Abstract

This paper aims at revealing that last will and testament in southern white culture does not limit its function as the legal document for transfering material and worldly property as it has recently been the focus of some researchers and the belief of the majority of modern southerners. Southern last will and testament is a symbolic construct. Individually it is the representation or the self expression of the intention of the makers. Southern last will and testament is the expression of individual freedom to give or not to give his property to others and to keep or to reveal their hidden secret to public in the intention of preserving their honor. It is also utilized to embed familial and religious values.

Abstract

Since modernity go to Indonesia along with the application of ethical politics of the Dutch colonial government, it can be said of conflict and rivalry between tradition and modernity in this country. A number of poems written in the early to late 20th century reflected the rivalry between tradition and modernity is. With the postcolonial approach is expected to be seen who the party is dominant and the marginalized in the rivalry between tradition and modernity in this country, as reflected in a number of poems.

Abstract

Syingir is a advice poem that uses the daily Javanese Language and sung individually or together. Syingir developed in pesantren [lslamic boarding school] or in Islamic region, in Central Java and East Java. The creators are kyai or da'i. This poem created to spread the teachings of Islam including akidah, syariah, and muamalah by means of an easy to remember so it was easy to be understood. In terms of firm, syingir closer to the pattern of traditional Arabic poem, syi'ir known as the pattern of al-Khalil. Usage that pattern was caused by penyingir are kiais that had been familiar with ilmul arudl wal-'-qafiyah, the science of rhythm and rhyme in Arabic poetry. While in the term of content, syingir as a religious message is the transformation of the contents of the Arabic poetry which is at-ta'lim (education).

Abstract

Banyuwangi folksongs are the cultural product of the Using ethnic community. They are the results of the interaction between the Using people and their natural and socio-cultural surroundings. As cultural products, the folksongs contain utterances having distinct characteristics, which, from a theoretical point of view, are cultural expression of the Using people. These utterances have a variety of speech styles reflecting the diversity of communication strategies of Using people. These various speech styles serve to unite ideas and make them coherent, to articulate and emphasize the meaning of the utterances, and to develop the characteristics of the utterances. In the Using language, the use of these various speech styles reflect the social dynamics of the Using people in expressing politeness in their speech.

Abstract

Getting messages across to a large audience of diverse backgrounds is a challenge. MoveOn.org is successful in responding to the challenge when writing its campaigns in a language intelligible to all members. This research studies the characteristics of English used in MoveOn’s campaigns during the periods of January 25, to March 30, 2011. It reveals that the campaigns choose ordinary words (neither politically charged nor hyperbolic) to maintain neutrality and situation-problem-solution pattern for its rhetorical structure in order to convey an easy-to-follow argument. The research concludes that MoveOn designs its campaigns to produce persuasive effects that are more rational based than emotional-based.

Abstract

This writing describes the form and the meaning of denominal adjectives in Javanese, especially derivatived through affixation process by applied qualitative-descriptive method. In the Javanese denominal adjectives can be in the form of N-D, mi-D, -um-D, D-an, D-en, and N-D-i. Each formatted denominal adjectives expressed a particular meaning.

Abstract

Thisarticle is an initiative to develop the maritime anthropology field of study that up till now is stagnant and tends to be concerned with the surface structure of the maritime cultural phenomena. By application of the concept of reproduction maritime ethos disposition in explaining the navigational experience and maritime interaction of Bugis-Makassar seamen, some of their maritime cultural valuescan be discovered. Attitudes and main values such as knowledge and navigation skills, adaptation with physical environment and socio-culture, water spatial concept, brave and like adventure, hard working and competitive, honest and trustable, loyal and responsible, openness and freedom, strict to attitude and religious, collectivism, etc. which were applied in the trading and sailing activities of the Bugis-Makassar sailors can be understood as maritime cultural values. Indonesia maritime cultural values of Bugis-Makassar are also in the forms of awareness and diversity of values and relationships between ethnic groups and cultures, love to the country, language unity, and nationality. This article isbased on historical annotation of Bugis-Makassar seamenship and field work data from Bira (Bugis region) and Paotere (Makassar region) conducted in six months (from April to September 2010).Keywords: Bugis-Makassar seamen, seamenship experience, maritime culture reproduction.

Abstract

Yogyakarta masih dipandang sebagai salah satu kiblat budaya Jawa, tetapi pola pikir masyarakat Yogyakarta saat ini telah banyak berubah dari gambaran umumnya masyarakat Jawa. Perubahan tersebut tidak lepas dari berkembangnya lembaga pendidikan modern yang menanamkan rasionalisme yang menggeser mistikisme sebagai basis ideologi dan budaya. Namun demikian, sisa-sisa kepercayaanJawa masih terlihat pada beberapa ritual tradisi yang terkadang telah banyak kehilangan signifikansi ideologinya. Abstract

Pengetahuan yang tersembunyi di balik wacana pariwisata dalam pidato kenegaraan Presiden Soeharto 16 Agustus 1968 dijadikan kekuasaan oleh pemerintah daerah Bali dengan cara mengeluarkan ungkapan wacana Pariwisata Budaya. Akan tetapi, pariwisata yang semula diharapkan mampu menjadisalah satu sumber devisa negara, mengalami kemandekan tahun 1976 dan berlangsung selama satu dekade. Hal itu memberikan peluang bagi intelektual organik konservatif dari berbagai aliran untuk meraih kepentingan kelompok masing-masing. Itulah sebabnya di balik pengelolaan industri pariwisatatersembunyi relasi-relasi kekuasaan. Fenomena tersembunyi itu diterangkan dalam studi ini dengan memakai kerangka berpikir Michel Foucault tentang Power And Knowledge. Penggunaan kerangka berpikir itu memudahkan penerapan metode sejarah mulai dari heuristik hingga sintesis. Melalui cara kerja itu, dapat diketahui hampir semua intelektual organik konservatif yang memiliki kekuasaanberbicara berhasil menangkap pengetahuan tersembunyi di balik ungkapan wacana Pariwisata Budaya untuk kepentingan kelompok masing-masing.Kata Kunci: pariwisata budaya, PKB, Ekadasarudra, invented art, intelektual organik

Abstract

Pada hakikatnya seni tradisi merupakan sebuah ekspresi kultural sebagai subjek kolektif yang terikat oleh karakteristik ranah budaya masing-masing sehingga identitas dan nilai kearifan lokalnya turut terbawa serta. Pandangan multikultural yang menjunjung tinggi kesetaraan budaya mengakui eksistensi tradisi lisan yang melekat pada setiap etnisitas pribumi sehingga penelitian terhadap seni tradisi selayaknya dilakukan oleh peneliti pribumi yang memiliki pengalaman seumur hidup terhadap ikatan primordial budayanya. Untuk itu, konsep baru dalam penelitian seni berdasarkan konsep multikultural dan etnisitas pribumi memiliki arti penting terhadap pencapaian tingkat kebenaran dan kesahihan hasil penelitian.Kata Kunci: multikultural, etnisitas pribumi, seni tradisi
