This journal is managed by the English Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Letters of Darma Agung Univerity in collaboration with the UDA Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM). This journal contains the writings of lecturers, students and linguistic practitioners from both inside and outside the campus. This journal is published twice a year, in April and October.

Abstract

This paper discusses one of the ways to improve students‘ listening ability. Listening subject provides students with the materials of oral communication by English native speakers that mostly focuses on language expressions. It needs the learners to have listening practice a lot, inside and outside the classroom. Actually in teaching listening many activities can be done and many media can be used to provide students with listening activities in order to improve their listening abilities. One of the students‘ favorite activities is watching English Films. By watching English Films students are introduced to the real context of language and a wide range of vocabulary. After watching English Films students are assigned to make the English Films report. Since many people like watching English Films, assigning students to watch the English Films and make the report of what they have watched is expected to be more enjoyable. However they need to understand the English Films itself before they make their reports. They may watch the English Films twice or even more than twice to understand it, before they are able to make and present the English Films reports in the class. In these activities, the students have to watch and listen to the words, expressions, and sentences said by the characters. There are many advantages of these activities. By watching English Filmss students can learn the correct pronunciation, useful expressions from native speakers. Beside those activities, the students are also asked to write a synopsis of the English Films, find the meaning of useful expressions, understand the moral lesson of the English Filmss and present their own reports.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis penggunaan Campur Kode pada akun tiktok terpilih. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis campur kode yang ditemukan pada akun TikTok terpilih, mengetahui jenis yang paling dominan dan alasan penggunaan jenis campur kode yang paling dominan pada akun TikTok terpilih. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menggunakan teori Muysken ada tiga jenis campur kode yaitu insertion, Alternatin, dan Congruent Lexicalisation. Setelah menganalisis data, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa jenis campur kode yang paling dominan adalah Penyisipan dengan prosentase 52,4%, kemudian alternesi dengan prosentase 28,6% dan yang terakhir adalah leksikalisasi kongruen dengan prosentase 19%. Alasan jenis campur kode yang paling dominan pada akun tiktok yang dipilih adalah penyisipan karena bahasa Indonesia adalah bahasa ibu pemilik akun tiktok sehingga ketika mereka berbicara menggunakan campur kode mereka hanya memasukkan beberapa bahasa lain ke dalam kalimat, agar terlihat bergengsi karena pencampuran bahasa Inggris ketika seseorang berbicara bahasa Indonesia terlihat lebih keren dan menarik perhatian orang lain.

Abstract

This study deals with Psychological Personality of the Main Character in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. In analyzing the data, the writer applies two theoretical approaches, namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. In this thesis psychological discipline is applied to analyze personality in the novel. The Thesis applies qualitative descriptive where the focus of this analysis are to find out the kind of personality of the main character portrayed in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and the impact of the main character’s personality change. The result of this analysis shows that there are 4 (four) types of personality, they are Introvert Thinking Type, Introvert Feeling Type, Introvert Sensing Type, Introvert Intuiting Type which are possessed by the main character.

Abstract

Speaking is a very important skill in language proficiency. As a main skill to have in all languages, speaking is taught in various ways. Theoretically, pictures are a good media to be used to increase learners interest and sentence completion drills are good to make the teaching-learning activities to be fun. Based on the observation, in this teaching-learning activities, pictures are very good in enhance learners interest and focus while sentence completion drills are very good in turning the class to be fun and relax, sentence completion drills increase the interaction of teacher to learners and learners to learners. Moreover, sentence completion drills are very good to attract students starting either creating a conversation. The use of pictures and sentence completion drills are two very good combination in classroom in teaching-learning speaking.

Abstract

This study is to find out whether roundtable technique significantly affects for the students’ mastery of writing a descriptive text of eighth grade students at SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. Roundtable Technique is learning technique where the students take turn in their team by generating their responses, solving problems, or making a contribution to a project. It was conducted by using experimental quantitative research. The population of this study is the eighth grade students of junior high school SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. The writer takes 40 students as the sample and they are devided into two groups by using random sampling. The first group was VIII-1 as Experimental class which is taught by implementing Roundtable technique. While the second group is VIII-2 as control class which is taught by using conventional method. Oral test is used as the instrument of collecting the data. This test consists of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows t-observed that is 2.307 is higher than t-table that is 1.686 at the level significance (p: 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) 38. It means that Ha is accepted, therefore it is concluded that Roundtable technique significantly affect on students’mastery of writing a descriptive text of eleventh grade students at SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. It is suggested for the students of English department as source of valuable knowledge and information when conducting a research related to the study. It is also suggested that teachers of English subject should implement Roundtable technique as one of alternative in teaching Writing to increase students’ writing ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know whether there is a significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability at the Tenth Grade of SMK Negeri 1 Siborongborong. The sample of this study is 30 students taken from B class of six. The method used in this study was a quantitative method and the technique used in this study was a correlational technique. In collecting the data, the documentation of students‟ writing scores and the test of grammar are used. The scores of writing were collected from the learning Process of writing subject at Tenth Grade of SMK Negeri 1 Siborongborong. Besides, in assessing students‟ mastery of grammar, this study conducted multiple choice and error identification test to the students. The result of this study shows that there is a very low correlation between students‟ grammar mastery and writing ability. It is proved by the rxy (0.165) is lower than rtable in the degree of significance 5% (0.374) and 1% (0.478). It is considered that the null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected.

Abstract

Studi ini berjudul Pengaruh Stratifikasi Sosial Kasta Hindu dalam Novel Oka Rusmini. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui tindakan dan pengaruh stratifikasi sosial pada kasta Hindu. Teori yang digunakan adalah stratifikasi sosial dalamSosiologiSuatuPengantar oleh Soerjono Soekanto, dan teori kasta Sociology oleh Schaefer. Analisis ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dimana data dianalisis dalam bentuk kalimat dan kata-kata. Abstract

This is a review of reading comprehension theories from published articles. This theoretical review differs its content by showing reading complexities which is viewed from the perspective of its readers, text’s, and cognitive process. Readers individual differences are highly affect reading comprehension process as it can be also the source of its complexity by the factors of attitude, habit, and linguistics proficiency (Cassanave: 1988, Mcmaster: K.L., Espin, C.A., Van den Broek: 2014). On the other side, texts as the mediator of reader and writer interaction in reading process as also play an important factor in turning reading to be complex process, genre, content, format, and degree of difficulty are sub-factors that affect the complexity of reading in readers mind (Mcmaster, K.L., Espin, C.S., Van den broek; 2014). However, as the motor of reading process, cognitive activities are also play its important role started from decoding, translation, schemata, questioning, and metacognition process are closely affect reading comprehension process. As mainly composed from published article, this review focus to articles which are published on the year of 2000 and above but for a better result of reviews this theoretical review is taken Cassanave research result which was published on 1988 and Van den Broek research result which was published on 1999.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji masalah metafor yang ada dalam The Jakarta Post. Tujuan dari kajian ini untuk menggambarkan penggunaan metafor dalam surat kabar, mendapatkan jenis metafor yang paling dominan dalam surat kabar dan menjelaskan alasan kemunculan metafor. Data dalam kajian ini diambil dari kolom kriminalitas The Jakarta Post. Kajian menggunakan rancangan penelitian descriptive qualitative design. Hasil analisis menemukan bahwa semua jenis metafor muncul dalam kolom kriminalitas The Jakarta Post, walaupun kemunculan masing masing berbeda dalam jumlah. Adapun kemunculan dari jenis – jenis metafor adalah sebagai berikut:conceptual metaphorsebanyak 12 data (48%), ontological metaphorsebanyak 8 data (32%) danorientational metaphorsebanyak 5 data (20%). Jenisconceptual metaphoradalah jenis metafor yang paling dominan muncul dalamThe Jakarta Post. Alasan kemunculan conceptual metaphor yang paling dominan muncul adalah karena jenis metafor ini yang paling tepat dalam menyampaikan informasi tentang pelaku, tempat, dan waktu dalam kejadian kriminalitas.

Abstract

Community Language Learning disebut juga Counseling Learning, adalah salah satu contoh penerapan konsep psikoterapi dalam pengajaran bahasa. Konselor menjelaskan aktivitas apa yang diharapkan dan memberi waktu pada bimbingan untuk merefleksikan dirinya mengenai pengalamannya selama ini. Metode pengajaran bahasa menekankan pentingnya bentuk-bentuk bahasa, arti atau makna bahasa. Pengajaran bahasa dilakukan secara pendekatan yang disebut pendekatan humanistic. Pendekatan Humanistik dalam Pengajaran Bahasa melibatkan orang secara utuh, bukan sekedar sebagai sesuatu yang intelektual semata – mata. Ada beberapa hubungan yang diklasifikasikan berdasarkan faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi proses pembelajaran bahasa, mereka adalah rumah, komunitas, pekerjaan, sekolah, pertemuan agama, radio/televise, dan hal-hal bacaan.Tujuan pembelajaran bahasa adalah belajar bagaimana cara menggunakan bahasa untuk berkomunikasi. Komunitas sangat penting untuk pembelajaran dan pemeliharaan suatu bahasa. Bahasa yang menjadi target pembelajaran didalam kelas sangat berbeda dari cara belajar secara alami diluar kelas/ruangan. Kemungkinan peserta belajar bahasa tidak terlibat didalam kegiatan sosial dimana bahasa tersebut dipelajaridan digunakan. Bahasa yang dipelajari sebagai bahasa kedua; para pelajar benar – benar memanfaatkan bahasa dalam suasana dialam terbuka. Penggunaan bahasa dialam terbuka adalah salah satu faktor yang terpenting dalam penggunaan bahasa yang kita pelajari dalam komunikasi. Hasil yang dicapai sangat baik atau paling tidak memberikan harapan yang cerah dimasa depan.
