Abstract

This research aimed to find the types of idioms in the song lyrics of the Cannot Be, Whatsoever album by Novo Amor. This research used descriptive research with synchronic linguistics analysis. The researcher analyzed 9 (nine) songs. They are Opaline, I Feel Better, Decimal, No Plans, Birdcage, Keep Me, Halloween, If Were Being Honest, and Guest Book. The researcher analyzed the idiomatic expression types using the theory of Makkai (1994), which classifies the idioms based on their structure. Besides that, the researcher used idiom similarity in the idiom dictionary to find the meaning of the idioms. From the analysis, the researcher found 63 idiomatic expressions in the song lyrics of the songs in the Cannot Be, Whatsoever album by Novo Amor. The idiom types according to Makkais theory that was found in this album were 10 Phrasal Verb Idioms, 44 Tournure Idioms, 1 Irreversible Binomial Idioms, and 8 Phrasal Compound Idioms. It can be said that the dominant type of Makkais theory in this albums songs is the Tournure Idiom, and the least type is the Irreversible Binomial Idiom.

Abstract

In order to perform an inferential analysis using a relevance theory, this study pragmatically analyzes the poetry "From the House of Yemanjá" by Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde’s poetry entitled ‘From the House of Yemanjá’ is the subject of this study. An inferential analysis based on the relevance theory is employed in this study together with a qualitative methodology. The researcher served as the main analytical tool. The analysis's findings demonstrated how Audre Lorde's poetry From the House of Yemanjá used contextual inferences and poetic effects to highlight the physical settings, addressee, and characters. The researcher comes to the conclusion that Lorde created beautiful language by using contextual elements to symbolize the poetry.

Abstract

Family is an ancient literary subject. From primitive myths and legends to works of contemporary magical realism, generations of literati and writers have tirelessly told the family’s story to the world. This research examines the theme of family in the Naguib Mahfouz and Ba Jin trilogy from the perspective of cross-cultural studies and aims to point out the multiple connections between both trilogies by means of illustrating their similarity and differences. This research reveals that Naguib Mahfouz and Ba Jin describe family life from an almost similar perspective. The similarities are wrapped in the form of the roles in the family, the patriarchal hierarchy, the dictatorship over children, the culture metaphors in patriarchal narration, the unhappy women, and the fact that each of the two writers wrote the novel to talk about his real world. On the contrary, the differences lie in the idealism in family, the use of family background, the complexity of China, the simplicity of Arab, and the different political circumstances.

Abstract

In the twentieth century, when the study of cultural anthropology suggested that linguistic barriers were insuperable and that language was entirely the product of culture, the translation must be as literal as possible. This resulted in confusion among translators when translating a text, not until they were illuminated by Peter Newmark’s "Approaches to Translation". Newmark's idea has been widely used in translator training courses and combines a wealth of practical examples of linguistic theories of meaning with practical applications for translation. However, in this twenty-first century where translation becomes more complex (e.g. political agenda), Newmark’s theory seems to have a deficiency as it does not pay attention to the role of the translators. Therefore, the translation theory needs to be broadened to take into account the value-driven of the human yardstick framework. The present paper aims to provide a critical evaluation of Newmark's theory of translation and to suggest a new theory. It is concluded that Newmark's theory lacks some important criteria to really reach appropriate translation in some cases. Finally, the “Appropriateness Theory” proposed by Woesler (2021, 2) comes to perfect the previous theories and to meet the demands of this twenty-first century translation.

Abstract

Everyone has an Instagram account in this digital age. Lecturers use Instagram as a medium for developing English language teaching. The lecturer asked the students to write their ideas in English on Instagram caption. This study presents an analysis of English skills in teaching English online through the use of Instagram in the New Normal era of Covid-19. The data will be analyzed using quantitative and qualitative research standards. The first data of this quantitative study was taken from the Survey through a questionnaire. Survey is a procedure in quantitative research that involves the use of a questionnaire to explore population characteristics, attitudes, behaviors, and opinions. Then, the researcher used qualitative research to serve the results of the interview data. The results of this study are first, that English skills are dominant in teaching English online. Second, students' perceptions of English language skills that are difficult to develop in online teaching through the use of Instagram in the new normal era of covid-19. Third, Instagram is a media solution for teaching English online for students.

Abstract

Teaching English to young learners in Indonesia remains a controversial topic among teachers and parents. Parents are particularly concerned about their children's progress in communication and interaction skills. Many English courses and programs are rapidly attracting children and their families from middle-class to upper-class backgrounds. However, there are concerns that teaching English in Indonesia emphasizes rote learning of rules and sentence development. Additionally, some teachers lack the necessary educational experience to effectively teach young learners. To address these concerns, a study was conducted using qualitative methods to explore perceptions and strategies in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). The research subjects included teachers and parents. The study identified two critical factors that need attention in teaching English to young learners. The first factor is perception. Both teachers and parents believe that starting English education at a young age leads to greater knowledge acquisition. Teacher perception received the highest score, with 74 out of 80, while parents' perception scored 57 out of 70. The second factor is strategy. Teachers are encouraged to implement appropriate strategies based on the specific conditions and situations of the school. Video-based instruction was found to be the most suitable method for student engagement and character development. Overall, this study highlights the importance of addressing perceptions and employing effective strategies when teaching English to young learners in Indonesia. By considering these factors, educators can create a more productive and engaging learning environment for children.

Abstract

The increasingly global use of digital music platforms is of course very helpful for artists to introduce their work to all fans from various walks of life and languages around the world. one of which was done by an artist named Troye Sivan, who included hard subtitles in the Indonesian language in the video clip for the song "Easy". This study raises the title "Analysis of the Translation of the Lyrics of the Song "Easy" from English to Indonesian in the Video Clip by Troye Sivan". This study aims to find out what techniques are used in the process of translating the lyrics of the song "Easy" by Troye Sivan. The research method used is descriptive qualitative and uses the translation theory of Molina and Albir. The results of this study are that there are 5 translation techniques used, namely: Literal Translation with 20 data, Adaptation with 7 data, Compensation with 1 data, Transposition with 2 data.

Abstract

This study aims to diagnose culture-specific items (CSIs) in the English translation of the Holy Quran and the strategies used to translate the CSIs. Translating CSIs can be demanding because such items have specific meanings in the culture and language in which they exist but not necessarily in others. Considering this fact, the present study investigates the strategies used in the translation of culture-specific items in the English translation of the Holy Quran. To achieve these goals, the descriptive approach is applied to the analysis of the translation of specific items of culture. The descriptive analysis is also used to investigate the translation strategies used therein. The findings of this study indicate that the use of the cultural equivalent strategy was the most frequently applied strategy. The second most frequently applied translation strategies were the descriptive equivalent and thorough translation, followed by transference, functional equivalent, componential analysis, synonymy, modulation, and notes. The results show that the translation strategies are helpful (especially the target-oriented ones) in different ways to convey the meaning of the text from Arabic into English.

Abstract

With the acceleration of economic globalization, there is a growing demand for translation services. In recent years, the quality of machine translation has been significantly improved. Compared with human translation, machine translation has the advantages of low cost and high speed. However, there is still little discussion on this scholarship, as this neural machine translation brings both convenience and pressure to translators. To address this issue, this paper will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of neural machine translation and discuss whether neural machine translation is a chance or a challenge for human translators.

Abstract

With the rapid growth of the economy, people's pursuit of quality life is gradually increasing. Travelling abroad has become a hot topic nowadays. The rapid development of overseas travel has increased the demand for tourism translation and more stringent requirements for tourism translators. How to deal with the translation problems caused by the cultural differences between Chinese and English during the translation process is very important to improve the quality of tourism translation. The communicative translation strategy in Newmark's translation theory focuses on the effect that the translation brings to the target language readers, which is of certain guiding significance to the E-C translation of tourism texts. Therefore, this paper takes the Everglades National Park, Florida (Excerpt) as an example to analyze the specific translation strategies and methods in applying Newmark's translation theory in tourism texts to provide references for other translators.
