Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and functions of the linguistic signs in the linguistic landscape of Semarang's Chinatown, an area that represents the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Chinese community in Indonesia. The research focuses on identifying the forms of linguistic signs found in public spaces as cultural artifacts and analyzing their functions within the local social, economic, and cultural context. The data consists of linguistic signs on shop signs, banners, religious plaques, and directional signs, collected through field observation and photo documentation from August to October 2025. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, visualization, and interviews with temple administrators and local residents. The results indicate that the variation in the forms of linguistic signs includes monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual signs combining Indonesian, Mandarin, Hokkien, and Javanese. The functions of the linguistic signs are not only informational and commercial but also reflect strong cultural identity, symbolic, and religious functions, especially around the temple. These findings confirm that the linguistic landscape serves as a medium for representing Chinese ethnic identity as well as a space for socio-economic interaction in this heritage area. Validation was carried out through technique triangulation with expert interviews to ensure the accuracy of the analyzed forms and functions of the linguistic signs in the Semarang Chinatown area.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the discourse and meanings of acts of self-destruction as representations of resistance to oppressive stereotypes imposed on female characters in the short story compilation Sagra. The study employs a social constructivist approach in literary studies to explore the correlation between the discourse and meaning in actions that challenge stereotypes of women. The focus of this research is the discourse of resistance to socially constructed stereotypes of women, particularly those related to women’s bodies. These stereotypes are manifested through acts of self-destruction that are directly connected to women’s bodies. The study adopts a qualitative research design using literary analysis methods. Library research and close reading methods, supported by systematic note-taking techniques, are used to identify the relationship between discourse and the meanings of acts of self-destruction as forms of resistance to stereotypes. The analysis is grounded in Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis and Mead’s theory of Symbolic Interactionism. The findings indicate that acts of self-destruction performed by female characters are not expressions of despair or surrender to oppression, but rather function as coping mechanisms to assert ownership over their bodies. These acts are interpreted both literally and metaphorically, particularly in relation to self-actualization. Ultimately, the contribution of this research is to offer a new perspective on the discourse of women’s self-destruction within the context of patriarchy. Rather than interpreting self-destruction as a form of despair, this act can be understood as a form of resistance that voices women’s rights over the ownership of their own bodies.

Abstract

The study investigates the accuracy of students’ translations of descriptive texts assisted by DeepL Translate and students’ perception toward the use of this translation tool in translation learning. The presence of machine translation tools in academic contexts has raised concerns regarding translation quality and students' overreliance on automated systems. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved 32 undergraduate students of English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data were collected through translation tasks consisting of three descriptive texts and a perception questionnaire. Students’ translation accuracy was measured using Nababan translation quality assessment model, while students' perceptions were examined across four aspects: attractiveness, relevance, perceived usefulness, and perceived motivation. The findings show that students achieved the highest translation accuracy in texts with explicit meanings and simple sentence structures (mean score 2.75), while accuracy declined in texts containing figurative language, abstract expressions, and longer sentence constructions (mean scores 2.48 and 2.44). The overall mean score of translation accuracy was 2.55, categorized as accurate. The questionnaire results reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions toward the use of DeepL Translate, with an overall mean score of 3.02, particularly regarding its relevance (3.20) and attractiveness (3.17). However, positive perceptions were not consistently aligned with high translation accuracy. These findings suggest that although DeepL Translate can support translation learning, students’ still need strong linguistic competence and post-editing skill to ensure accurate translation outcomes.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study with song lyrics and audio-visual activities in music videos as codes for the object of research. The observation method is conducted to collect the research object which is further analyzed based on semiotic studies by applying Umberto Eco's theory. This study aims to classify the code and describe the relationship between content and expression in the code in order to understand the intentions of the songwriters represented through the embodiment of Malay culture. The result shows songs lyrics, music, traditional customs, nature, traditional house, and accessories as a code containing content and expression to represent Malay culture. The connection between content and expression found in this research shows difficilis ratio which requires encyclopedia and understanding to understand the the intentions of the songwriters

Abstract

Language learning anxiety poses a significant challenge in Indonesian education; however, traditional methods frequently neglect its neurophysiological foundations. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate learning anxiety through EEG-based brainwave monitoring. This review study examines how EEG assessments identify specific brainwave types, brain regions, and treatments for learning anxiety. A systematic literature review (SLR) approach adhered to PRISMA guidelines. The flow diagram results indicate that out of 250 articles identified from Scopus-indexed journals, 140 passed the initial screening stage, 90 were selected for further review, and only 30 met the inclusion criteria. These articles were categorized into three main themes: brainwave types, brain regions, and EEG treatment for anxiety. The findings indicated that EEG studies consistently and accurately detect learning anxiety through increased beta wave activity and decreased alpha and theta wave activity, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, which is linked to cognitive stress and emotional regulation dysfunction. Additionally, significant brain activation was observed in the frontal, prefrontal, parietal, and temporal regions, as well as in the limbic system. EEG-based interventions, such as neurofeedback and vagus nerve stimulation, were also found to be effective in reducing anxiety through non-pharmacological means. However, current research is still limited to experimental studies conducted in laboratory settings, which do not fully capture the dynamic nature of learning anxiety in real classroom contexts for better input of teaching strategies. Future studies should aim to integrate EEG with other affective factors and test the effectiveness of neuroscience-based interventions in authentic and sustainable learning environments.
