Abstract

Communication strategy plays a crucial role in preventing social problems, as it determines how messages are designed, delivered, and received by the target audience. Within a community context, an appropriate communication strategy can foster shared understanding, particularly among adolescents who are vulnerable to social conflict. This study aims to analyze the communication strategies employed by the Head of Neighborhood 1, Bahari, to foster adolescents’ social awareness of the dangers of gang fights in Martubung Village, Medan Labuhan District. A qualitative approach was utilized, employing observation and semi-structured interviews with the neighborhood head and adolescents. The findings indicate that the communication strategy involves clear objectives, identification of appropriate target audiences, persuasive messages, direct communication channels, and a sustained dialogical process. These strategies contribute to improved understanding and positive changes in adolescents’ attitudes toward social conflict. The study confirms that leadership communication strategies at the neighborhood level play an important role in preventing youth brawls and enhancing adolescents’ social awareness.

Abstract

This study discusses the dynamics of interfaith harmony in Aceh Tenggara Regency, which has diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. As a region characterized by cultural and religious pluralism, Aceh Tenggara faces challenges in maintaining harmony among adherents of different faiths. The aim of this research is to identify the challenges faced, as well as the fostering strategies implemented by the government and the community to enhance interfaith harmony. The methodology employed in this study is qualitative-descriptive with a field study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The findings indicate that interfaith harmony in Aceh Tenggara encounters several challenges, including differing religious interpretations, social-economic conflicts of interest, and a lack of cross-cultural understanding. To address these challenges, the government and religious leaders have implemented various fostering strategies such as interfaith dialogue forums, joint social activities, and multicultural education in schools. These findings provide insights into the importance of participatory approaches in fostering harmony, as well as the necessity for support from all elements of society to create a harmonious social climate in Aceh Tenggara.

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines how Khanduri Maulod, the Acehnese commemoration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, mediates the interaction between Islamic normativity and local cultural practice, and how that interaction is renegotiated under conditions of modernisation and digital mediatisation. Existing scholarship has largely documented the descriptive and normative dimensions of the tradition, yet it has rarely explained the mechanism through which religious meaning is converted into durable social capital, nor has it modelled the tradition as a stratified system. Adopting a qualitative design with a systematic library-based method, the study assembled a corpus of fifty-nine scholarly and journalistic sources published between 2016 and 2026, screened them against explicit inclusion criteria, and analysed them through thematic coding, constant comparison, and source triangulation. The analysis yields four interrelated findings. First, the normative legitimacy of the tradition rests on a bid’ah hasanah argument that reframes innovation as an instrument of religious propagation rather than a deviation from it. Second, the ritual architecture of meudikee, idang meulapeh, and meuramin functions as a moral economy that redistributes surplus toward orphans and the poor. Third, the tradition operates as a reservoir of bonding and bridging social capital that sustains inter-village solidarity across a three-month ritual calendar. Fourth, its contemporary continuity is produced not by cultural inertia but by the deliberate agency of religious scholars, customary leaders, and a digitally literate younger generation. The study contributes a Before–After reconstruction model and a four-level analytical framework normative, ritual, social, and structural-digital that together explain religious resilience as an outcome of reciprocal internalisation and expression rather than of static preservation. These findings offer a transferable analytical instrument for studying vernacular Islam elsewhere in the Muslim world.

Abstract

Abstract:  This study examines the influence of liberal thought on the development of Islamic religious, social, and political discourse, focusing on how liberal ideas have shaped reform movements within the Muslim world, particularly Indonesia. Employing a qualitative library-research design, the study synthesizes primary and secondary literature books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and mainstream media reports concerning the historical trajectory of liberalism in both Western and Islamic contexts. The analysis traces liberal currents from the classical Islamic intellectual efflorescence of the Abbasid translation movement through to the emergence of the Liberal Islam Network (Jaringan Islam Liberal) in early twenty-first-century Indonesia. Findings indicate that liberalism has functioned less as an imported ideology than as a catalytic framework that intersects with indigenous reformist impulses, producing contextual reinterpretation of sacred texts, expanded discourse on gender justice, and a distinctive Indonesian model of religious moderation (moderasi beragama) that mediates between rigid conservatism and unrestrained secular liberalism. The study contributes a novel Before–After conceptual model and a Multi-Level Framework spanning individual, communal, socio-cultural, and politico-structural levels that maps how liberal ideas are absorbed, contested, and localized within Islamic thought. These findings offer both theoretical refinement for the sociology of religion and practical implications for religious-moderation policy in plural societies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of "eigenrichting," which refers to actions taken by individuals or groups outside of legal cedures to punish those perceived as criminals, is a significant concern in many societies. Normatively, eigenrichting is not justified and is against the law, as stipulated in Article 170 of the Indonesian Criminal Code concerning violence. This study aims to explore the factors leading to eigenrichting actions, particularly in cases of khalwat (close proximity between members of the opposite sex who are not married) in West Aceh. Employing a qualitative research methodology, specifically empirical legal research, this study examines both legal provisions and their application within the community. The results reveal that eigenrichting actions in West Aceh are primarily driven by five factors: (1) public distrust in law enforcement, (2) insufficient religious knowledge, (3) lack of legal understanding, (4) emotional responses, and (5) spontaneous community reactions. These factors contribute to varied public perceptions of eigenrichting actions against khalwat perpetrators. The study suggests that the community should be encouraged to report such incidents to authorities to prevent extrajudicial actions.

Abstract

Mass circumcision in Sooko, Mojokerto, East Java, is no longer limited to the fulfillment of religious obligations, but has evolved into a lively village carnival. This study examines how the transitional rites that were originally private were reconfigured into public celebrations and how these changes reflect the shifting relationship between religion, culture, and the life of rural communities in Java. The research uses a qualitative-interpretive design with an ethnographic case study. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with religious leaders, committees, village officials, circumcision participants, and parents, tracing of documents and photo archives, and digital ethnography of residents' social media content. The analysis uses an interactive model through data condensation, presentation, and verification, with credibility strengthened through triangulation, member checking, and audit trails. The results of the study show four main findings: first, carnival reproduces the three phases of the rite of transition through separation, liminality, and reintegration, with the procession extending the liminal phase as well as transforming the experience of pain into a collective honor; second, preparation of cross-neighborhood harmony to strengthen social capital through reciprocity and community networks; third, religious authority is negotiated through the boundary between festivity and piety; and fourth, mediatization expands the reach of tradition while presenting cost, noise, and spectacle pressures. The research resulted in a Before–After transformation model based on a multi-level framework that connects the dynamics of individuals, communities, and public-digital spaces.

Abstract

The utilization of banana corm for product diversification offers potential economic value, yet consumer preference remains a critical variable. This study aimed to determine the acceptability of Banana Corm Crackers in terms of three flavor variants (Lagundi, Pandan, and Turmeric), quality attributes (appearance, aroma, texture, and flavor), and packaging types (tub, transparent pastry box, and metallic stand-up pouch). Utilizing a descriptive-experimental research design, sensory evaluation was conducted with 30 Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTED) students majoring in Food and Service Management. Data were analyzed using Weighted Mean and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that the Pandan flavor was the most preferred variant with a mean rating of 7.99 ("Like Very Much"), while the metallic stand-up pouch was identified as the most favorable packaging. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in acceptability based on flavor and highly significant differences based on packaging; however, no significant differences were found regarding the general quality attributes across the variants. These findings imply that while the product quality is consistent, prioritizing the Pandan flavor and metallic packaging is crucial for maximizing market acceptability.

Abstract

Smoking is not merely an individual health issue but a form of social complexity deeply interwoven with a society's values, customs, and everyday interactions. This study examines the dangers and risks of smoking with a specific focus on their community and social dimensions. It addresses a gap in the literature by analysing in depth how smoking behaviour is socially constructed, how it is socialised within families, peer groups, and communities, and how it subsequently affects collective quality of life. Adopting a qualitative, descriptive–exploratory design underpinned by the Theory of Social Construction, the research explores perceptions, experiences, and social meanings through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation, with the resulting data interpreted by means of reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicate that smoking is routinely normalised and reproduced through observational learning and social pressure, generating substantial negative consequences that include inequitable second-hand exposure, economic strain on households, and disrupted patterns of social interaction. On this basis, the study argues for a decisive shift in tobacco-control strategy from individualistic interventions towards holistic, community-based approaches that deconstruct pro-smoking norms and empower communities to build environments that sustainably support health and a smoke-free way of life. The article's contribution is a systems-thinking model that renders these reinforcing and balancing dynamics explicit and locates the community as the principal point of leverage.

Abstract

This study evaluates the acceptability of rice husk (Oryza sativa) as an alternative material to sand in household cookstove production, focusing on usability, durability, and appearance. Employing a descriptive-experimental design, the research involved thirty selected households in Peñarrubia, Abra, distributing respondents evenly across three barangays. Data were collected using an adapted assessment sheet and analyzed through weighted mean and ANOVA at a 0.01 significance level. Results showed Treatment 1 had moderate acceptance (mean=3.22), Treatment 2 achieved high acceptance (mean=3.57), and Treatment 3 comprising 5 kg cement and 5.7 kg rice husk attained the highest acceptance (mean=4.73), indicating very high user approval. Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences among treatments. These findings highlight rice husk’s potential as an effective and socially acceptable sand substitute in cookstove manufacturing. Additionally, they underscore its role in promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable resource utilization, contributing to community well-being by offering a practical, eco-friendly cooking technology. This aligns with broader social goals of waste valorization and local economic empowerment through innovation.

Abstract

The challenges facing higher education in the modern era necessitate graduates who are not only academically and professionally excellent but also possess moral integrity and social awareness. This research aims to analyze the implementation of a Practitioner Lecture program, founded on religious-social values, within the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. Furthermore, it seeks to examine this program's contribution to enhancing the Key Performance Indicators (IKU) of UNISKA Banjarmasin and improving the quality of student engagement. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this study is expected to identify how the explicit integration of values such as trustworthiness (amanah), justice, empathy, and social responsibility into the curriculum and practical learning processes facilitated by practitioners acting as role models can transform the MBKM experience. Anticipated findings suggest that this strategy significantly boosts the university's IKU, particularly in terms of graduate relevance and community service, while simultaneously fostering greater student motivation, responsibility, and the quality of their participation in MBKM activities. The conclusion of this research will underscore that a Practitioner Lecture approach grounded in religious-social values is capable of producing graduates who are not only competent but also possess noble character, prepared to serve as positive agents of social change, thereby offering a strategic model for higher education institutions to integrate scientific knowledge and religious principles for the betterment of society
