English Education and Applied Linguistics Journal (EEAL Journal) is devoted to the applications of English education to problems of English language teaching and learning. Attention is paid to the learning and teaching of English languages as a second and foreign language in all countries. EEAL Journal requires articles to have a sound theoretical base and a visible practical application for a broad readership. Review articles are considered for publication if they deal with critical language learning and teaching issues with significant implications for practice and research. it is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to enhancing and disseminating scholarly work in the form of conceptual and research-based articles within the field of teaching English and English linguistics that have not been published or are under consideration elsewhere.

Abstract

In education, such as classroom teaching and learning, politeness is very important. Students communicate with the teacher during the teaching and learning process using various sayings that demonstrate politeness strategies. Considering politeness consists of methods to create appropriate politeness in communication between students and teachers. But when students use politeness strategies in giving feedback on the teacher's response, not all students can know a good speech. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the politeness strategies used by students and teachers for classroom interaction. There are four politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson's theory. There are bald on record, off record, positive politeness, and negative politeness. Researcher use qualitative descriptive methods to describe the results. The participants of this study were students and teachers in English classes. Researcher used two research instruments, namely interviews and observations. The Data will be analyzed by reading, analyzing, interpreting, and inferring. The results showed that the most dominant student strategy is positive politeness. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to students choosing the suitability of politeness strategies when classed.

Abstract

This research entitled comparing different reading strategies in improving students’ reading comprehension was conducted to find whether there is a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension based on the different strategy given to the students. Quantitative research was employed in doing the research by using one shot design framework. The treatment was conducted for 3 weeks in 5 different classes. The research was done in a private university in Garut. The population was 5 classes of third grade students enrolled in Reading III subjects. 45 students consisting 9 students from each class were taken as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. Statistical computation carried out in the research was ANOVA. From the analysis it was found out that the F ratio (4.48) value is higher than the critical value (2.61)  which led to the conclusion that there is significant different in student reading comprehension by using different reading strategies

Abstract

This study is aimed to (1), determine the role of teaching English. (2) prove that the use of lesson plan  give effect toward improvement of teacher’s quality in teaching, especially for teaching English. This study is a classroom action. The subject of this study is English teachers of SMA Negeri 5 Garut. Techniques of collecting datas are by using observation, interviews and documentations. The result of observation and interview with the English teachers in a public senior high school in Garut West Java that all English teachers have arranged and used  the lesson plan, and obtained data, from the six English teachers who do not understand about the role of lesson plan are only 2 persons, while 4 other English teachers have understood the role of lesson plan in teaching English. But, in improving and implementation, it is constrained by several factors as I explain in the discussion. But, in practice, English teachers will effort with existing abilities and collaborate with  other teachers to keep contributing  the best services to students in accordance with syllabus and English teaching plan and teach based on the lesson plan that accordance to condition and student’s characters in the present and the future.So, from this study, we can take  a conclusion that a lesson plan  gives big effect in improving English teachers qualities especially teachers in n a public senior high school in Garut and others in general.   Keywords: lesson plan, teacher’s quality, teaching English

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the types of moods found in students’ narrative texts. This study employed a qualitative research design in which using document analysis as a technique to obtain the data. The data used in this study were in the form of texts written by the students. There were six students categorized as high achiever and low achiever to become the sample of this study. The data were then analyzed using a data analysis sheet consisting of the categorizations of the data based on the mood types. The findings showed that the dominant mood type of the students’ narrative text was the declarative. The characteristic of declarative mood when the position of the subject was before the finite (Haliday & Matthiessen, 2004 )

Abstract

This research investigated the implementation of Building Knowledge of the Field (BKOF) in teaching narrative text. The purpose to conduct the research is to examine how does an English teacher implement BKOF in teaching narrative text. While this research uses qualitative applying descriptive study. In the research process, data collection was obtained from observation, document analysis, and interview. Thh result shows that there are four stages to implement Building Knowledge of the Field in teaching narrative text, include: First, the teacher gives stimulus to students, the stimulus given by the teacher is by giving examples of narrative texts and using questions; Second, the teacher guides students to mark vocabulary and sentence patterns which are linguistic elements of narrative text; Third, the teacher asks the students to reconstruct the narrative text which has vocabulary and sentence pattern errors; Fourth, the teacher evaluates the results of students' answers with the students.

Abstract

Special education seems to have to be considered one of the most stressful jobs in the education sector. Experts must convey highly specialized teaching methods that support a variety of different learning environments, alignment social and emotional development with firm academic achievement, and finally equip their pupils for a world that impose many real difficulties, and any method of instruction has obviously been a truly massive challenge. Thereby, the objective of this research was to reveal the challenges that English teachers confront while teaching Special Needs Students. The subjects of this research included an English teacher from such a special needs school who had significant experience teaching English. A semi-structured interview was employed to collect data. In accordance with the findings, the most daunting problem that teachers face when teaching English is listening skills. Further to that, the teacher is knowledgeable about teaching concepts, techniques, and problem-solving strategies.

Abstract

In the online reading classroom, the learning activity is different from offline reading learning. It engages the internet and technology to read, comprehend, and learn new information. However, those skills perceive some barriers in the process of learning in students during online reading learning. This qualitative study examined the descriptions of the barriers in reading online learning in a college from students’ perspectives. This study was conducted in one of the private universities in West Java, Indonesia. The participants of this study were 7 college students and one reading lecturer. This study applied the interview and observation as the data collection. The finding of this study has resulted 5 barriers of online reading learning with some description for each barrier. Those barriers are; epistemological barriers, infrastructure barriers, attitudinal barriers, technical barriers, and financial barriers.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the news item texts composed by students are based on a natural disaster news text, and how they respond to the use of natural disaster news text as a learning media to compose news item text. Based on these aims, this study uses a qualitative study by means of observation, document analysis, and questionnaire. Data collection was carried out on students twelfth grade from one of the Vocational High Schools in Garut, West Java. The results of the observation showed that under the direction of the teacher there are four steps that students took in composing news item text based on a natural disaster news text: 1) students understand the social function, linguistic elements, and structure of the news item text, 2) students open a web news link about natural disaster, 3) students write down the information they get from reading news on the web, 4) students compose a news item text based on the information. Based on the results of document analysis, it showed that the news item text composed by students fulfills the aspects of writing news item text. In addition, based on the results of the questionnaire, it showed that students gave positive responses to the use of authentic material in the form of natural disaster news texts in learning to compose news item texts. Therefore, as an effort for students to achieve the goals of learning English successfully, it is hoped that teachers can use authentic materials as learning media in the classroom.

Abstract

This Research is entitled “An Analysis of BTS’s Selected Song Lyrics: A Study of Denotative, Connotative and Myth Meaning”. The study is conducted to look at the meaning namely denotation and connotation as well as myth in these selected songs. The writer limits the research to only focus on 3 selected BTS songs. The writer used Roland Barthes’s theory. By using the method, the meaning contained in the song lyrics can be described in detail by analyzing the meaning of denotation and connotation in the lyrics and also to find the myths about what is already formed. The writer uses a descriptive qualitative method in order to answer the research problem. The writer found that there are 9 sign systems for BTS Epilogue: Young Forever lyrics that regarding career pressures or a person's mental health condition particularly for K-pop idols, 9 sign systems for BTS Fire lyrics that relate to social class, especially in Korea that usually called spoon theory and 12 sign systems for BTS ON lyrics that show how the shadow self- began to appear
