Abstract

In the framework of conventional academic settings, there have been a large number of studies on the qualities of effective teachers; however, studies in the context of online environments seem to be scarcely documented in the literature. This explanatory sequential mixed-method study of 224 secondary school students, 21 of whom were interviewed in detail, examined their perspectives on effective teacher characteristics in online EFL instruction. This study differed from earlier investigations of the qualities of effective teachers in terms of its research site and inquiry emphasis. The results of the surveys and interviews provided students judgments of effective teacher traits in terms of roles, professional abilities, personal qualities, and pedagogical expertise. According to the results of the polls, the most significant criteria for effective online learning management were instructors classroom management roles and their professional skills. The interviews stressed the importance of teachers qualities in managing classrooms and their pedagogical knowledge. In an online EFL instruction, students needed their teachers to scaffold them and explain what they should do with the lesson and the procedures they should follow for activities and assignments. In addition, the interviews validated teachers capacity to establish a favorable rapport with the students to facilitate their meaningful learning. As this study identified teachers professional abilities in managing online learning as a requirement, an online-learning-based professional development program for teachers is highly recommended as the most plausible alternative for the post-pandemic reflection of this current study.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship between folklore and the character of the Leukonese community on Simeulue Island, Aceh Province. Employing an ethnographic and anthropolinguistic approach, the study utilized audio-video recordings of oral Leukonese folklore, including nandong, nanga-nanga, and buai. The performances of nandong (songs), nanga-nanga (sad stories), and buai (poetry) were analyzed using the anthropolinguistic approach to delineate their components (text, co-text, and context) as an integrated whole. The meaning of the folklore was dissected through domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, and semantic componential analysis. Domain analysis explored the semantic relationship between folklore and the Leukonese character, identifying attributes. Taxonomy analysis categorized these attributes, influencing the Leukonese character in performance. Semantic componential analysis served to confirm and annotate these attributes in the Leukonese peoples character. The studys findings demonstrate that the presence and perpetuation of Leukonese folklore significantly impact the character of its people. Nandong teaches (1) the transmission of values and norms, (2) cultural identity and continuity, and (3) social cohesion. Meanwhile, buai fosters (1) cultural preservation and celebration, (2) community cohesion and participation, and (3) integration of Malay tradition. Finally, nanga-nanga instills (1) emotional expression and coping, (2) the reflection of social realities, and (3) empowerment and voice. Consequently, language serves as a means to express ideas, thoughts, and experiences, manifested in various oral traditions passed down through generations. These traditions often mirror the characteristic patterns of a community.

Abstract

Motivation to read, the driving force to achieve ones reading goals, plays a significant role in language learning as it relates to reading engagement and achievement. Its presence is prominently necessary for a longer learning period. This article explores the features of nine pre-service students motivational currents and how their motivation changes throughout the task performance in Extensive Reading Programs (henceforth ERPs). Data were collected from diaries, and a retrodictive qualitative model was applied to recount the experiences of the student participants motivational currents following Drnyeis Directed Motivational Currents (DMC). Themes of diaries and interviews were generated following the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The findings show that the features of DMC are salient and functioning throughout the students learning experiences and facilitate the construction of their future identity as readers. Four patterns of motivational currents during the students learning were a steady wave, slight wave, moderate wave, and great wave patterns. The variability and stability of task performance motivation indicate that students motivational trajectories are unique, conditional, and context-bound. Identifications of the sources of motivators and demotivators provide hints for designing more engaging classroom activities, enriching the task features, and sustaining students motivation. This study concludes with possible directions for future motivation research.

Abstract

In Indonesia, covering songs with an Islamic theme has become a trend that is gaining more and more popularity. Several content creators have recently covered non-religious songs by changing the lyrics to ones loaded with Islamic teachings. As the cover songs are uploaded on YouTube, inevitably, there are versions of cover music videos in which some elements of the original music videos are euphemized to fulfill the purpose of religious wisdom. This study not only attempts to examine the visual elements euphemized in the cover music videos but also the visual euphemization strategies employed by the content creators. The data were gathered from YouTube in the form of twelve original music videos and their covers. Furthermore, a localization approach, the theory of euphemism, and para-adaptation were employed to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that four visual elements were euphemized in these cover songs: the properties, costumes, locations, and interactions among the singers or models. Delving deeper into this, the researchers proposed four visual euphemization strategies, including peripheralization (euphemization of the properties), vestimentarization (euphemization of the costumes), locationalization (euphemization of the locations), and interactionalization (euphemization of the interactions). These findings interestingly highlight that there is a common visual euphemization strategy used by content creators when covering music videos of non-religious songs into Islamic songs. Thus, the findings suggest that content creators may apply the four proposed strategies to create acceptable cover music videos to spread Islamic teachings.

Abstract

As digital technologies continue to permeate all aspects of contemporary society, the educational domain, particularly foreign language teaching, has also significantly transformed. During the 1990s, the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) into language teaching was initially met with enthusiasm among educators. However, what originally started as integrating multimedia resources into the learning environment soon escalated into a comprehensive transformation, which included innovations such as online platforms and adaptive learning systems that became part of language teaching curricula. This evolution led to fundamental changes in pedagogical approaches, teacher-student communication, and the overall educational setting within classrooms. As digital technologies evolved and diversified, so did the attitudes of language teachers, whose initial enthusiastic welcome transformed into growing doubt. This research aimed to investigate how digital technologies within the domain of language instruction are utilized and to explore the prevailing attitudes regarding their implementation. The study spanned two decades: the periods from 1990 to 2000 and from 2013 to 2023. Semantic literature analysis of 300 scientific publications was used to determine the educators reactions toward the application of ICT, which were categorized into positive, negative, mixed, and research-oriented attitudes. Additionally, a survey of 88 foreign language teachers was conducted to collect empirical data. A clear trend is observed in how language educators perceive and apply technologies in their classrooms. The authors concluded that these tools remain popular among educators despite increasing skepticism and caution regarding ICT efficacy.

Abstract

Technological advancements in the 4.0 era have made it possible for English language learners to access online resources at any moment in any place, including websites that provide learners with a wider variety of auditory inputs. Despite this, some students may find it difficult to navigate independently owing to the vast quantity of websites. This research aims to discover the websites utilized by English major students at a state university in West Sumatra in independent listening practices, as well as their underlying motivations for selecting those websites. Using a qualitative case study, the data were collected using a questionnaire that was administered to 105 fifth-semester university students, and presented according to the frequency. The findings recorded a total of 34 websites used by students for practicing listening to enhance proficiency in deciphering unfamiliar words, acquiring knowledge of English sounds, and comprehending spoken utterances. The students further confirmed that materials found through the sources provided them with a sense of ease in learning. These initiatives demonstrated the students proficiency in utilizing technology for additional learning inputs. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these learning modes still needs to be confirmed as the duration spent by learners may not be sufficient. Further research is recommended to analyze the websites selected by students to provide more tangible evidence regarding the suitability of the material for learning.

Abstract

This paper utilizes the Natural Semantic Metalanguage Approach (NSM) to explore the meanings of animal-related taboo names among the Acehnese in Indonesia. Through qualitative interviews with 12 respondents from Langsa City and Peureulak District in East Aceh, the NSM approach reveals two categories of animal taboos. The first, the taboo of swearing, involves offensive language equating individuals with animals like bui (pig), ase (dog), paee (gecko), muruwa (monitor lizard), and lemo (cow). The second, the taboo of fear, rooted in cultural beliefs, deems certain animals sacred and prohibits mentioning their names in natural settings, including rimueng (tiger), gajah (elephant), buya (crocodile), badeuk (rhinoceros), uleue (snake), and tikh (rat). Acehnese use alternative names to show respect, reflecting a belief that respecting nature facilitates harmonious living. The semantic primitive meaning of animals taboo for swearing involves a substantive component, a substantive relational of a kind, and bad as an evaluator. Equating humans with these animals is prohibited when their names are used in the context of insulting others. The taboo of fear is attributed to the animals perceived holiness and sacredness, with the semantic primitive involving something kind and bad. Acehnese believe these animals possess mystical powers and can hear their names when being called, hence suggesting the use of alternative names for these animals is preferable.

Abstract

Teaching materials are significant items that are unique and specific. Therefore, the selections should be relevant to students proficiency. This research aimed (1) to disclose lexical density, readability, nominalizations, and modifiers in pedagogical texts as teaching materials, (2) to reveal the linguistic features functional roles on text for pedagogical demand, and (3) to attempt to suggest consideration for simplification on authentic text. This research employed qualitative content analysis. The data sources were 18 pedagogical texts from senior high school textbooks by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. Human instruments and a text analyser for the automatic computation were utilized for the analysis under Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) pilots. This research disclosed the appropriate text lexical density for senior high school students is a fairly difficult construction. Then, nominalizations within the texts are unpreventable and process nominalization is frequently used. The nominalization and the modifiers affect sentence complexities; the nominalizations function to condense information, collocate words, create cohesiveness, interfere with conciseness, and use as trans-categorization while modifiers are to add explicitness to nouns. The simplification considerations are by utilizing lexical density and readability algorithm, de-nominalization, measuring modifiers, and splitting substance of modifiers to increase text accessibility.

Abstract

University teaching staff in Croatia are expected to implement English Medium of Instruction (EMI) as an integral part of their teaching inventory, while students are encouraged to enrol in academic subjects taught in English. This study aimed: 1) to examine and analyse students and teachers attitudes towards the importance of using EMI, i.e., the importance of using English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for sport as a profession as an integral part of subjects delivered in English; 2) to provide feedback to all the ESP teachers regarding the necessity of creating adequate teaching materials for teaching ESP for sport as a profession. The study sample consisted of 91 students and 32 teachers randomly selected from one of the public universities in Croatia. Data was collected using an adapted questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed since the t-test for dependent samples showed no significant differences between the first and second measurements (p 0.05), and the correlation was moderate to high (r ranged between 0.71 and 0.89; p 0.05). The results show that the usage of ESP enhances the teaching and learning process and enriches their general knowledge of English. Also, the findings point towards the necessity of accumulating the number of teaching hours for subjects that implement EPS for sport as a profession and their availability at the academic level.

Abstract

Effective English communication across different languages and cultures has become increasingly important in a globalised world. To gain a deeper understanding of the segmental features of Thai speakers of English, this study aims to investigate the production of English monophthongs and diphthongs by Thai speakers and examine how intelligible their pronunciations are to others. Data were collected through two tasks: a production task and a listening task. For the production task, three Thai female speakers were chosen as the participants. They were recorded reading a passage consisting of all targeted vowels, and a total of 180 English tokens were analysed. For the listening task, thirty Malaysian listeners were asked to evaluate the speech intelligibility of the English sounds produced by the three speakers. The duration and formant frequencies of English vowels produced were measured to investigate the characteristics of the monophthongs and diphthongs. The findings show that there were significant differences in the durations between long and short vowels of the monophthongs, but there were no significant differences in the vowel quality produced. The ROC (rate of change) of formant frequencies (F1 and F2) indicates that there was no formant movement for the diphthongs /e/, //, and /e/. The three diphthongs showed similar characteristics as other ASEAN Englishes that are monophthongal as /e:/, /o:/, and /:/, respectively. These findings confirm that speakers L1 influences English vowel production. Although there were vowel variations in the characteristics of the vowels produced by the speakers, the intelligibility scores were high.
