of the ritual, which includes the time, the place, the doers, the sequence of the procession, the myth, the offerings and its meaning, the function and the purpose of the ritual. To find out about the details of the ritual, the writer did both field research and library research. As the result, the writer finds that Saparan ritual in Candirejo village usually lasts in 3 days. Many activities are carried out during the Saparan ritual celebration, such as: cleaning the village together, sedekahan, kenduri, tumpengan, pengajian, gebyar rebana, traditional dance performanced like Jathilan, Ndayak’an and Pentul-Tembem dance, and the ritual is closed by the puppet show. Every activity in the Saparan ritual is always accompanied with the offerings that consist of some foods and other things as symbols that describe the relationship between humans and God. The purposes of the Saparan ritual are a way to refuse all kinds of disaster and a way to thank God for having given them the harvest and prosperity. Besides, the functions of the ritual are as the effort to keep the tradition, introduce it to the young generation and as an effort to keep the togetherness of all the villagers in Candirejo village. By this paper, the writer hopes that the readers can get more additional information about the culture heritage in Indonesia, especially about Saparan ritual in Candirejo village. Then hopefully, they will be able to appreciate the traditional cultures as a heritage of Indonesia.
