Abstract

This research aims at finding out modal auxiliaries found in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, their functions, and the most dominant modal auxilaries found there. This research was conducted by using qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were analyzed by applying some processes, they were: Identifying the data, Collecting the data from the novel, Analyzing and underlining the data related with the kinds and functions of modal auxiliaries. There are four modals that were analyzed based on their functions. Modal can can be used to show ability, possibility, permission and polite question. The function of possibility is dominantly used in Oliver Twist novel (40,96%). It is expected that the students of English Literature Department should have mastered the rules of the forms and functions of modal auxiliaries in writing their literary works because their literary works will be used by the language learners in their study, so they need to get the accepted materials, for example in this case, novel text.

Abstract

This qualitative research was done as an effort to analyze the major factor of the causes of low students’ ability in understanding the English language through listening skill. Whether the low used of media in Tourism Academy of ULCLA as the causes of low Students ability in listening skill. The population research and the sample was the 2020/2021 second grade students of Tourism Academy of ULCLA Tarutung with total 30 students and consists of Hospitality Major. Instrument with used of this research was to use media as audio-lingual to analyze the low students’ ability in studying listening skill. In the collecting data procedures, there are four steps that: Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. In the first data, the writer makes the exam material as research material to make simple conversation or with words that are often hear or even frequently used by student their daily lives. But after examination, the result of students’ paper only 25 % from the amount 30 Students. Of these, the writer concludes that the mastery and the skill of students to understanding listening is very low. This cause by the lack of the using of media supporting. After that and show of the value, the writer tries to make the exam about the different sound with the aim so that student knows the difference between native speaker with from their teacher or maybe daily conversation. So the second and the third result of the data at least increase, based the table become 35 % and in this section students acknowledge the different between native speaker pronunciation with subject teachers or the people around them influence practice hearing students. Until fifth test, we can see the percentage of the test of students is very low it means Unsatisfied. the analysis of the causes of low student’s skill in understanding the English language through listening skill are the lack of the using of audiolingual methods and the causes from external and internal of students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang Etika Kristendalam NovelRobinson Crusoe karya Daniel Defoe.Metode yang digunakan oleh penulis adalah metode kualitatif dihubungkan dengan pendekatan extrinsik dan intrinsik. Analisis ini menggunakan penelitian perpustakaan untuk mendapatkan sumber data. Hasil dari analisis menunjukan bahwa ada beberapa jenis Etika kristen dan pengaruh Etika kristen yang tergambar dalam novel Robinson Crusoe, yaitu Kasih dan Iman Kristiani dan pengaruhnya dalam ranah Pendidikan dan Peradaban.Dari hasil analisis, penulis menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman religius dari Robinson Crusoe dan caranya dalam mengajari seorang kanibal menjadi gambaran dari Etika Kristen karena Robinson Crusoe menyadari kehadiran Tuhan dalam setiap kondisi yang dihadapinya dan berkomitmen untuk mengabdikan hidupnya kepada Tuhan

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang Conceptual Metaphor in Katy Perry’s Song Lyrics (Metafora Konseptual dalam Lirik Lagu Katy Perry). Lagu-lagu Katy Perry dipilih sebagai sumber data karena dipastikan bahwa lirik-lirik lagu tersebut mengandung Metafora Konseptual. Analisisnya difokuskan pada jenis-jenis Metafora Konseptual, jenis Metafora Konseptual yang paling dominan dan alasan terjadinya jenis Metafora Konseptual yang dominan di dalam lirik lagu Katy Perry. Jenis Metafora Konseptual yang ditemukan dalam lagu-lagu tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Lakoff dan Johnson. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan menggunakan rancangan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada tiga (3) jenis Metafora Konseptual yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu Katy Perry, yaitu Metafora Struktural, Metafora Ontologikal dan Metafora Orientasional

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang mood dalam pidato joe biden dan bertujuan untuk menemukan Type of Mood dalam pidato Joe Biden berdasarkan teori M.A.K Halliday. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa ada 81 klausa dalam ucapan Joe Biden. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada 3 jenis suasana hati dalam ucapan Joe Biden. Diantaranya adalah 69 mood deklaratif dengan persentase 85%, 4 mood interogatif dengan persentase 5% dan 8 mood imperatif dengan persentase 10%. Dalam temuan ini, deklaratif sebagai jenis mood yang paling dominan digunakan dalam pidato Joe Biden artinya memberi atau menyampaikan pernyataan yang berupa informasi kepada pendengar.

Abstract

This thesis entitled is Moral Values ​​in Antoine De Saint Exupery's The Little Prince. This analysis is about the moral values ​​contained in the little prince character. In this thesis, the writer wants to show some of the moral values ​​that exist in the character of the little prince and show how the author describes each of the moral values ​​contained in the novella. To complete this analysis, the writer used Teori Pengkajian Fiksi by Nurgiyantoro,the writer also used qualitative research and conducts several analysis results on the library. As data analysis, the writer chose the novella The Little Prince (le petit prince) with the title Moral Values ​​in Antoine de saint exupery's The Little Prince. The results of this thesis, the writer found several moral values ​​namely responsibility, care, love and affection, politeness, friendship, loyalty, honestly and humility and the writerdescribe how the potrayed of moral values that have been found

Abstract

Artikel ini menganalisa jenis dari bahasa figuratif yang terdapat dalam puisi-puisi berbahasa Inggris (William Wordsworth). Selain itu, artikel ini juga akan mengemukakan jenis – jenis bahasa figurative dan jenis bahasa figuratif yang paling dominan serta tujuan dari Bahasa figurative yang digunakan. Artikel ini menggunakan metode descriptive qualitative dan quantitative. Hasil Analisa menunjukkan bahwa ada 8 (delapan) bahasa figuratif dalam 10 puisi yang dipilih (150 baris). Terdapat 93 data yaitu: Personification 19 data (20,43%), Assonance 18 data (19,39%). Simile 8 data (8,60%), Rhetorical Question 5 data (5,37%), Hyperbole 13 data (13,97%), Apostrophe 7 data (7,52%), Alliteration 13 data (13,97%), dan yang terakhir Synecdoche 10 data (10,75%). Dari jenis - jenis bahasa figuratif yang digunakan dalam puisi – puisi William Wordsworth ditemukan bahwa jenis bahasa figuratif, personification paling dominan digunakan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa personification digunakan untuk memperindah karya dalam penyampaian pesan dalam puisi - puisi William Wordsworth.

Abstract

In this study, the researcher analyzes taboo language phenomenon in a comic entitled My ID Is Gangnam Beauty especially on the kinds of taboo language used uttered by the characters with good academic background. The objectives of this research are to identify and describe the types of taboo language uttered by the characters of Maenggi Ki’s My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, to find out the most dominant types of taboo language of taboo language uttered by the characters in Maenggi Ki’s My ID Is Gangnam Beauty and to find out the reasons for the most dominant type of taboo language uttered by the characters in Maenggi Ki’s My Id Is Gangnam Beauty. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method based on Batistella (2005) theory and Wardhaugh (2006) theory. The technique of analyzing data are: classifying, analyzing, discussing and reporting. Based on the result on the analysis, there are four types of taboo language that found in My Id Is Gangnam Beauty: Ephitet, Obscenity, Profanity, and Vulgarity. The most dominant type is Ephitets type which are found one hundred six (106) times out of 84 episodes. There are 4 the functions that can be reasons of most dominant taboo language is occur that found in My ID Is Gangnam Beauty: To Draw Attention to Oneself, To Show Contempt, To be Provoke, To Mock Authority out of 84 episodes.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membicarakan tentang Fungsi Ujar dalam Artikel Gaya Hidup Majalah Cosmopolitan. Alasan penulis memilih artikel gaya hidup karena artikel-artikel tersebut berisi rekomendasi mengenai banyak produk yang ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Alasan memilih Fungsi Ujar adalah karena Fungsi Ujar digunakan banyak digunakan dalam tulisan dan alasan memilih majalah Cosmopolitan karena majalah tersebut menggunakan bahasa Inggris sehinnga penulis tidak perlu menerjemahkan artikel tersebut ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Masalah yang didiskusikan dalam penelitian ini adalah jenis Fungsi Ujar, Fungsi Ujar yang paling dominan dan alasan terjadinya jenis Fungsi Ujar yang paling dominan dalam artikel gaya hidup majalah Cosmopolitan. Penulis menggunakan teori Halliday untuk menganalisis data. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empat jenis funsi ujar dalam artikel gaya hidup majalah Cosmopolitan yang diterbitkan bulan April 2022; yaitu pernyataan, pertanyaan, penawaran, dan perintah.

Abstract

Skripsi ini membahas kepribadian tokoh utama dalam Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott. Analisis tesis ini difokuskan pada kepribadian tokoh utama Jo March. Masalah yang dikaji dalam tesis ini adalah Apa saja tipe-tipe kepribadian dan Apa tipe yang paling dominan dari kepribadian karakter utama dalam Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott, menurut teori Gerrard Heyman. Dalam menyelesaikan tugas akhir ini, penulis menerapkan metode kualitatif deskriptif penelitian kepustakaan agar mendapatkan kembali hasil yang sesuai dengan harapan penulis. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah: Tipe kepribadian yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama dalam Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott adalah: Gapasioneerden, Cholerici, Sentimental, dan Sanguinici. Jenis kepribadian yang paling dominan digunakan oleh tokoh utama dalam Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott adalah Cholerici.
