Abstract

This study investigates the characteristics of women’s language in market bargaining, revealing how specific communicative features affect buying and selling interactions. These features include the use of polite and non-confrontational language forms, such as hedges and tag questions, which reflect a desire to maintain harmonious social relations. Drawing on Robin Lakoff’s (1975) theory, the study examines how features like hedges, tag questions, and super polite forms are employed by female sellers and buyers during market interactions. The research methods include direct observation and conversation analysis to identify the frequency and context of these language features. The findings indicate that the use of female language traits not only influences the nature of bargaining but also contributes to establishing and maintaining positive social relationships between sellers and buyers. These insights enhance our understanding of communication strategies in economic contexts and underscore the importance of recognizing gender-specific linguistic features in everyday social interactions. Furthermore, the research suggests that a deeper understanding of women’s language traits can provide practical benefits for market participants, aiding in the improvement of their negotiation and marketing skills

Abstract

The existence of Jangér in Banjar Kedaton remains well-preserved to this day. The Jangér songs in Banjar Kedaton, Desa Adat Sumerta, possess distinctive characteristics, values, and unique qualities in both their melodies and performances. Despite various training methods being employed for Jangér songs, their effectiveness has been found lacking. Consequently, trainers have concluded that the Direct Method is the most effective teaching approach. This study addresses three research questions: (1) the application of the Direct Method in teaching sekar raré for Jangér performances, (2) the challenges encountered when implementing this method, and (3) strategies to overcome these challenges. The aim of this research is to provide insights to dancers, trainers, researchers, and government institutions about the Direct Method. Using a qualitative approach and the theories of Behaviorism and Constructivism, this study finds that the application of the Direct Method faces obstacles such as the availability of trainers, dancers' skills, and training time. Mention the Proposed solutions, among others include encouraging dancers to practice Jangér songs more at home.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the translation forms of first-person pronouns used as the subject and object from English into Indonesian. This research is descriptive-comparative with a qualitative approach, which explores the nature of first-person pronouns in two novels. The problem of this research is how the equivalent forms are found in translating first-person pronouns from English into Indonesian in the novel “Murder on the Orients Express”. The results show that there are 155 first-person pronouns in the English novel, indicating that the translation of these pronouns, “I” can be aku, ku- kami, and saya, “me” can be kita and sayalah, “we” can be kereta, kami, and kita, and “us” can be kita and kemari. The differences in translation results are due to the different pronoun systems. English does not have an inclusive and exclusive system for “we”, while Indonesian does not have the first-person pronouns in terms of subjects and objects.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the basic clause structure in Sikka and identify the syntactic implications of the basic clause structure in Sikka. The primary data of the study were obtained from fieldwork interviews with two Sikka native speakers in Koting C village and Kokowahor village, online correspondence with one Sikka speaker, and introspection. The secondary data was taken from written texts in Sikka. The data were analyzed using transitivity alternation and work order pattern as the primary theoretical framework in this study. The result shows that Sikka has three types of basic clause structures distinguished by verb type (transitivity) and the number of core arguments involved in a clause (valency). The first basic clause type in Sikka is the intransitive clause (IC). ICs are clauses with one core argument (S). The second type is the transitive clause (TC). TC is a clause with two core arguments (A and O). The third type is the ditransitive clause (DC), which has three core arguments (A, PO, and SO. The predicate in DC can be a typical ditransitive verb or a serial verb construction (SVC). The results of basic clause structure identification in Sikka shed light on typological claims such as voice alternation and valency-changing mechanisms that distinguish languages in Eastern Indonesia from languages in Western Indonesia.

Abstract

The representamen of Pepsi advertisements' logo comprises a circular shape in red, blue, and white, adorned with curved lines. Nevertheless, the interpretant derived from this logo is not always transparent or consistent, owing to the diverse perspectives, experiences, cultures, and contexts of individuals. Hence, this study investigated the semiotic meaning encapsulated within the Pepsi logo from a cultural standpoint. This study employed a qualitative interpretative approach to grasp the significance and contextual implications embedded within these visuals. Pepsi’s logos from different decades were observed, including the use of colour, shapes, and selections of words. The data were analysed using Peirce's semiotic theory. The findings revealed that the form, function, and meaning of the Pepsi logo were decoded through ten distinct types of sign vehicles, their objects, and interpretants. However, a majority of these interpretations were culturally conventional. The choice of vertical or horizontal arrangement of the PEPSI typography, colors, and lines was interpreted as representative of a cultural system encompassing both individualism and collectivism. Although there seems to be a lack of an iconic relationship with the represented object and an imbalance between consistent representamen and varied interpretants, the semiotic analysis research conducted on the Pepsi logo holds positive implications for the advancement of linguistics and effective marketing strategies.

Abstract

This study analyses the effectiveness of gastronomy in fostering cultural awareness among UNSOED students, emphasizing how food can serve as a bridge to cultural understanding. This study was conducted in five different classes with a total of 150 students from Fakultas Ilmu Budaya and Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Politik UNSOED. This study uses a qualitative experiential approach with a focus on interactive and practical learning. Students participate in gastronomy practices where they bring traditional foods from local and international cultures (e.g., mendoan, sandwiches, and baguettes), followed by tasting and discussion sessions. Data were collected through observation and reflective feedback from students to assess the impact of gastronomy experiences on the development of cultural awareness. This study found that tasting various foods significantly increased students' understanding of various cultural values and practices. In addition, this approach is in line with the objectives of the MBKM program, which emphasizes flexibility and real-world learning experiences. Gastronomy, as demonstrated in this study, has proven to be a practical and effective tool in fostering cultural awareness in students. By connecting food traditions to cultural history and social practices, students not only learn about different cultures but also develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. The findings indicate that direct engagement with gastronomy significantly enhances students’ cultural awareness by providing an immersive learning experience. The study reveals that experiential learning through gastronomy fosters open-mindedness, appreciation for diversity, and critical thinking regarding cultural differences. This research contributes to the field of cultural education by demonstrating the effectiveness of gastronomy as an educational tool. It highlights the potential integration of culinary-based cultural education into university curricula, providing a model that can be adapted in other educational institutions

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of conjunctions in Indonesian compound sentences based on their types and syntactic functions. The data source for this research was obtained from various linguistic references, particularly Tata Bahasa Baku Bahasa Indonesia (The Standard Grammar of Indonesian) Fourth Edition (2017), as well as other supporting literature discussing conjunctions in the Indonesian language. Data collection was conducted through a literature review using observation and note-taking techniques, where all identified conjunctions were classified based on their types and functions in clause relationships. The collected data were then analyzed using a descriptive-synchronic method with a syntactic classification approach to determine the usage patterns of conjunctions in compound sentences. The results of the study indicate that Indonesian has 110 conjunctions, which can be categorized into four main types: (1) coordinating conjunctions, which connect equivalent elements within a sentence; (2) correlative conjunctions, which link two elements with the same syntactic structure; (3) subordinating conjunctions, which connect a main clause with a subordinate clause in a hierarchical relationship; and (4) inter-sentential conjunctions, which logically connect two sentences within a discourse. Further analysis reveals that the appropriate use of conjunctions significantly influences the clarity of meaning and logical structure in compound sentences.
