Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tentang pengaruh penggunaan film pendek terhadap prestasi siswa dalam menulis teks nararif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan Film Pendek terhadap prestasi siswa dalam menulis teks naratif. Peneliti menerapkan metode kuantitatif menggunakan pre-test, perlakuan, dan post-test. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA Pangeran Antasari Medan, pada siswa kelas X IPA dan IPS. Total populasi adalah 52 siswa dengan 26 siswa kelas experimental dan 26 siswa kelas kontrol. Kelas experimental adalah kelas yang mendapat pengajaran dengan menggunakan Film Pendek dan kelas kontrol adalah kelas tanpa menggunakan Film Pendek. Peneliti memberikan tes dalam bentuk menulis esai tes. Para siswa harus menjawab soal pre-test dan post-test dengan soal yang sama. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan rumus t-tes. Analisis menunjukkan bahwa nilai siswa dengan pengajaran menggunakan Film Pendek berbeda sinifikan dari siswa tanpa menggunakan Film Pendek. Nilai t-tesnya adalah 2.21 sedangkan nilai t-tabelnya adalah 1.676. Artinya ada pengaruh yang signifikan menggunakan film pendek pada prestasi siswa dalam menulis teks naratif, karena 2.61 ≥ 1.676.

Abstract

This research deals with Figurative Language in Westlife's Selected Song Lyrics. The objective of the research was to find out the types of figurative language, to find out the most dominant type of figurative language found in Westlife's song lyrics, and to find out the reasons for the most dominant type of figurative language used in Westlife's Selected Song Lyrics. The data of the study were figurative language found in Westlife's song lyrics. The results of research, there were four types of figurative language used in Westlife's song lyrics, namely: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, with the total data consists of 48 (forty-eight) data with a percentage of 100%. From the total data, metaphor found as many as 12 (twelve) data with percentage (25%), simile found as many as 5 (five) data with percentage (10, 42%), personification found as many as 12 (twelve) data with percentage (25%), hyperbole found as many as 19 (nineteen) data with percentage (39, 58%). Almost all Westlife songs are about love that uses hyperbole so that the language used is perfect, beautiful, easy to understand, and makes things sound more dramatic, especially for couples who are in love.

Abstract

Artikel ini berjudul “A conflict in J.D Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye”. Masalah dalam kajian artikel adalah, Apakah jenis konflik yang muncul di dalam novel, mengapa konflik muncul diantara karakter novel, dan apakah pengaruh konflik terhadap karakter di J.D Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. Kajian artikel ini menggunakan pendekatandescriptive qualitative method.Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa karakter utama menghadapi konflik internal dimana dia takut menjadi pribadi dewasa dengan terus bersikap kekanakan. Tokoh utama juga menghadapi external konflik a). man vs man, b). man vs social and c).manvs nature.Karakter utama menganggap pribadi orang dewasa adalah pribadi yangpura - pura, materialistis, dan munafik. Tokoh utama juga menderita kehidupan mental yang tidak berimbang karena saudaranya meninggal dunia walaupun dia sangat berharapnya untuk hidup lebih lama.Semua hal tersebut menyebabkan tokoh utama dalam novel mengasingkan diri dari lingkungan dan konflik ini menyebabkan dia menderita depresi dan harus dirawat dirumah sakit.

Abstract

This study discusses about Deixis. It is the term from Greek which means pointing by language. This study aims at finding the types of Deixis used in John Legend’s selected songs’ lyrics and finding the types of Deixis most dominantly used in John Legend’s selected songs’ lyrics. This study was applied by using descriptive qualitative design. Having analyzed the data, the findings of this study are: (a)There are three kinds of deixis found in John Legend’s songs, they are person deixis, time deixis and place deixis; (b) Person deixis is the most dominantly used in John Legend’s songs; 86.86%. The writer suggests that the students should learn Deixis as clear as possible because it is the most fundamental thing that should be mastered and the teacher or instructor of English language can teach the students about Deixis by using many written forms, such as songs’ lyrics, poems, novels, drama’s scripts and others.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang Bad Leadership in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Analisis dalam tesis ini difokuskan pada ciri-ciri pemimpin yang buruk sesuai dengan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Kellerman dalam novella Animal Farm yang ditulis oleh George Orwell. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik dan ekstrinsik karena penelitian ini dihubungkan dengan novel sendiri dan bidang sosiologi yang dihubungkan dengan kepemimpinan yang buruk. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan rancangan kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ciri-ciri yang dimiliki Napoleon sebagai pemimpin yang buruk adalah tidak berperasaan, korup dan jahat. Ciri-ciri yang dimiliki oleh Napoleon menyebabkan dia dikategorikan sebagai pemimpin yang tidak etis.

Abstract

This research deals with The Use of Euphemism in Toba Batak Movies. This research is conducted to find out the types, styles and functions of euphemism in Batak movies. The descriptive qualitative method is the research design of this study. The data were collected from Batak movies through the process of watching the movies, transcribing the data and selecting the euphemistic words or phrases which were relevant to be the data. As the result, the research found: there were four types of euphemism, they were metaphor, general for specific, idiom, and hyperbole; there were three styles of euphemism: casual, consultative, and frozen; and there were three functions of euphemism: evaluate, informs, and formal.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze “Conjunction in Health columns of CNN News”. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of conjunction, to find out the most dominant type and to find out the reasons of the most dominant type of conjunction used in health columns of CNN News. This thesis was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The writer explained about conjunction by giving the samples of sentence found in health columns of CNN News and then the writer also makes list of sentences by using percentage formula. Coordinating conjunction, correlative conjunction, subordinating conjunction and conjunctive adverb are analyzed by using Herring’s theory (2016). There are four types of conjunctions that is used in health columns of CNN News as the result., they are coordinating conjunction, correlative conjunction, subordinating conjunction and conjunctive adverb. After analyzing health columns of CNN News, the writer concludes that coordinating conjunction is the most dominant type of conjunction found in health columns of CNN News with the total occurrences as many as 60,66%. The reason of why coordinating conjunction was the most dominant type because coordinating conjunction is the most common form of conjunctions and it also used to join two or more words, phrases or independet clauses.

Abstract

Studying English for at least seven years does not necessarily make students proficient in practicing English language learned include speaking. When the ability to use English orally has become one of the factors to get a good knowledge, economic independence and job security, it is deemed necessary to find out what problems are the students have to speaking English in order to build strategies to overcome the problems to students' speaking ability in the future. Thirty persons from second semester students of English department at University of Darma agung Medan participated in this study. The data regarding students’ English speaking were collected through questionnaire and speaking test. This study found that students experienced problems to speaking English. It was also revealed that the major problems of the students to speaking English due to the lack of effective transition of knowledge into practice which is caused by the lack of English basic knowledge and the influence of first language used, the disadvantaged socioeconomic factor, non-English classroom instructions, and English speaking anxiety.

Abstract

This research article focused on analyzing metaphor in selected pop songs of Batak Toba. This study used qualitative research in analyzing the data. The data of this study were the lyrics pop songs of Batak Toba. There were ten pop songs of Batak Toba analyzed in this study. The results of the study shown there were seven types of metaphor used in selected pop songs of Batak Toba. The seven types of metaphor used were: active metaphor consist of 13 lyrics (30,2%), approximation metaphor consist of 8 lyrics (18,6%), mimetic metaphor consist of 6 lyrics (13,9%), phenomenalistic metaphor consist of 6 lines (13,9%), subjective metaphor consist of 5 lyrics (11,6%), symbolism metaphor consist of 3 lyrics (6,9%), precision metaphor consist of 2 lyrics (4,6%). The most dominant type of metaphor that was used in selected pop songs of Batak Toba was active metaphor with the percentage 30,2%.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan penggunaan elipsis yang ditemukan pada lirik lagu Taylor Swift di album Fearless. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki jenis ellipsis, menentukan jenis dominan ellipsis, dan juga memberikan alasan penggunaan jenis ellipsis dominan dalam lirik lagu. Penelitian perpustakaan dilakukan untuk menggambarkan penggunaan elipsis dalam artikel. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data diambil dari lirik lagu Taylor Swift di album Fearless. Terdapat delapan belas lirik lagu di album Fearless. Hasilnya menemukan bahwa ada tiga elipsis yang ditemukan di album:Nominal Ellipsis (58%), Verbal Ellipsis (9,4%), Clausal Ellipsis (32,6%). Nominal Ellipsis adalah jenis elipsis yang paling dominan. Elipsis digunakan dalam lirik lagu untuk membuat kalimat dalam lirik lagu menjadi efektif, menghindari pengulangan, menghindari kemunculan kata benda yang berlebihan.
