Abstract

This paper examines the refinement of language which is more polite expressions to avoid statement that are felt rude, which is a thesis entitled “Communicative Functions of Euphemism in Minang Language as a Reflection of Eastern Tradition”. This research uses a semantic approach, identifying the form of euphemism in Minang Language. The basis of the theory used is using the theory of Allan and Burridge (1991), in this theory explaining the function of euphemisms. This guides the community to have a more polite attitude in speaking. This manners in speaking are called Langgam Kato, namely Kato Mandaki (which is a greeting word used for people who are older or of higher social status), Kato Manurun (a greeting word used for people who are younger or of lower social status), Kato Malereng (which is a greeting word used for people who are in the same position and respect each other in a family relationship) and Kato Mandata (a greeting word used for people who are the same age or the same in terms of age, social status and closer relationship or familiar).

Abstract

This study discusses the translation of Indonesian into Japanese used in the tourist attractions at theMaimun Palace in Medan's cultural vocabulary. The issue at hand in this study is how to categorizetranslations from Indonesian, the source language (SL), into Japanese, the target language (BSa). Thepurpose of this study is to identify the types of translation as well as the translation of Indonesian, thesource language, into Japanese, the target language. In this study, a descriptive qualitative methodwas employed to gather data. The dialogue between one of the tour guides about the history of theMaimun Palace, a well-known tourist destination in the city of Medan, served as the research's sourceof data. In many ways, Maimun Palace still effectively preserves culture. In that civilization, materialculture such as traditional culture, which is concentrated and carefully preserved and which the palacefoundation promised to maintain, still holds the values and forms of material culture. According to thefindings of this study's data on translation categories, the writer will divide the cultural informationvocabulary categories obtained using Newmark's theory (1988), namely there is a category of Material(Artefacts) consisting of from 5 vocabulary in the building field, 4 vocabulary in place field, and 6vocabulary in equipment field after translating the Indonesian story into Japanese. Also included arethe Ecology category, which has 1 geographic vocabulary and 7 environmental/regional vocabulary,and the Social category, which has 4 greeting words, 2 job words, and 1 entertainment word.

Abstract

This article presents and idiomatic analysis of the lyrics of Nadin Amizah, a talented Indonesian singer. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative methods, The data in this study were taken directly from Nadin Amizah's " Bertaut " Song lyrics. The article Begins by providing an overview of Nadin Amizah's highlighting and her use of posting storytelling and evocative imagery. It theb focuses on a line examination of the lyrics, identifying the idiomatic expressions employed and uncovering their underlying meanings. Thus, this research found 4 Simile Idiom in this research analysis that explained in the result and discussion part and this research also an correct the misunderstanding of the meaning of a song lyric that contains idioms so that the message in the song is conveyed correctly. Abstract

The oldest large-scale temple in Japan is Asukadera (Gangoji Temple), which has a five-story pagoda (tō), a main hall (kondō) encircled by a covered corridor (kairo), an assembly hall (kōdō), and a number of auxiliary structures. And the gate (mon), which serves as the Asukadera complex's entryway. It took a while to create this temple, which was built with the assistance of laborers from Paekche. Because it takes a lot of labor to construct a big temple. Building construction must begin with the preparation of building materials such wood, stone, clay, and others before work can begin. The first pagoda was constructed first, then the kond and other structures. Every structure in Asukadera serves a specific purpose. It is used to store holy items, much to a kondō, which is used to house artwork or Buddha statues. Pagoda used as a repository for Buddhist artifacts. Assembly hall (kōdō), used for meetings or as a study location. The overall goal of this article is to learn more about the origin and history of Asukadera's construction as well as the purpose and significance of each of the complex's buildings. This essay makes use of both the library approach and the findings from related studies.

Abstract

In recent years, K-pop has expanded around all over the world, and its fans have created special ways that refer to their idols, such making use of animal emojis. This study examines how animal emojis are used in K-pop to convey alternate meanings, particularly when used in place of idol names. The study utilized a qualitative approach with the theory of reference as the theoretical framework. Data was collected from social media platforms, Twitter. The findings suggest that the use of animal emojis in K-pop culture serves as a form of the unique characteristics of the K-pop community and also a solution to convey meaning effectively within Twitter’s limitation characters. The discipline of cyber-pragmatics, or the study of language use in digital communication, is pertinent to this investigation. As a type of digital communication, the use of animal emojis in K-pop culture demonstrates how fans have adapted to the digital age and created their own language and communication style.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the categories and semantic roles of verbs in Prince William's oath of allegiance during the coronation of King Charles III. The paper employs a qualitative approach. The researchers used documentation techniques to gather data by reading or watching various data sources from YouTube and media articles, and taking note of the required data. Data analysis was conducted using analytical techniques. Based on the data analysis, the following results were obtained. First, the researchers identified the semantic categories of verbs in Prince William's oath of allegiance at King Charles III's coronation. The verb categories are 'pledge' and 'bear'. Second, the verb "pledge" belongs to the category of action verbs. Additionally, the verb "bear" also belongs to the category of action verbs.

Abstract

The causative verb is one of a lesson that is discussed in grammar. Learning grammar has never been easy for anyone because of its complexity. The same thing goes for learning causative verbs. It can be both easy and challenging at the same time because sometimes the usage of causative verbs can be confusing. This study was meant to find out how well the ability of the students of the University of Sumatera Utara in the English Department in understanding and applying causative verbs. The method used in this research is the quantitative method. Google Forms is used in this research as the instrument of the research in multiple choices forms. The result is needed to find out the ability of the students to perform causative verbs. The results of this research show that the ability of students of the University of Sumatera Utara in the English Department is in the upper middle category, which is shown from the student’s test results, which is 68%. This research is expected that it will be useful for researchers, students, and teachers in understanding causative verbs.

Abstract

In the era of growing social media, Instagram is one of the platforms that can be utilized to facilitate interactive foreign language learning. The purpose of this study is to utilize Instagram as a digital-based social media in reading stories using Japanese so that it is expected that students can be more active, brave and expressive in reading so that the content of the story can be conveyed properly, students can also be more creative in making interesting videos by utilizing the many features contained in Instagram. This research method adopted a descriptive qualitative approach involving 22 students. Students were given texts in Japanese writing, chose one of the texts to study which then had to be read out in the form of a video that was uploaded to each student's Instagram account according to the conditions that had been given. Research data were collected through participant observation, questionnaires, and analysis of the results of the tasks uploaded to Instagram. The results showed that learning to read Japanese stories on Instagram provides benefits in the development of reading skills. Students demonstrated comprehension of the text in their target language. There was also high motivation and satisfaction with the Instagram learning experience. This study provides insight into the potential of Instagram as one of the learning media in reading Japanese stories.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of taboo words, described the meaning of taboo words and each types to find the results of the percentage and dominant of taboo words. The research method used in completing this thesis was descriptive qualitative approach. In analyzing the data, theory of Wardhaugh (2006) was used to classifies the categories of taboo words and types of the informants utterances. This research used the method of interviews by the informants as sociolinguistics approach and use a field research in Medan local language. The result of this research showed that there were 14 data that has been classifies into the types of taboo words where the dominant was death and excretion (28,58%) with each 4 (four) data. Next, followed by sex term with 3 (three) data, body function with 3 (three) data, religious matter with nol data, and politics with nol data.

Abstract

Indonesian as the national language has so far experienced very rapid development so that it is in great demand from other countries. This development has made Indonesian ready to become an international communication tool. In order to become an international language, it is necessary to introduce Indonesian with interesting learning. Interesting learning by designing innovative teaching materials. Teaching materials for listening, reading, writing and speaking language skills for level A1. In addition, BIPA teaching materials take advantage of existing cultures in Indonesia by introducing Indonesian characteristics to foreign speakers in the hope that this will attract them to learn Indonesian. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. By describing teaching materials for Indonesian language skills, it will increase learning knowledge for BIPA teachers.
