This study aims to find out the effect of applying community language learning method on the students™ achievement in speaking. The population of the study was the first year student at Man 2 Model Medan. In this study the sample is 50 students where 25 students took as experimental group and 25 students rest was control group. The data of this study was collected by oral test . It was applied in pre test and post test, then the scores were analyzes by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that t-observed value is higher than t-table value ( 3>2.00 ) at the level os significant 0.05 with the degree of freedom 48. It means that there was a effect of applying community language learning method on the students™ achievement in speaking. Keywords: Community Language Learning, Students™ Achievement, Speaking

This study aims to : (1) to investigate the application of cognitive levels of bloom taxonomy in reading questions in the worksheet, (2) to investigate the dominant cognitive dimension of Revised Bloom Taxonomy in the worksheet and (3) to write sample reading questions in students™ worksheet. This research was focused on analysing the students™ worksheet which is published by Permata team. The data analysed through data analysis table to categorizing the questions based on theory of Bloom Taxonomy .The finding implies that the number of activities of remembering was the highest percentage in this worksheet, 87.8%.The frequency of remembering is 58 of 66questions. The questions that work on the cognitive level of analyzingrank second with percentage of 6.1%. The third frequency is understanding with 3 question or 4.6 % and the last frequency is creating with 1 question or 1.5 %.The distribution of each category of revised Bloom™s taxonomy within the reading questions is not balanced. Based on the result, the category of remembering that is considered as the lowest level has the highest portion, while the other categories that are categorized as higher level has the low portion. Referring to this findings, the writer tries to develop the reading question in students™ worksheet for grade eight based on Bloom taxonomy to be better by providing some questions that are suitable with low and high order thinking skill.

This study was aimed to find out the interpersonal meaning realization on teacher talk and to describe the underlying reason of its realization. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data were the talks of English teacher at SMA SwastaTeladan Medan. The data were analyzed based on interpersonal meaning analysis of Systemic Functional Grammar which introduced by M.A.K Halliday. The findings of this study showed that 226 of 248 clauses were identified as mood, 98 of 248 clauses expressed modality and 22 of 248 of clauses were identified as minor clause.Further, the distribution of mood types showed that there were three types of mood realized on teacher talk. They were declarative mood (58 %), interrogative mood (17 %), and imperative mood (16 %). Moreover, the distribution of modality showed that 27 of 98 clauses (27 %) were used modal adverb which expressed median value of probability, 16 % of clauses were identified as high obligation (have to, must), then followed by 13 % of clauses were identified as median obligation through the use modal finite of should and need to.

This study was about Speaking Classroom Interaction Based on Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) Model for Grade VIII at SMP Negeri 16 Medan. The aim of this study were to state clearly the objectives of the study in relation of the problem posed. The objective was to describe how the pattern of IRF in the speaking classroom interaction for students grade VIII at SMP Negeri 16 Medan. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected in two ways by observing by video recording and interviewing. The data was analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The results of this study were the following (1) The language used by the teacher and the students in the classroom interaction was not balance. They are seldom to use English. Both teacher and students used Bahasa for 57% and the rest 43% they use English. (2) The lowest pattern was the teacher™s feedback. It had 22% feedback given by the teacher to the students. The students™ response was the dominant pattern in the classroom interaction rather than initiation. The students™ response had 44%, while the teacher™s initiation had 34%. This pattern happened when the teacher asked students the examples of using ˜can™ and to do some exercises of using ˜can™ in sentences.

This was a conducted Research and development (R & D) study which concerned with the using of appropriate teaching and learning media. The objectives of this study were to find out the existing teaching media used in XI grade students of SMA N 11 Medan and to develop Audio-Visual media by using VideoPad for teaching writing Analytical Exposition Text. The data was gathered in the preliminary data by using interview and questionnaire on XI grade students and the English teacher. Then need analysis was done through questionnaire and interview as well. This research described the existing media available in the school and how it is used in English teaching and learning process that a development should be done. According to the result of the need analysis there were only 18% of the students considered that the teaching and learning process was helpful. It also showed information about studentsŸ choice of method and media to learning writing. By considering the result of the need analysis, an Audio-Visual media then developed as a teaching and learning aid of writing Analytical Exposition text. The product had later been assessed by two experts to find out the eligibility of the media. Through the expertsŸ assessment which was contained of 4 scoring criterias, it was known that the eligibility of the media was œVery Good based on the scoring criteria. ABSTRACT This study aims to: (1) find out the reading skill workbook used in tenth grade in SMA Swasta Budisatrya Medan, (2) determine the workbook needed by tenth grade students in reading skills, and (3) to develop valid workbooks for use in reading skills according to the needs of tenth grade students. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Borg and Gall, Gall (2003). The research subject was X IPA 1 students of SMA Swasta Budisatrya. The research object is an inquiry based learning workbook. The instrument used was student questionnaire. The data was collected using questionnaires validation sheets. The validator consists of material expert, english teacher practitioner and the one class of tenth grade students. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the workbook that used does not support inquiry based learning processes, (2) inquiry-based learning based workbooks are workbooks needed by students, and (3) the developed inquiry based learning workbooks have been valid with a percentage of 91.2% from expert material and 92.8% from the English teacher and this workbook is appropriate with students' needs for reading skills.Keywords: Inquiry Based Learning, Reading, Students™ Workbook

This study deals with the Error Analysis on English Department Students™ Thesis Backgrounds in State University of Medan. The objective of this research are: 1. To find the types of errors are frequently found in thesis background written by graduated students of English department at State University of Medan. 2. To find the source of the errors that found in the thesis background of graduated students of English Department. Related to the object of the research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted at Reading Room Faculty of Lamguages and Arts. The object of this research is 30 theses. The result of this research showed that there are 103 errors of Misformation that happened because the students write the sentences in present tense, while the thesis background study has to be written in past tense. The highest recapitulation showed that the most source of error is œintralingual transfer. Keywords: error analysis, thesis backgrounds

The aim of this study were to figure out the dominant category used by teacher and students and the types of verbal interaction used by teacher and students in learning English at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai. The methodology of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher took two classes (XI-IPA2 and XI-IPS2). The researcher used observational tally sheet, matrix, and audio recording as the instruments for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Flanders™ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS). The data analysis showed that the teacher more dominant in the classroom interaction than the students. The percentage of teacher talk in class XI-IPA2 was 74.03%, in class XI-IPS2 was 65.60%. The dominant category used by teacher in class XI-IPA2 was lecturing by 31.78%, in class XI-IPS2 was also lecturing by 24.73%. The percentage of student talk in class XI-IPA2 was 20.16%, in class XI-IPS2 was 26.88%. And the dominant category of student talk was student talk-response with 15.11% in class XI-IPA2 and 23.65% in class XI-IPS2. All the types of verbal interaction based on Flanders™ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS) occurred in the classroom during teaching and learning process at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai.Keywords: Verbal interaction, teacher talk, student talk, Flanders™ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS)

This study focused on the readability of reading texts in English textbooks for grade XII students in the academic year of 2018/2019 based on Dale and Chall formula. This study was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data were 5 reading texts which consist of report, news item and procedure texts selected from English for Senior High School Students XII. The average readability score report texts in textbook was 6.9, while news item and procedure text in were 7.45 and 6.15. The scores indicated that the report text, news item and procedure text in English for Senior High School Students XII textbook were too easy for the twelfth grade students since the textbooks™ level was for the seventh and eighth grade.

This Study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students ' recount text of the tenth grade at SMA Budisatrya Medan. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used in recount text (2) to investigate the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students ˜recount text. The instruments of collecting data were elicitation technique and interview. The data was analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The results of this study were the following. (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students™ recount text, they were Theme Reiteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig - zag / Linear Theme Pattem ( Zig - zag / LTP). (2) The reason to use the thematic progression by the students, they were: (a) the students were lack of knowledge about the use of the thematic progression, (b) they are also less interested in writing. (c) The students got resources from English teacher™s explanation and (d) the students got resources from reading recount text.Keywords: Theme , Rheme , Thematic Progression , Recount text .
