Abstract

The performance of education in Indonesia was highlighted in the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) report, particularly in mathematics, where Indonesian students ranked 72nd out of 78 countries with an average score of 379, significantly below the average set by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) institutions. This underscores the urgent need to address the low mathematical reasoning abilities among Indonesian students. The aim of this research is to develop teaching materials based on Local Instruction Theory (LIT) using the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. These materials are designed to meet the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness, with the goal of enhancing students' mathematical reasoning abilities. The method used in here is design research with the ADDIE model consist of five stage: analyze, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In the first stage, we analyzed learning objectives, student characteristics, and required resources. Next, in the design stage, we developed the LIT and learning trajectories for the topic of Relations and Functions. During the development stage, we develop LIT-based teaching materials using the RME approach and conducted instrument testing to analyze the validity of the mathematical reasoning ability test instrument. At the implementation stage, the developed teaching materials were applied in the classroom. Finally, at the evaluation stage, we analyzed the research results. The research subjects were students from SMP N 2 Way Seputih, with class VIII-4 as the experimental class and class VIII-5 as the control class. The practicality of the teaching materials was rated very practical by both validators (0.77) and students (0.82). The average N-Gain score for the experimental class was higher (0.72) compared to the control class (0.67), indicating that the developed teaching materials were more effective in improving students' mathematical reasoning abilities.

Abstract

Mathematical problem solving strategy is a method used in the problem solving process to find solutions to mathematical problems. Cognitive styles that are classified based on how to choose a problem solving strategy are field dependent and field independent cognitive styles. The use of various strategies can be seen in the application of mathematical problems. To find out the strategy of solving math problems, indicators can be shown about various strategies for solving math problems, they are: (1) working backward; (2) look for pattern; (3) adopting a different point of view; (4) solving a simpler analogous problem; (5) draw a picture and model; (6) guess and check; (7) organizing data; (8) logical reasoning; and (9) write an equation. The purpose of this study was to describe the math problem solving strategies of students with field dependent and field independent cognitive styles. This research is included in qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this study were two students with field dependent and field independent cognitive styles who had been taught quadrilateral and triangle material. This study uses instruments in the form of GEFT tests, math ability tests, problem solving tasks, and interview guidelines. The data obtained were then analyzed by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that, 1) students with field dependent cognitive style in solving mathematical problems using the strategy of logical reasoning, working backwards, write an equation and organizing data. 2) Students with field independent cognitive style in solving math problems using the strategy of adopting a different point of view, look for pattern, doing logical reasoning, write an equation, draw a picture and model, and guess and check. Problem solving strategies used by FI students are more varied than FD students.

Abstract

The Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) has a role in constructing potential learning paths for students based on their thinking. It includes learning objectives, learning activities, and learning hypotheses to help students reach the desired endpoint. Therefore, this research aims to produce a learning trajectory for algebraic multiplication using the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. The method used is design research, consisting of three stages: Preparing for the Experiment, Design Experiment, and Retrospective Analysis. The HLT design was tested on 6 participants selected based on the lowest scores on a pre-test. This research was conducted up to the pilot experiment stage with five activities aimed at learning objectives, including the multiplication of forms or for activity 1, the multiplication of forms for activity 2, the multiplication of forms or for activity 3, the multiplication of forms or for activity 4, and the multiplication of forms for activity 5. Video recordings, field notes, documentation of student work, and pre-test and post-test data were collected in this study. The results of this study indicate that HLT design 1, which emerged from the design implementation, can help students learn algebraic multiplication. Meaningful contexts for students, combined with questions posed by the teacher, encourage students to think about the mathematical ideas discussed, thereby generating different strategies for solving given problems. Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe junior high school students' critical thinking skills in solving congruence problems based on mathematical abilities. Critical thinking skills are a person's cognitive process in interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, inferring, explaining and self-regulating in the process of making reflective and focused judgments. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research took place at As - Syafiah Loceret Islamic Middle School, Nganjuk. Subjects were selected based on their level of mathematical ability, namely one student each with high, medium and low mathematical ability. Researchers act as the main instrument and data collector. Data collection techniques using mathematics ability tests, mathematics assignments, and semi-structured interviews. The research results showed that junior high school students in solving congruence problems demonstrated interpretation skills: categorization and decoding; analytical skills: examination of ideas, identification of arguments and analysis of arguments; evaluation skills : claim assessment and argument assessment; inference skills: questioning claims, alternative thinking and drawing conclusions, explanation skills: presentation of problems, justification of procedures and articulation of arguments, self-regulation skills: self-research. Students' critical thinking skills appear optimally in students with high mathematical abilities as evidenced by the emergence of all sub-indicators of critical thinking skills, less so in students with moderate mathematical abilities as evidenced by less than optimal identification of arguments for certain questions and the absence of alternative thinking for the mathematical tasks presented. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical abilities find it difficult so that their analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation and self-regulation skills are not perfect.

Abstract

E-comic mathematics is a comic-shaped learning supplement whose creation and use process utilizes technological media. The use of e-comic as a learning supplement is intended to assist students in learning the concept of a mathematical material independently outside of classroom learning activities. Realistic mathematics approach (PMR) is a learning theory in mathematics education that connects mathematics with real life and human activities. Linear equation of one variable (PLSV) is a mathematics material in grade VII. The definition of PLSV is an equation that has only one variable with the highest rank of degree one. This study aims to describe the process and results of the development of PMR-based math e-comic on PLSV material which is measured through aspects of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The subjects in this study were seventh grade students who had received algebraic arithmetic operation material. This research is a development research using ADDIE development model with five phases namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data collection methods in this study are: validation by experts, one-to-one trials, and field tests. The results showed that the math e-comic met the criteria of being very valid with an average percentage value from the validator of 91.15%. The results of the user response questionnaire in the field test showed an average percentage value of 82.5% and met the practical criteria. In addition, there was an increase in student learning outcomes in the pretest and post-test indicated by the acquisition of an N-Gain value of 0.7 with a moderate upper limit category during the field test, thus meeting the effective criteria. Based on the evaluation results, it shows that the PMR-based math e-comic on PLSV material developed has met the valid, practical, and effective criteria.
