Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types of interpersonal function in Hamiton and focuses on Halliday and Matthiessen™s (2004) perspective of interpersonal function applied in Hamilton Lyrics. and how the interpersonal function realized in Hamilton Lyrics. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative methode. The source of the data were taken from collected by watching streaming platforms such as Disney+ Hotstar, one of which is dedicated to Disney films. The technique for analyzing the data is qualitative research. The results of this research showed the classifying of data from Hamilton Lyrics selected song lyrics, also analyzing the mood structure regarding the most and residue. It was found there were 171 clauses in the Hamilton Lyrics, with the mood types and residue, 57 clauses were from the first lyrics in Hamilton Lyrics entitled Alexandre Hamilton, 80 clauses from the second in Hamilton Lyrics entitled Satisfied, and 34 clauses are from Hamilton Lyrics entitled You™ll Be Back. The classification are : 136 clauses of Declarative Mood, 27 clauses of Imperative Mood, and 8 clauses of Interrogative Mood. The researcher concluded that the analyzed and classified the Hamilton Lyrics based on the order of subject and finite to find the mood types and modality in each clause. The interpersonal function analysis was described and provided the examples of how that sentence categorized into the specific mood types and residue.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show and the reason for the participants to violate the maxims. The method used by researchers in this study is qualitative research with data sourced from the Hotman Paris Show youtube account that uses #trending in the publishing process so that 17 videos are obtained. Data collection techniques using documentary techniques as data collection instruments. The analysis technique used is: 1) Identify the types of maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show 2) Reducing irrelevant data sources with maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation 3) Classifying the data to its types 4) Interpreting the expressions of the principles of cooperation and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occur in the conversations of the participants and 5) Drawing the conclusions based on the research problem of this study. The results of this research principle of cooperation on the maxim of quantity with the number of 65 utterances (64%), the maxim of quality with the number of 19 utterances (19%), the maxims of the relationship with the number of 8 utterances (8%) and manner with the number of 9 utterances (9 %). In the analysis of reasons, there were 83 errors made by participants which were divided into understatements of 20 data (24%), irony17 data (20%), overstatements 13 data (15%), extreme 10 data (12%), sarcasm 8 data (10%), ambiguous statements 7 data (8%), irrelevant statement 6 data (8%), and metaphors 3 data (4%).

Abstract

This current study aimed to examine the turn-taking strategies that are used by sellers and buyers at Horas traditional market, Pematangsiantar. This study wants to show the process of turn-taking between sellers and buyers when taking their turn. Especially on take the turn when sellers and buyers do bargaining process. It means that which can look at how the sellers and buyers manage and take to the first current or exchange of talking turn in interaction. The data will analyze using Sack Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974) theory which is divided into three kinds, Current Speaker Select the Next Speaker, Self Select, Current Speaker Continuous. The data is collected by doing a recording video about the interaction between sellers and buyers, Pematangsiantar. The researcher found 40 data to support this study. Based on the result, the dominant strategy used by sellers and buyers is Current Speaker Select the Next Speake (50%), the next dominant is Self Select (32,5%), the last strategy is Current Speaker Continuous (17,5). The reason to use the dominant types is that the situation that often occurs is one buyer and one seller, so it can be ascertained that when the buyer becomes the current speaker, the next speaker is the seller, and vice versa. This study also showed that the most buyer does interact with seller is female buyers. It makes that the process of bargaining here needs a long time, different for male buyers, they only make on the bargain

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind politeness strategy in request which represented in Traditional Market. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. From the findings, 11 requests from 7 speakers have been analyzed. And from those, 21 requests filtered through transcribing the event. Of all 21 requests, it was found that there were 2 politeness strategies used, they were Bald-On record 32 (32%), and Positive Politeness 11 (1,21%) and offRecord16 (5,6%). Later on, the positive politeness was the dominant type of politeness since the traditional market was a full of bargaining, the using of positive politenesswould be found in many ways. The instrument of this study was recording the eventand transcribing them into list. And from that list, the categorization would be easy to extract the data. Thus the writer found that positive politeness that used also similar to another local traditional market.

Abstract

This research discussed about taboo language in Batak Toba language at Pajak Sore Padang Bulan Medan which aimed to find out the types, the impacts of taboo language expression towards customers, and how Bataknese society perceptions towards their taboo language. This research was based on Mahmoud™s theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 25 conversations of male and female participants who become sellers and customers in Traditional Market. The findings showed that there were 25 data, 20 data for the types and the impacts, 5 data for Bataknese society perceptions. The dominant types from taboo words in Batak Toba language is Insult and Slurs with 7 expressions, second is scatology with 5 expressions, followed by epithets with 3 expressions, vulgarity with 1 expression, obscenity with 1 expression. Batak sellers is the dominant use taboo language because it was their habit when they were angry but sometimes it is also a part of their close relationship, it means that how close their relationship, so they can used the taboo language. In the analyzed of the impacts of taboo language towards customers, the dominant impacts were people got offended easily and sometimes they become the people who have the irrational thinking. There were 5 perceptions of Bataknese society perceptions about their taboo language and the dominant perception were sellers and customers could not receive taboo words because they still thought that the language could have a bad impact on children because they would replicate and pronounce the taboo language.

Abstract

This research dealt with ConversationalImplicature in Dialogue of Layar TerkembangNovel by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana based on Grice™sTheory and it was aimed to finding out the types ofconversational implicature, and to describe whythe certain type of conversational implicaturebecomes dominant. This research was conductedby using descriptive qualitative method. Thesource of the data was taken from LayarTerkembang novel by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana,Then the dialogue of the novel as the data for theresearch. The findings showed that there were twotypes of conversational implicature in theprocedures namely Generalized ConversationalImplicature belong to 33 utterances andParticularized Conversational Implicature belongto 36 utterances. So, the most dominant types ofconversational implicature between the maincharacters in the novel was particularizedconversational implicature because it morecontained ambiguity, implicit meaning, conveyedan additional meaning, and their response did notrelevant with every question and also it cannoteasily to understand what he/she was talkingabout

Abstract

This research discussed about Feminismin both selected novels PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color Purplewhich aimed at finding out the types offeminism, reason why can the figure ofwomen struggle of feminisms and the roleof women in both of the selected novels.This research was based on Tong™s theory.This research was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The datawere taken from both selected novelswhich have feminisms, they arePerempuan Berkalung Sorban and TheColor Purple Novel. Abstract

The study dealed with the maincharacter™s conflicts and defensemechanisms found in a novel œTentangKamu written by Tere Liye. The objectivesof this study were to find out the types ofconflict of the main character and thedefense mechanism that is reflected insolving the problem. The sources of thedata were taken from the novel œTentangKamu By Tere Liye. This was anobservation study because this studyfocused on the analysis of spoken languagein the novel. The collected data wereidentified, divided, and analyzed based onliterature and psychology perspectives ofIslam™s (2016) theory and defensemechanisms by Cramer (2006). Thefindings show that Sri Ningsih, as the maincharacter, faces the external conflict whichis described as person vs nature whereasthe internal conflicts is person vs himselfwhich describes the features of sadness,anger, betrayal, anxiety, love and regret asexperienced by the main character. Theconflict between person vs. herself(internal conflict) becomes the mostcommon conflict faced by the maincharacter then it was followed with thedefense mechanism of denial andidentification.

Abstract

The research discussed about conversation analysis of turn-taking technique in œEllen Show talk show. Everyone should be familiar with œEllen Show this is one of the best popular talk show in American. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the types of turn-taking techniques that used by the host of œEllen Show talk show by using Sacks (1974) in Garcia and Jacobs (2010) (2) to find out how the differences of turn-taking between male and female guests in œEllen Show talk show by using Pennebaker, J. W. (2007). The descriptive qualitative method is being used in this research. The data were derived from the dialogue script, which was transcribed from the video. The findings of the study revealed that: (1) there were three types of turn-taking current speaker select next, next speaker self-selection, current speaker continue. The highest frequency was current speaker select next. The host and guests in œEllen Show talk show used current speaker select next which appeared 21 times, next speaker self-selection was the second highest frequency which occurred 19 times, then the lowest frequency was current speaker continue produced by the host and guests which appeared 4 times in eight episodes. (2) In all eight episodes, women take more turns in talking seven times than males three times. The researcher recommends that future studies examine turn-taking from a variety of perspectives, such as how turn-taking is used in movies by gender or other factors. The researcher hopes that this study will be valuable to readers and future conversation analysis researchers.

Abstract

This study focuses on conflicts that were faced by Tanya Baskoro as the main character on the Critical Eleven movie, the aim of this study is to find out kinds of conflict that were faced by the main character of the movie, then to analyze the strategies used by the main character in dealing with the conflicts, and explaining the factors that lead the main character to use particular strategy in dealing with particular conflict. The study was conducted using qualitative design, where it started from identifying, classifying, tabulating, then analyzing the data, the data gotten from the statements and dialogues from the movie. Using theory from two experts it was found that the main character was faced with two types of conflicts, External and Internal Conflicts, the dominant kind of conflict occurred to the main character is Man-Against-Man conflict. The most used strategy of the main character to deal with the conflicts are Competing and Avoiding strategy.
