Abstract

This study examines the correlation between muhkam verses and nasikh wal mansukh in determining Islamic legal rulings. Muhkam verses, characterized by their clear and explicit meanings, and nasikh wal mansukh, referring to the abrogation of certain laws within the Qur'an, are foundational concepts in 'ulum al-Qur'an. The research utilizes a qualitative methodology, involving detailed textual analysis of primary Qur'anic verses and secondary scholarly interpretations. The findings reveal that while muhkam verses provide explicit legal instructions, the principles of nasikh wal mansukh allow for the adaptation of these laws in response to changing social and historical contexts. This dynamic interplay ensures that Islamic legal rulings remain relevant and effective across different eras and circumstances. The study highlights the necessity of understanding the conditions and implications of abrogation in Islamic law and underscores the importance of contextual and scholarly engagement in the interpretation and application of Qur'anic teachings. This comprehensive analysis contributes to the broader discourse on the flexibility and timeless applicability of Islamic law, demonstrating its capacity to address contemporary legal challenges without contradicting core religious principles.

Abstract

The Qur'an commands Muslims to observe and interpret the universe rationally, considering natural phenomena as signs of Allah's existence and guidance for humankind. This study explores the Qur'anic method of da'wah through verses inviting reflection on the universe. Employing a qualitative research design and a thematic analysis approach, the study examines Qur'anic verses related to natural phenomena and their implications for da'wah. Primary data sources include ayat kawniyyah (verses about natural phenomena) from the Qur'an, with secondary data from classical and contemporary Islamic scholarship, tafsir literature, and scientific studies on environmental preservation. The analysis reveals that the Qur'an emphasizes the observation and study of the universe, highlighting its creation, balance, and order by Allah. The study identifies three main da'wah methods: da’wah bi al-Hāl (concrete actions in environmental conservation), da’wah bi al-lisan (rational and scientific argumentation), and da’wah bi al-qalb (fostering opposition to environmental destruction). The findings underscore the importance of integrating spiritual, philosophical, and practical dimensions in environmental stewardship.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the Qur'anic verses that mention "ulū al-albāb." Using a qualitative research design and content analysis, the primary data were sourced from the Qur'an, while secondary data were collected from tafsir texts and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that "ulū al-albāb" possess profound intellectual and spiritual insight, characterized by knowledge, adherence to divine covenants, maintaining family ties, fear of God, patience, prayer, altruism, and repelling evil with good. These attributes distinguish them from ordinary intelligent individuals. "Ulū al-albāb" are well-suited to lead and implement "dakwah" (Islamic propagation), especially in methods requiring deep understanding and strategic implementation. They are expected to serve as agents of social change by occupying significant positions in societal institutions, leveraging their influence to drive positive transformations. This study highlights the importance of integrating textual and contextual approaches in understanding "dakwah" and the critical role of "ulū al-albāb" in Islamic thought and social change.

Abstract

This study explores Abd al-Rauf's influence within the geographic and historical milieu of Aceh, focusing on his contributions during the reign of four sultanas and his role as Qadi Malik al-Adil. It underscores his historical approach to Quranic exegesis and efforts to make Quranic teachings accessible to Malay-speaking audiences. Using a systematic literature review, the study analyzes 21 key documents on Abd al-Rauf's contributions. Documents were selected based on relevance to three themes: geographic and historical context, tafsir methodology, and Quranic translation. Findings reveal that 43% of the literature highlights Abd al-Rauf's historical influence, 19% discusses his tafsir methodology, especially in Turjuman al-Mustafid, and 38% examines his translation of the Quran into Malay using the Jawi script. The study concludes that Abd al-Rauf's contributions have significantly enriched the Islamic intellectual tradition in Southeast Asia, enhancing the region's scholarly and cultural heritage and providing a foundation for ongoing research into Quranic exegesis and Islamic teachings in the Malay world.

Abstract

This article explores the intricate Qur’anic discourse on human nature, emphasizing the dualism of human existence and the potential for both moral elevation and descent. Employing thematic Tafsir, the study elucidates how the Qur’an portrays human beings as creatures of complex constitution—body, soul, and intellect—crafted in the most perfect form but susceptible to degradation to the lowest states. It further investigates negative human traits such as miserliness, impulsiveness, and injustice, providing a deep dive into traditional exegeses and contemporary interpretations. By analyzing these traits through the Qur’anic lens, the paper offers insights into the ethical and moral challenges humans face and the divine guidance provided to overcome these. Methodologically, the research synthesizes Qur’anic verses and scholarly interpretations, enriched by insights from Sufism and psychology, to construct a comprehensive understanding of human emotional and moral states. The findings suggest that awareness and self-reflection are crucial in mitigating negative traits and fostering a moral and spiritually aligned life.

Abstract

This article delves into the concept of “goodness” (al-khair) within Islamic teachings as interpreted from the Qur’an, exploring its nuanced and context-dependent meanings. Al-khair in Arabic signifies all that is good and beneficial, standing in contrast to al-syar, which represents evil and wrongdoing. This study employs a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, utilizing a detailed examination of Qur’anic verses, Tafsir literature, and Hadiths to unravel the layered meanings of al-khair. Our findings highlight that al-khair not only encompasses moral and social virtues but also material aspects such as wealth and physical well-being. The term is comparable to thayyibun, husnun, birrun, and ma’ruffun in the Qur’an, each carrying distinct but sometimes overlapping meanings. The analysis distinguishes three key dimensions of al-khair: the ultimate good deeds chosen for humanity, the commendable acts ordained by Allah, and attributes often associated with Allah’s characteristics. The study concludes that while goodness is generally perceived as desirable, its interpretation can vary significantly, leading to both positive and negative outcomes depending on the context.

Abstract

The Al-Naqsyabandiyah Al-Khālidiyah Tariqah is one of the influential Sufi orders in the development of Islamic spirituality, with the significant role of the mursyid in guiding disciples toward closeness to God. This study aims to examine the existence of the mursyid in guiding disciples and analyze whether the concepts of tawasul and rabitah associated with the mursyid contradict the principles of tawhid and authentic Islamic teachings. The methodology used includes a literature review and textual analysis of classical works and contemporary literature related to the Al-Naqsyabandiyah Al-Khālidiyah Tariqah, the role of the mursyid, tawasul, and rabitah, as well as interviews with practitioners of the order to explore their perspectives. The findings indicate that the mursyid plays a vital role in the spiritual development of disciples in the Al-Naqsyabandiyah Al-Khālidiyah Tariqah. Additionally, tawasul and rabitah are not considered shirk in the context of this tariqah, but are seen as legitimate means to draw closer to Allah, provided they remain within the framework of tawhid. In conclusion, the existence of the mursyid is essential in this tariqah, and the practice of tawasul and rabitah can be accepted as long as it does not deviate from authentic Islamic teachings

Abstract

The traditional perspective that perceives disasters as acts of divine destiny underwent a critical transformation following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. This classical view, which rendered communities passive in the face of disaster risks, has been progressively replaced by a more proactive understanding. Religious scholars (ulama) have played a pivotal role in fostering this transformation, encouraging communities to adopt active, participatory, and organized approaches to disaster risk reduction (DRR). This qualitative field study, conducted in Gampong Deah Glumpang, Banda Aceh, investigates two primary aspects: the management approaches of DRR programs implemented in the village and their impact on enhancing the community’s understanding and participation in building disaster resilience two decades after the tsunami. The findings reveal that local religious leaders significantly influenced the community’s shift from perceiving disasters as unchangeable divine decrees to recognizing the importance of proactive mitigation efforts. Through religiously grounded narratives, these leaders mobilized the community to actively engage in DRR initiatives, including risk mapping, contingency planning, and environmental conservation, as facilitated by the Banda Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI). The integration of religious teachings with DRR frameworks proved effective in transforming perceptions, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering inclusivity, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Abstract

Al-Ghazali, a pivotal scholar in Islamic intellectual history, is renowned for his systematic critique of philosophical ideas that challenged Islamic theology during his time. His landmark work, Tahafut al-Falasifah (The Incoherence of the Philosophers), addressed the doctrines of prominent Muslim philosophers such as Al-Farabi and Ibn Sina, who sought to reconcile Greek philosophy with Islamic teachings. Using a library-based research approach and analytical methods, this study examines Al-Ghazali’s refutations, particularly his objections to the concepts of the universe's eternity, God’s limited knowledge of particulars, and the denial of bodily resurrection. By categorizing philosophical thought into acceptable, heretical, and unbelief categories, Al-Ghazali delineated the boundaries of religious orthodoxy in response to these debates. His critical approach not only fortified Islamic theological principles but also established a framework for reconciling reason and faith. This study underscores Al-Ghazali’s enduring influence in Islamic thought and highlights the relevance of his arguments in contemporary discussions on philosophy and religion.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Tuha Peut in resolving family conflicts in Gampong Reudeup, Panteraja Subdistrict, Pidie Jaya District, within the framework of Robert K. Merton’s structural-functional theory. As a customary institution at the village level, Tuha Peut is formally mandated to maintain social order through deliberation, mediation, and legal oversight. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify the manifest, latent, and dysfunctional roles of Tuha Peut in conflict resolution. The findings reveal that Tuha Peut performs manifest functions as a mediator and decision-maker in resolving domestic disputes, while its latent functions include reinforcing communal values and informal cohesion mechanisms. However, the study also identifies structural dysfunctions, particularly related to gender representation. Several female informants expressed discomfort engaging with Tuha Peut directly, often relying instead on informal female figures such as Ibu Ros to mediate access. This phenomenon suggests a gap between formal institutional structures and the lived experiences of community members. The study concludes that while Tuha Peut contributes significantly to social stability, its legitimacy and effectiveness are contingent upon its capacity to evolve. Institutional reforms—especially gender inclusion and the recognition of informal mediators—are essential to ensuring that Tuha Peut fulfills not only its legal mandate but also its social responsibilities in an inclusive and representative manner.
