Abstract

Metaphors were frequently found in songs and raised curiosity among the listeners to find out the true meaning. The songs released by Madison Beer are interesting to be discussed. Madison Beer is a young American singer, model, and songwriter who is known worldwide. She released her debut single “Melodies” in 2013. In 2018 Beer released her debut EP, “As She Pleases”. Her songs are full of romantic, yet sad stories relate to real life of female teenagers. The writer applied library research and qualitative descriptive research which intentionally reveals the types of metaphors in her two selected songs; “Follow The White Rabbit” from her Album Life Support, and “Reckless”, a single from Silence Between Songs. The objective of this research is conducted by applying George Lakoff and Johnson’s theory about types of metaphors such as structural metaphor, a metaphor which put one concept into another concept, orientation metaphor which deals with a spatial orientation that is derived from physical and cultural experiences, and ontological metaphor related to the experience of physical objects and substances. The first song “Follow The White Rabbit” tells about a story of a relationship. This song was strongly influenced by the movies The Matrix (Film) and Alice in Wonderland (Film). “Reckless” tells a sad story about betrayal in relationship which is sweetly performed by Beer. Furthermore, the writer found 16 data of metaphors, 9 structural metaphor, 5 ontological metaphor, and 2 orientation metaphor.

Abstract

It is commonly known that there are some problems of education in schools in Indonesia. One of the problems is related to teachers. Teachers, in education managements, can be the agent of change as well as the implementer of the curriculum. In doing those two roles, there are three areas of responsibilities, namely instruction, management, and politics which relates to the policy made by the teacher in the classroom. This paper is going to underline the problems of the teachers’ roles in those three areas seen from the school practice in Indonesia. Since this research discusses the problems and solutions which relate to ideal conditions and ideas, the research applies the library research. The problems of the teacher’s role are viewed based on experiences by 12 teachers who were from different areas in Indonesia but they were in the same class in PPG (Training on Professional Teachers). The data were taken based on by asking them to tell their own experience related to the three areas. Based on the teachers’ experience, the solution is proposed based on some theories which are related to the problems. Further, it will also put forward the possible solution for those problems. The solutions, of course, are proposed by experts whose theories are employed by this research. The result shows that the solution needs some practical trainings and actions in every policy.

Abstract

The study explored the portrayal of patriarchy and the actions taken by the main character, Malala, against it in the literary work. The objectives were to reveal the depiction of patriarchy and to analyse Malala Yousafzai's responses to it in I Am Malala. The study used library research to collect the data and descriptive qualitative analytical method to analyse the data. They were analysed based on Sylvia Walby's theory on patriarchy to see the portrayal of patriarchy and liberal feminism to reveal Malala’s responses to the patriarchy. The portrayal of patriarchy in the book is seen through the experiences of the female characters, especially: Malala’s mother, Malala, Seema, Khalida, Shahida, Shabana, and Moniba. The study identified four out of six forms of patriarchy: patriarchal household production, patriarchal state, male violence, and patriarchal cultural institutions. Meanwhile, patriarchal relations in paid work and sexuality are not found. Additionally, Malala's responses to patriarchy were examined to understand female resistance; they were seen through her participation in various campaigns advocating for girls' education and acts of rebellion against patriarchy. Keywords: patriarchy, radical feminism, responses

Abstract

This article is about the main theoretical framework adopted in the analysis of, especially, pronunciation errors. Such theories as Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, Error Analysis, Language Universals, and Markedness Differential Hypothesis, all of which are interlingual suggest that interlingual differences as well as similarities create pronunciation problems. In this work, several types of errors as postulated by many scholars are presented to intricate with the theories being discussed. Note that first, according to the scholars, not all points of difference between the linguistic structures of L 1 (first language) and L2 (second language) create the same extent of errors. Divergent contrasts (dissimilarities) seem to be more readily acquired than convergent contrasts (similarities). Contrastive analyses are of two versions, strong and weak. Second, in general, cross-linguistic differences, regardless of the error type, should not necessarily hinder learning as long as enough explicit instruction and sufficient exposure to target-like pronunciation are provided.

Abstract

This research was to find out patterns of speaking English activities among Indonesian learners of English. This is to find out their lacks, needs, and wants regarding out-of-class English activities to improve their speaking English proficiency when in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context like Indonesia. As many as 107 respondents of college students of English of 4 universities in Indonesia participated in this research by responding to closed and open items provided in questionnaires. After a deep descriptive qualitative analysis, results show that most respondents perceived that they lacks peaking skills amongst other English skills. They lack chances to speak the language. They wanted to have ample extramural activities to practice speaking English. They needed to be “forced” to venture to speak English when outside classroom. In conclusion, there is a discrepancy (lacks) between the ideal proficiency that they perceived and the current level of speaking skills. They need to be provided with learning policies to provide them with chances events or venues to practice speaking English. Extramural speaking activities need to be explored and then written into a school policy so that students will not only speak English when in class but also when outside classes. Participatory-yet-mandatory extramural English activities need to be promoted.
