Abstract

Background: Dental caries is an infectious microbial disease that begins as demineralization of an inorganic portion of tooth, followed by the destruction of organic parts, leading to cavity formation. Fluoride helps to prevent caries which can be administered systematically or topically. Fluoride mouth rinse has been used in school program to prevent caries.Method: This article aim is to describe the effectiveness of school-based fluoride mouth rinse (S-FMR) as one of the effective methods to prevent caries on children.Discussion: The School-based Fluor Mouth Rinse (S-FMR) program or gargling using fluoride in schools is the use of fluoride as a mouth rinse for children aged 6-18 years conducted in the school environment. Several studies have shown that S-FMR can reduce the prevalence of caries. Conclusion: S-FMR is considered effective in preventing caries due to the simple method, cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, and easily undertaken by the teacher’s supervision

Abstract

Background: Dental radiographic examination is one of the most frequent radiological examinations carried out. X-rays in dental radiography is a shortwave electromagnetic rays that cause ionization reaction to any biological material in its path. The purpose of this article is to give an overview of stochastic effects in general as well as to pregnant women and fetuses in particular.Discussion: Ionizing radiation, such as X-ray radiation, is potentially teratogenic. Safe dose has not been well defined, although there has been approved dosing limits. Gestational age most vulnerable is the end of week 2 to A weeks post-conception. If the much needed radiographs of a woman who is pregnant, then the X-ray exposure will be directed mostly to the head and neck area.Conc/usion: Therefore, the application of the principle of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) as well as good protection, including instrument control, protection of the room, the cumulative exposure dose control, and the use of apron throughout the process, is noteworthy. Such protection, especially for pregnant women and fetuses.

Abstract

Background: Terpenoid isolate sarang semut (Myrmecodia pendans) is a natural material that has antibacterial power through the destruction of the cell membrane of Streptoccus mutans (S. mutans). Fructosiltransferase (ftf) is one of the extrapolisaccharides produced by S. mutans. The formation of Ftf is governed by the ftf gene. The aim of research was to know the correlation between terpenoid of Sarang semut administration with ftf mRNA expression of S. mutans biofilm ATCC 25175.Method: The study used mixed methods, namely descriptive explorative method to look at the isolation of ftf gene and ftf mRNA expression. This study began with making 1 day biofilm , then given terpenoid isolates of sarang semut and chlorhexidine. Next, isolation of ftf genes and ftf mRNA expression was carried out, then the differences in S. mutans ATCC 25175 mRNA ftf expression in sarang semut and chlorhexidine were given for 1 and 30 minutes using Real-Time PCR. Continued by looking at the relationship of the duration of administration of sarang semut terpenoids to the expression of S. mutans ATCC 25175 mRNA ftf biofilm. Statistical analysis used the t test with p-value <0.05 and Pearson. Results: The results showed that ftf gene with 130 bp length and ftf mRNA expression could be isolated from S. mutans biofilm ATCC 25175 which were given terpenoid isolates from sarang semut. The expression of sarang semut mRNA ftf and chlorhexidine did not have a significant difference for 1 minute (p = 0.0761), whereas in 30 minutes the ant nest had a higher mRNA expression (p = 0.0186). There is a relationship between the duration of administration of terpenoid isolates of sarang semut with S. mutans ATCC 25175 mRNA ftf expression (r2 = 0.614), with a medium correlation coefficient. Conclusion: The conclusion of the study were that sarang semut terpenoid had the same effect as chlorhexidine for 1 minute on S. mutans biofilms, whereas at 30 minutes it was different. There is a relationship between terpenoids of sarang semut isolates and S. mutans biofilm ATCC 25175 mRNA expression.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: The important role of coastal communities is not directly in line with their living conditions, which are mostly poor. Dental caries is basically a disease that is also suffered by the general public in Indonesia, even in the world. RISKESDAS 2018 shows the prevalence of caries in Indonesia is 88.8%. Dental caries is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans. People who live in coastal areas are at risk of suffering from dental caries. Brushing behavior also has a relationship with the incidence of dental caries. Method: All articles reviewed were obtained from Pubmed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with a period of 10 years in full text. using the keywords behavior, caries, and coastal area.Result: Based on reviews from several journals, it was found that the brushing behavior of coastal communities was good, but the frequency of brushing teeth was not appropriate and the behavior of using drinking water had no known fluoride content. There are variations in the category of dental caries at the age level of people in coastal areas. Conclusion: Knowledge and healthy behavior can reduce the risk of dental caries related to the behavior of coastal communities, so that life productivity can be much better than ever.

Abstract

Background: Improving the aesthetic needs of patients is followed by various improvement and development of aesthetic dentistry products. The aesthetic demand drives the patients to choose the type of restoration which has superiority on its aesthetic properties that is nanofller composite resin. This demand also causes the patients prefer to use whitening toothpaste which its abrasive materials allegedly cause surface roughness. Surface roughness of the restoration is one of the important factors that affect the durability of the restoration. High surface roughness causes the retention of plaque and dicoloration that will ultimately affect the aesthetic of the restoration itself. Objective: To determine the increase of surface roughness nanofller composite resin restorations after brushing with toothpaste whitening and non-whitening.Methods: 21 samples of nanofller composite resin, divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (control) brushed with distilled water, group 2 brushed with mixture of distilled water and whitening toothpaste, and group 3 brushed using mixture of distilled water and non-whitening toothpaste. Each group was brushed with a time of 30 seconds per day for two weeks (14 days). The measurements of surface roughness were taken before and after the samples were brushed. Results: There were an increase in the surface roughness of each groupafter brushing. The result showed that the highest value of increased surface roughness occured in group 2 (whitening toothpaste), while the lowest value occured in group 1 (control). There are also signifcant differences between the value of the increased surface roughness nanofller composite resin in each group. Conclusions: The increase of surface roughness of nanofller composite resin after brushing with a whitening toothpaste was higher than brushing with non whitening toothpaste

Abstract

Introduction: Traumatized immature permanent teeth can cause pulp necrosis, leading to imperfect root formation, and thus resulting an open apex. The apical opening of the immature teeth is mostly large and thus may lead to difficulties in performing a root filling. In such cases, apexification is mandatory before doing root canal treatment. The aim of this case report was to inform that apexification and direct veneer was suitable to treat Ellis class IV fracture with necrotic pulpCase Report: 21-year-old female came to the Dental Conservation Clinic RSGM Prof. Soedomo Faculty of Dentistry UGM with chief complaint of right central incisive maxilla fracture and tooth discoloration. Radiographic examination showed an open apex of tooth 11 with a diffuse apical radiolucent area. Root canal treatment and apexification were carried out using circumferential technique and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). Vertical warm obturation was performed, followed by intra coronal bleaching in the next visit. Final restoration was carried out using direct composite veneer. Post treatment radiographic showed a 1 mm diameter of radiolucent area at the apex in a good healing process. Conclusion: Apexification using MTA can be used to treat an open apex tooth. 1Student of Specialist Programme in Conservative Dentistry, Dentistry Faculty, Gadjah Mada University 2Department of Conservative Dentistry, Dentistry Faculty, Gadjah Mada University
