Abstract

This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of Pope Francis' apostolic journey to Indonesia in September 2024, using George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interaction Theory. The research focuses on how the symbolic actions, words, and objects during the visit were interpreted by Indonesian society, particularly in the context of interfaith relations. The study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing literature study techniques to analyze primary sources such as official documents, speeches, and media reports, as well as secondary sources like academic journals and books. The findings reveal that Pope Francis' visit carried profound symbolic meanings, particularly through his gestures (e.g., kissing the hand of the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque), speeches, and the signing of the Istiqlal Declaration on Religious Harmony. These actions were widely perceived as promoting interfaith dialogue and solidarity, although some skepticism existed among certain groups. This research contributes to the understanding of how symbolic interactions can foster interfaith harmony in a multicultural society like Indonesia, offering insights for future studies on religious diplomacy and public reception of symbolic actions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Ainun Jamilah and the Cadar Garis Lucu community in combating the negative stigma against veiled women in Indonesia, as well as to analyze the impact of the peace movement promoted through social media. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach (quantitative-qualitative) through the collection of survey data, in-depth interviews, and online observation, particularly focusing on the Cadar Garis Lucu Instagram account (@cadargarislucu). The study found a contradiction in public perceptions; where although many still view veiled women with a negative stigma, they also support the peace efforts carried out by veiled women via digital platforms. Through the Cadar Garis Lucu movement, Ainun Jamilah plays a key role in redefining the image of veiled women by promoting the values of religious moderation and peace. Through various educational content and interfaith dialogues, she facilitates, Ainun has successfully introduced a new face of veiled women as open, inclusive, and tolerant despite still facing negative stigma related to their appearance. This research contributes to the understanding of how social media can be used to advocate for peace and reduce stigma against marginalized groups. The contribution of this study lies in the application of religious moderation theory in the digital context and the use of social media to promote inclusivity and intergroup dialogue.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a country with high religious diversity, faces challenges in maintaining interfaith harmony, particularly in the post-Reform era of 1998, which expanded religious freedom while also increasing the risk of religion-based conflicts. This study aims to analyze the paradigm of interfaith relations in the post-Reform period and its contribution to resolving religious conflicts. Using a qualitative approach based on literature studies, this research examines various theories and perspectives of interfaith figures. The key findings indicate four phases in the dynamics of interfaith relations in Indonesia: the interfaith dialogue phase, which led to the emergence of interreligious communities; the advocacy phase, which focused on defending religious freedom rights; the creative campaign phase, which disseminated messages of tolerance through innovative media; and the intersectional phase, which integrates multiple approaches to develop inclusive policies. The academic contribution of this research lies in integrating various paradigms of thought, including neo-modernism, democratic socialism, universalism, liberative modernism, universal humanism, and non-violent conflict resolution, which can be implemented in religious diversity policies in Indonesia. However, this study has limitations in empirical research, and further studies are recommended to assess the effectiveness of these approaches through direct case studies and more specific policy analyses.

Abstract

Indonesian cinema has often portrayed the theme of marriage between different religions occasionally. These problems frequently occur in society and trigger a complicated negotiation process between the individuals concerned. The difficulty of negotiation is because religion and marriage have significant consequences for the stability of family and community networks, so decision-making is based on many considerations. The prohibition of marriages of different religions raises questions regarding the compelling ways for couples of various faiths to deal with the inner and physical conflicts caused by these events. This research examines the negotiation patterns of different religious couples in Indonesian films (Ayat-Ayat Cinta 1, Tanda Tanya, and Akhirat: A Love Story). Roland Barthes' semiotic theory and Gordon Allport's theory of religion are used in this study to examine the issue. The research can show how the three films offer a process of contemplation that ultimately leads the characters to make wise decisions and maintain broader harmonization.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the dual role of religion in contemporary society—as both a source of tolerance and a driver of intolerance—by critically analyzing the socio-political, cultural, and global contexts that shape religious discourse. The research responds to the urgency of understanding religion beyond theological essentialism, emphasizing the need for a sociological approach to interpret the contradictory manifestations of religion in plural societies. Employing a qualitative design through critical literature review, the study analyzes academic texts and discourse on religion using thematic content analysis. The data sources include influential works by Diana Eck, John Hick, Mark Juergensmeyer, Karen Armstrong, Jeremy Menchik, Robert Hefner, and others. The findings reveal three significant patterns: religion as a moral force fostering interfaith dialogue; religion as an ideological tool legitimizing social exclusion; and the ambivalent image of religion shaped by state politics, popular media, and transnational religious networks. The study demonstrates that religion is never neutral—it is continuously constructed and contested within power relations, identity politics, and symbolic representation. These insights underscore the functional and dysfunctional roles of religion in shaping social cohesion and polarization. The implications of this research highlight the urgency of promoting critical religious literacy, interfaith education, and inclusive public policies that prevent the instrumentalization of religion for sectarian or authoritarian interests. The originality of this study lies in its multidimensional mapping of the social construction of religion, shifting the analytical lens from sacred texts to contextual forces. By integrating classic sociological theories with the Indonesian context, this research offers a comprehensive and contextually grounded contribution to the sociology of religion.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integrative concept of Islamic humanism formulated by Ahmad Syafii Maarif in the context of Indonesian socio-political dynamics and religious pluralism. The research addresses the critical need to bridge Islamic values, Indonesian identity, and humanitarian ethics in response to the rise of religious exclusivism and secular-liberal tendencies. Employing a qualitative approach with a library research design, this study applies thematic coding to analyze primary texts by Syafii Maarif and relevant scholarly interpretations. The findings reveal that Syafii Maarif offers a paradigm of substantive Islam that harmonizes rationality, democracy, and social ethics while rejecting formalistic and doctrinaire approaches to religion. His thought draws inspiration from reformist figures such as Fazlur Rahman and Muhammad Iqbal, but is distinct in its contextual application within Indonesian democracy and civil society. The implications of this study suggest the need for a reorientation of Islamic discourse in Indonesia toward inclusivity, pluralism, and active citizenship. This research contributes to the development of Islamic thought by presenting a comprehensive and contextualized interpretation of Islam that affirms both national identity and universal humanitarian values. The originality of this research lies in its integration of philosophical, theological, and political dimensions within a single conceptual framework, offering new insights into the role of Islam in fostering democratic ethics and social cohesion in plural societies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the limitations of ethical green consumption as a solution to the environmental crisis, highlighting how such practices operate within an economic system that in fact reinforces ecological degradation. Green consumption is seen as incapable of addressing the root causes of the crisis, as it remains trapped in the logic of endless growth, commodification, and the individualization of ecological responsibility. This research is crucial given the increasing popularity of ethical consumption narratives in policymaking and popular culture, despite their often illusory contributions to sustainability. The study employs a qualitative approach grounded in semiotics and interpretive analysis. Data are collected through a literature review of academic texts, policy documents, and media narratives that engage with the concepts of green consumption and degrowth. The analysis deconstructs signs, symbols, and metaphors within sustainability discourse and situates them within broader social and ideological contexts. The main finding reveals that ethical green consumption functions as an ideological mechanism that stabilizes the capitalist economic system through moral aesthetics, rather than as a transformative effort that addresses the ecological crisis at its root. The discourses of green growth and sustainable development promoted by global institutions are framed in technocratic language that conceals power relations, global inequality, and ecological imperialism. In contrast, degrowth emerges as an alternative paradigm that proposes a redefinition of prosperity based on sufficiency, redistribution, reciprocity, and global ecological justice—particularly through selective contraction in wealthy nations and development autonomy for the Global South. The study's implications point to the need for a shift in sustainability policy and culture—from an emphasis on individual responsibility toward systemic transformation and global justice. This research contributes original insights by integrating semiotic analysis and critical theory to uncover the growth ideology embedded in green consumption and by rearticulating degrowth not as austerity, but as a political, ecological, and social vision for a just and sustainable future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of Pancasila as the nation’s philosophy in ensuring justice and equality for minority groups, particularly nonagama, who have long received limited attention in both academic discourse and public policy. The research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method and thematic as well as critical document analysis of discourses on nonagama and interpretations of Pancasila’s principles, especially the first precept. The findings reveal three main obstacles faced by nonagama groups in attaining justice and equality: (1) the exclusive interpretation of Pancasila’s first precept, (2) a prevailing social paradigm that links morality with religiosity, and (3) low public awareness of pluralistic values. These findings imply the need for a reconstruction of understanding Pancasila in a more inclusive and open manner, so that it can guarantee constitutional rights for all citizens without discrimination. The originality of this research lies in its focus on nonagama groups from the perspective of Pancasila—an area rarely addressed in previous studies—thus contributing new insights to the discourse on pluralism, inclusivity, and human rights in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how exclusive and literalist interpretations of Qur’anic verses on warfare, such as QS. At-Taubah:5and QS. Al-Anfāl:12, have become one of the roots of religious radicalism and to offer a framework for reconstructing interpretation that is more ethical and contextual. The research employs a qualitative-critical approach through library research, using Fazlur Rahman’s double-movement hermeneutics, Michel Foucault’s analysis of power relations, and the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ahas analytical tools. Data were collected from classical tafsirs (al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī), modern tafsirs (Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Mishbāh), and contemporary academic literature. The findings reveal that literalist exegesis, when detached from its historical context and ethical purposes, legitimizes violence and fuels exclusivism, while contextual exegesis offers an inclusive framework that fosters dialogue, reconciliation, and social justice. This study also shows that exegesis is not ideologically neutral but often functions as an arena of power contestation, where interpretation can either reinforce domination or become a discourse of liberation against fundamentalism. The implications highlight the urgent need to integrate contextual hermeneutics into religious education curricula, strengthen exegetical literacy in public discourse, and promote interreligious dialogue as a means to counter radicalism. The originality of this research lies in its interdisciplinary integration of hermeneutics, power analysis, and socio-political context, which provides a comprehensive framework for reinterpreting Qur’anic war verses in a way that is faithful to the text yet responsive to contemporary plural realities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practices of social domination and the experiences of alienation encountered by Gregor Samsa in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis through the integration of Seeman’s Alienation Theory and Pratto’s Social Dominance Theory. This investigation emerges from the need to understand how power relations within the family sphere and pressures from the capitalist work system shape conditions of estrangement that erode an individual’s identity, dignity, and social relations. The research employs a qualitative approach using close reading techniques applied to the literary text. The analysis is strengthened by Abrams’s model, which emphasizes the relationship between text, reader, and contemporary social context, thereby enabling a more interdisciplinary interpretation. The findings reveal that Gregor experiences the five forms of alienation identified by Seeman—powerlessness, meaninglessness, social isolation, self-estrangement, and anomie. These forms of alienation emerge as direct consequences of the family’s structure of domination, led by the father and reproduced by Grete, and are further reinforced by pressures from the capitalist economic system that reduces Gregor to an instrument of production. The results demonstrate that social domination operates not only through physical and symbolic power but also through internalization processes that lead Gregor to accept himself as “the other,” ultimately causing the loss of his identity and the meaning of his existence. This study offers an original contribution by addressing a gap in the literature through the integration of Seeman’s and Pratto’s theoretical frameworks—a combination rarely applied in Kafka studies—to show that alienation cannot be understood solely as a psychological phenomenon but must be viewed as the outcome of structural power relations within the family. The study also affirms that literary works can serve as reflective media for examining the dynamics of domination, structural violence, and the erosion of human dignity in contemporary social realities.
