Abstract

This research identifies Indonesian language usage errors within student research proposal manuscripts at Universitas Alkhairaat Palu. The study is driven by the observation that students' academic writing skills often lack linguistic precision, affecting the clarity and scientific quality of their work. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data was collected via observation, documentation, reading, note-taking, and literature studies. Analysis utilized Krippendorff’s content analysis involving sampling, recording, and context units, validated through source and theory triangulation. The results uncovered 416 errors across six categories. Spelling errors were most frequent with 158 instances, followed by 85 punctuation errors and 72 affixation errors. Additionally, there were 65 capitalization errors, 35 cases of improper italics, and one non-standard reduplication. These findings highlight the critical need for improved linguistic competence in the university's academic environment.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perceptions of the Bugis Village community regarding the maintenance of the Tialo language and to examine the role of the government and relevant stakeholders in its preservation efforts. As one of the regional languages in Central Sulawesi, Tialo faces a decline in usage driven by the dominance of the Bahasa Indonesia, and low interest among the younger generation. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The sample consists of 250 respondents selected through a non-probability sampling technique. The findings indicate that while the community holds a positive perception regarding the importance of maintaining the Tialo language, its usage remains predominantly confined to the older generation. Meanwhile, the government's role in supporting language preservation is still considered low.

Abstract

This study specifically describes the forms of directive speech acts and the implementation of politeness strategies by the grade III C teacher at YPPK Kristus Raja Dok V Bawah Elementary School in mediating verbal bullying conflicts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach based on pragmatics, data in the form utterances were collected through the observational method and note-taking technique, and then analyzed using the pragmatic identity method. The results indicated that the teacher produced directive speech acts in the form of commands, prohibitions, and assertive-directive hybrid utterances to demand behavioral changes. These reprimands were implemented through a depersonalized Bald On-Record politeness strategy, as well as positive politeness and off-record strategies during personal mediation sessions. The selection of these linguistic strategies served to mitigate face-threatening acts toward the students. The orchestration of these pragmatic tactics created an effective perlocutionary force; it successfully dismantled the perpetrators' defensive attitudes, prompting reflection and mutual forgiveness.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of Instagram as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tool in EFL learning and examined gender differences in students’ learning experiences. This study employed a mixed-methods design with an explanatory sequential approach. The participants were 20 tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Kota Makassar, consisting of 10 male and 10 female students. Data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that Instagram supported students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities through captions, posts, comments, reels, videos, and speaking tasks. Female students obtained higher mean scores and showed greater participation and confidence than male students. This study concludes that Instagram can be an effective MALL tool when used through structured and inclusive EFL learning activities.

Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing Chinese dialect variation from a sociolinguistic perspective. Despite the establishment of Putonghua as the national standard language, various dialects such as Yue, Min, Wu, and Hakka continue to be used in daily communication, reflecting linguistic and cultural diversity within Chinese society. This research aims to identify and synthesize the main factors affecting dialect variation through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Relevant articles published between 2020 and 2025 were collected and analyzed from reputable academic sources. The findings reveal that Chinese dialect variation is shaped by four major factors: social factors, including urbanization, mobility, and language contact; geographical factors, such as regional isolation and topographical conditions; historical-political factors, including migration patterns and language policies; and language identity factors related to cultural attachment and community belonging. The study also indicates that the dominance of Mandarin has contributed to language shift among younger generations.
