Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of content-based and task-based instruction in a critical thinking setting on EFL learners’ writing. Accordingly, 60 female learners out of a total number of 90 intermediate learners studying at a language school in Tehran were selected after taking a piloted sample of the Preliminary English Test (PET) for homogenization prior to the study. Subsequently, they were put into two experimental groups: 30 learners in the content-based teaching group and 30 learners undergoing the task-based teaching treatment. Both experimental groups experienced the two teaching approaches in a critical thinking setting. A sample PET writing was administered as the post-test of the study after 16 sessions of treatment spanning nine weeks. A comparison of the mean scores of the two groups on this post-test through an independent samples t-test revealed that there was no significant difference between the two groups at the post-test. The probable reason for this result together with the pedagogical implications of this study and the suggestions for further research are elaborated extensively in the paper.

Abstract

There have been numerous studies analysing gender differences in language use. Most of them predominantly adopted static or hierarchical approach with obsolete understanding of gender differences. Concurrently with the high demand of socio-cultural aspects inclusion in language development studies, the research of gender in language use has also driven to the same direction with mixed talk and the use of dynamic approach as an alternative for more inclusive socio-cultural spectrum. Two student university classes were observed and their classroom conversations in mixed gender were meticulously selected for detailed analysis via N-VIVO. The study shows that social dimensions such as power, status, economy, and identity seem to be influential to Acehnese language users in mixed talks. Yet, some mixed talks are more likely to be affected by individual ontogenetic language development; the dominance of talk is relatively fading and mutual-respect is bold. Therefore, the advocacy for the dynamic approach to conducting further research in this domain is decisively important. It is also crucial for more thorough and deep analysis on the genetic language development of speakers such as their social backgrounds and study or learning experiences. This paper draws merely a minor part of a larger research project conducted in Aceh and is expected to be a trigger for future studies.

Abstract

This study focuses on the conceptualization of jihad in the text of Hikayat Prang Sabi by Teungku Chik Pante Kulu. This study provides a constructive discourse of thought for readers in understanding jihad. This study narrates jihad as literally meaning ‘striving’ or ‘struggling’ in Arabic, such as in wars, and it also examines the conceptualization of jihad in Acehnese literary texts. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative. The data were analyzed through a literary hermeneutic approach so that the interpretation of the Hikayat Prang Sabi text can be considered a universal truth in the lives of the Acehnese and Muslim communities in the world regarding the concept of jihad. The results of the analysis show that the concept of jihad in the Hikayat Prang Sabi is divided into three: (1) jihad for religious reasons, (2) jihad to defend the homeland, and (3) jihad for peace. These three concepts form the conceptualization of jihad based on the relationship between humans and God, the relationship between humans and humans, and the relationship between humans and the universe. This confirms the linguistic concept of jihad in the perspective of Muslims, especially the people of Aceh, that jihad is not only about war and suicide but also an inspiration to call for truth and peace.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring legitimation strategies used by two members of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (or Partai Solidaritas Indonesia, abbreviated as PSI) in justifying their party leader’s controversial statement on the abandonment of Sharia Law. To do so, it employed critical discourse analysis (CDA) with Leeuwen’s legitimation strategies (2007, 2008) as its analytical tool. The data were obtained from two separate interviews with PSI members aired on two different Indonesian TV channels. The interviews were transcribed and translated. From this process, a 1.170-word corpus, from which the data were derived, was generated. The findings showed that moral evaluation is the most dominant legitimation strategy, followed by rationalization and authorization. In moral evaluation, abstraction occurs most often, followed by evaluation and analogy. In rationalization, theoretical rationalization is used more often than instrumental rationalization. Finally, in authorization, PSI utilized impersonal authority to reject the Sharia Law by referring to academic studies and legal documents which assess the law as being negative. Meanwhile, expert authority was used to build legitimation by reference to experts who support the negative effects of the law. This study implies the power of language to legitimize a controversial activity by using different linguistics strategies.

Abstract

Prolonged armed conflicts between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement/Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM) happened from 1976 to 2005. The three-decade-vertical political conflicts have received worldwide attention in research, except its humorous sides. This study attempted to capture the types and styles of humor within the memories of Aceh society. To do so, this qualitative study used interviews and document analysis to interview 20 Acehnese people from five districts in Aceh province who experienced the vertical wars in Aceh and analyze written resources. The research found that there are many types and styles of humor that happened unintentionally as the result of the speakers’ mistranslating and miscode-mixing from Acehnese language to Indonesian language during unexpected interactions. Most of the humor occurring during the wars in Aceh fall into the incongruity theory, the verbal pun style, and the self-enhancing style. The findings of the study provide insights on the humorous side of the long wars through communicative interactions in Aceh that are useful to relieve tension when remembering the bitterness of the wars.

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the types of oral corrective feedback implemented in class and its effect on students’ willingness to communicate. As many as 35 senior high school students as well as the teacher were involved in the observation stage of this study and shared their perspectives about the relationship between teacher’s feedbacks on the students’ willingness to communicate through interview. The findings show that there are three types of oral corrective feedback given in the class, i.e. explicit correction, metalinguistic, and clarification request feedback. The students insist that the teacher’s oral corrective feedback does not make them reluctant to communicate to their peers or teacher in the class. Therefore, it can be concluded that teacher’s oral corrective feedback strategy does not disturb the interaction between the teacher and students in the class. It can be inferred that oral corrective feedback is necessary to be implemented in the class because it assists their second language learning.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the main factors causing Acehnese youth to be reluctant to use their Acehnese language within their groups and in daily life and also at finding out their attitudes towards the Acehnese language. The study adopted a case study approach using semi-structured interviews to obtain data. Ten (10) participants, who were members of the Students Union of Syiah Kuala University, the so-called PEMA Unsyiah, who were considered representative of all the students, took part in this study. The findings revealed that negative attitudes to their Acehnese language have mushroomed amongst Acehnese youth today. Acehnese youth are now accustomed to using Indonesian instead of Acehnese language in their everyday life due to several reasons, namely: Indonesian seems more modern (showing the person to be upper- class), they feel spoken Acehnese sounds ‘harsh’ and ‘weird’, Indonesian is predominant on campus now, Indonesian seems more prestigious and ‘cooler’, Indonesian can be used to neutralize the differences between different Acehnese dialects and languages, Indonesian is more convenient whilst Acehnese is more difficult, Acehnese is mainly used for making jokes, humour and puns, Indonesian is more reasonable and convenient to communicate with the opposite sex, if communication is already running in Indonesian, it is difficult to switch it to Acehnese, and finally, Indonesian is easier and more convenient to use to greet new friends.

Abstract

This study explored learners’ attitudes toward collaborative writing in pairs and small groups (fours and sixes) in a synchronous web-based environment. Sophomore pre-service teachers in one intact class in the Philippines (n=31) completed the same collaborative writing tasks using Google Docs. In three separate out-of-class sessions, they first worked in pairs, and then they were assigned to either groups of four or groups of six in the succeeding two sessions. After completing the tasks, they were asked to complete a post-task questionnaire. The learners had an overall positive attitude toward peer collaborative writing in a web-based synchronous environment as it helps them to develop the content better, find appropriate vocabulary, and improve the grammatical and mechanical accuracy of the texts they produced. Students highly appreciated working in pairs and groups of four. In pairs, they felt that it is easier to manage text-chat deliberation, resolve concerns, and attend to each other’s suggestions. In groups of four, they acknowledged the increase of peer resources for knowledge sharing and in ensuring the accuracy of their language use. Hence, the majority complained that a group of six is not that conducive in a real-time text-chat environment. When asked about their preference, most students would prefer to work in a similar task and environment in pairs. These findings on learners’ attitudes toward collaborative writing concur with the previous literature in face-to-face educational settings and open new insights on synchronous web-based collaborative writing via text-chat.

Abstract

Lack of motivation is the critical factor which affects university students’ learning process in Malaysia. Hence, this study is an attempt to investigate the types of motivation which Bachelor students used in learning English at one of the private universities in Malaysia. It was also analysed to determine the motivational level of the Bachelor students who learn English as a Second Language (ESL). This study used a quantitative method where the data was collected through the questionnaire adapted from Gardner’s (1972) Attitude, Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The questionnaire was distributed to 150 students and the data was analysed quantitatively. The findings showed that the majority of the Bachelor students were instrumentally motivated towards learning ESL. The result concerning the level of motivation showed that the students had a high level of instrumental motivation for learning English, compared to integrative, resultative, and intrinsic ones. Yet, it is also apparent that all four types of motivation are at a high motivational level. Based on the findings, a few suggestions were highlighted. First, the lecturers should always design a classroom environment that promotes students’ motivation towards learning ESL. Second, students should be given more opportunities to visit other English native countries under Global Learning Programmes (GLP). In that case, teachers or lecturers of ESL should promote all types of motivation in the classroom and guide students towards achieving goals.

Abstract

While a plethora of scholars have explored a growing body of research on women’s involvement in Jihad, there is still a paucity of studies addressing it using the hybridity of transitivity analysis and critical discourse analysis. The present study examined a testament left by an Indonesian woman involved in what she fallaciously called ‘Jihad’. To collect the data, the document analysis was adopted, meanwhile, Halliday and Matthiessen’s transitivity analysis (2004) and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (2003) were employed to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that the experience of the woman’s involvement in jihad was described by the dominant use of material process verbs (59.4%), followed by relational process (19%), mental process (13.5%), and verbal process (8.1%). The transitivity analysis showcases that the testament is not an average text with a religious message or instructions to deal with the left property; instead, it contains a message of the Salafi Jihadist ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which might put people’s lives in peril. The five core teachings of ISIS encapsulate the message of ideological teachings, including jihad (struggle in the context of religious war), takfiri (ex-communication), al-wala’ and al-barra’ (loyalty and disavowal for the sake of God), tauhid (unitary oneness of God), and tahkimiyah (the rule of God – both religiously and politically). The study findings implicate that we must raise awareness of all kinds of testaments left by the jihadi woman because these testaments may contain a global jihadist doctrine. With this in mind, we will not be easily persuaded to join a Salafi jihadist organization.
