Abstract

This study analyzes the meaning of longing (kerinduan) contained in the lyrics of the song "Pulanglah Uda" by Syam Tanjung and Yongky RM using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. The song, written in the Minangkabau language, represents the emotional expression of Minangkabau society closely associated with the tradition of merantau (migration). This research employed a qualitative approach with textual analysis method based on Saussure's semiotics, examining the relationship between signifier and signified through syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis. To ensure data validity, triangulation of sources, theories, and methods was applied. The results show that the meaning of longing in this song is not singular but constructed through a system of linguistic signs operating within the Minangkabau language and culture. The study found that longing in the song is articulated through five main dimensions: temporal distance and absence, emotional suffering, anticipation and hope, memory and nostalgia, and inner anxiety. The theoretical contribution of this study lies in demonstrating how Saussure's structural semiotics can be applied concretely to analyze regional song texts as a system of cultural communication. The song "Pulanglah Uda" is not merely an entertainment work, but a cultural communication system that deeply constructs the meaning of longing and reflects the identity values of Minangkabau society, particularly in the context of the merantau tradition. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the framing of news coverage regarding the Operation Catch-Hand (OTT) case involving the Regent of Rejang Lebong by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Rakyat Bengkulu Online. This research employs Robert N. Entman’s framing theory, which consists of four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The method used is a qualitative approach, with data collected through news documentation and in-depth interviews with media practitioners. The findings reveal that the framing of news coverage develops progressively following the dynamics of information, beginning with speculative reporting, shifting to more factual coverage after official confirmation, and ultimately emphasizing the designation of suspects and the disclosure of bribery practices in project procurement. These findings indicate that the media not only disseminate information but also actively construct reality by highlighting certain aspects in accordance with the evolution of information sources. Theoretically, this study demonstrates that framing in local media tends to be dynamic and aligned with the news production process, thereby contributing to the development of mass communication studies, particularly in understanding the construction of reality in corruption-related news coverage at the local level. Abstract

This study aims to analyze green marketing communication in the implementation of the paid plastic bag policy at Indomaret. It employs green marketing concepts and framing theory to examine how environmental messages are constructed and delivered to consumers. A qualitative content analysis method was applied to visual communication, product-based communication, and verbal communication at the point of sale. Data were collected from pamphlets, alternative products, and cashier–consumer interactions. The findings reveal that green marketing communication is fragmented rather than integrated. Visual communication symbolically frames environmental issues, product communication combines sustainability values with marketing strategies, while verbal communication is dominated by regulatory and economic framing. This fragmentation creates a gap between symbolic representation and operational practice, resulting in a partial understanding of environmental messages among consumers. These findings highlight the importance of consistency across communication channels to ensure a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability messages. Abstract

The transformation of media driven by the development of digital technology has changed the way people obtain information. YouTube, as a new medium, serves not only as a platform for entertainment but also as a primary source for meeting the public’s information needs, including on technology-related topics. This study aims to determine the influence of the GadgetIn YouTube channel’s content on the information needs of its subscribers. Using a quantitative approach, this study involved 100 active respondents from a total population of 13.4 million subscribers to the GadgetIn YouTube channel. Sampling was conducted using a non-probability method based on the Slovin formula. Data collection was conducted through the distribution of an online questionnaire designed based on YouTube channel content indicators according to Jacky Maulana (2021) and information needs according to Syaffril (in Perdana et al., 2012:5). The results of the validity and reliability tests showed that all instruments had valid and consistent values. Through simple linear regression analysis, the results showed that GadgetIn content has a positive influence on information needs, with a coefficient of determination of 70.9%. It was found that the type of information, visual appeal, frequency, and viewing duration collectively influence the search for knowledge related to the development of digital devices. This study concludes that GadgetIn’s content contributes to enhancing viewers’ technological knowledge. Therefore, the optimization of relevant and targeted content delivery needs to be continuously developed to address the specific needs of subscribers in navigating the flow of digital information. The results of this study are expected to serve as an academic and practical reference in the development of technology-based content media strategies. Abstract

This study examines the Spiral of Silence phenomenon in the context of social media as a reinterpretation of mass communication theory in the digital era. The Spiral of Silence theory, proposed by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, explains the tendency of individuals to choose silence when their opinions are perceived as different or in the minority, in order to avoid social isolation. In traditional mass communication, the media plays a dominant role in shaping majority opinion. However, the development of social media has created a participatory, interactive, and algorithm-based communication space, giving rise to new dynamics in the formation of public opinion. Social media not only provides a space for expression but also creates social pressure through comments, likes, shares, and the potential for cyberbullying. This situation contributes to individuals' continued fear of social isolation, even within the seemingly free digital space. This study uses qualitative methods with a literature review approach to analyze how the Spiral of Silence operates in the social media environment and how mass communication theory needs to be reinterpreted in a digital context. The results show that the Spiral of Silence does not disappear on social media but instead undergoes a transformation. Individuals tend to engage in self-censorship, use anonymous accounts, or choose silence when confronted with dominant opinions. These findings confirm that social media continues to function as a mass communication medium with ideological power in shaping public opinion and individual communication behavior. Abstract

This study aims to examine the trends in choosing a major for continuing studies at university among 12th-grade high school students in Bengkulu City. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques in this study were conducted through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique used an interactive analysis model consisting of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the choice of major for continuing studies among high school students in Bengkulu City is the result of a complex communication process. Internal factors such as personal interests, talents, and motivation are the main basis for major selection. Most students choose majors that align with their interests, abilities, and future aspirations that have been formed since school. External factors, especially the role of parents and teachers, function as supporters who strengthen students' decisions. The support and guidance provided are helpful and not coercive, thus making students more confident in their chosen major. Social media also plays a role as a source of cognitive information in understanding majors and the world of college. However, social media is not the main determinant, but rather serves as an additional reference in the decision-making process. Thus, the trend in student major selection is the result of the interaction between internal, external, and social media factors. Keywords: Major Selection, College, Trends
