This study aims to find out the implementation of bilingual-based instruction in teaching English. This study was conducted at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sungguminasa. The method used in this research was qualitative with a case study approach. The instruments of this research were observation sheets, interview guidelines, recorder, and documentation. The teacher used two languages with translation strategy and alternated his languages from L1 (first language) to L2 (second language) or vice versa to make the learning process run effectively. The factors that cause the teacher to use bilingual-based instruction in learning English are: the teacher said that bilingual-based instruction is important to make the learning process run effectively, the way the students understand the learning material is different, and using bilingual-based instruction helps students easy to understand what is explained by the teacher. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of implementing collaborative writing strategies on student achievement in writing with the main objective: to determine whether there is a significant effect of collaborative writing strategies on student achievement in writing recount texts. This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental research design. The population of this research is grade ten of one of the senior high school students. Two classes were taken as samples of this study. The experimental group was taught using the Collaborative Writing strategy, while the controlled group was taught using the conventional method. The data collection instrument was a written test. The results showed that the use of Collaborative Writing strategies increased students' achievement in writing recount texts. Evidenced by a significant 2-tailed level for the t-test, namely 0.005 <0.05, which means H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. This means that there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Writing strategies on student achievement in writing recount texts. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers apply a collaborative writing strategy to students' learning achievement in writing. Based on the observation of teaching experience it is said that students are more enthusiastic to participate in learning. They have the motivation to write. They are also able to create positive relationships when they work collaboratively in groups. That's because they have many pairs of eyes for writing correction. In addition, students are allowed to give and received direct feedback on the language used in their writing. Thus, the teaching-learning process becomes more interesting and students enjoy a better writing process in recount texts.

Abstract

This study explores the complex phenomena of academic culture shock that Indonesian students experience while they study in Pakistan. The main objective is to obtain a thorough grasp of the various aspects, contributing factors, and coping mechanisms related to academic culture shock in this particular group of students. In order to do this, the study makes use of well-established theoretical frameworks, such as Collen Ward's ABCs of culture shock paradigm, Rajasekar's model explaining the factors influencing culture shock, and Brislin's theory of cultural adjustment training. The study carefully examines the affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects of academic culture shock that Indonesian students encounter through the use of qualitative research approaches. Important contributing factors include language obstacles, cultural differences in ethnicity, following new norms and traditions, and adjusting to seasonal changes. Moreover, the study emphasizes the critical role that initiation plays in the process of adaptation, whereby Indonesian students utilize comprehension, memorization, and self-directed task completion as essential coping strategies to negotiate and eventually overcome academic culture shock in the Pakistani educational setting.

The subjects of the research are a class of students in a senior high school in Palopo, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data were collected through documentation, interview, and observation. Based on the results of this study, three general difficulties were found for students in writing descriptive text, including 1) difficult to follow the generic structure of descriptive text; 2) difficult to use the linguistic features, and 3) misuse of writing mechanics. These difficulties are caused by several factors, including 1) the students are less in writing practice, 2) lack of writing ideas, 3) lack of vocabulary mastery, 4) lack of motivation in learning English. It is suggested that writing descriptive text should be learned and taught intensively.

Abstract

Mastery of the English language in the era of globalization has become an essential skill required in various aspects of life. Challenges in the teaching and learning of English, such as limited learning resources and unengaging teaching methods, call for innovative solutions to enhance learning effectiveness. This research explores the use of Quizizz, a game-based learning platform, as an interactive learning medium in teaching English to students at SMP IT Al-Akhyar Makassar. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of implementing Quizizz in improving students' understanding of English by using the K-Means algorithm for analyzing students' learning performance data. The research method involves collecting students' grades before and after the implementation of Quizizz in English learning. The data were analyzed using the K-Means algorithm to classify students into clusters based on their improvement in understanding. The evaluation of the clustering model was conducted by comparing the average within-cluster distance and the average between-cluster distance to assess the cohesiveness and differentiation among clusters. The results show a significant improvement in students' understanding of English after the implementation of Quizizz, indicated by the shift of student allocation into clusters with higher criteria, namely excellent. The evaluation of the clustering model shows that the clusters were formed effectively, with strong internal cohesion and clear differentiation between clusters. This supports the claim that Quizizz helps people learn English better.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the results of implementing web-based vocabulary for the first-year students of the English education department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. This research uses mixed methods or quantitative and qualitative designs. The instruments used in this research were a vocabulary test, observation checklist, and interview guide. The results of implementing vocabulary material for first-year English Language Education students at UIN Alauddin Makassar show that most students have not mastered the material. This is proven by the average test result of 57.9%. Meanwhile, the results of observations show that the web-based vocabulary material meets all indicators: acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, cost, feasibility, and sustainability, so it can be stated that first-year students of the English education department can use this web-based vocabulary material as supplementary media in learning. In addition, the results of interviews with students stated that this website can be used as a learning medium but must be complemented by other learning media. Therefore, this website can only be used as additional media in vocabulary learning, and it is still necessary to use other supporting media to achieve students’ learning needs.

Abstract

The existence of Psycholinguistics as a scientific discipline which has as an object of study the various psychological processes that underlie human communication, both in terms of producing language and perceiving it, has provided an alternative perspective in understanding various human communication disorders using English as the language of instruction. Communication disorders when producing language consist of phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic disorders while communication disorders when perceiving language consist of problems understanding the pronunciation of words from the interlocutor, problems understanding categories of expressions with their meaning, and problems understanding between verbal and non-verbal language. Factors that cause English communication disorders among students of the IAIN Bone Tadris English Study Program from a Psycholinguistic perspective are the mixing of students' first and second languages or foreign languages in the communication process, the students' limited ability and their confidence in communicating in English, as well as students' use of English is not yet intensive. Special strategies are needed to deal with these various communication disorders by exploiting the intersection between existing languages and growing students' ability and confidence in speaking English.
