Abstract

This article delves into the linguistic and discursive aspects of communication, exploring the application of theories proposed by J.L. Austin (1975) and John Searle (1969) to understand the illocutionary acts employed by the male and female judges in Indonesia's Next Top Model. Within the context of reality television, where judgments and critiques are integral components, the language used by judges holds particular significance. This study aims to delve into the illocutionary acts employed by male and female judges in the popular television show "Indonesia's Next Top Model Cycle 3." The research method for this study employed a qualitative research approach, involved describing data from real-life situations or phenomena in their natural context within the reality show to explore the nuances and meanings of illocutionary acts in judges' comments. A sample of episodes from Indonesia's Next Top Model Cycle 3 was selected for analysis, ensuring representation of both male and female judges' comments. The dataset consisted of 266 utterances, 132 utterances from male judges' comments and 134 utterances from female judges' comments. In this study, it is found that the female judges had a greater variety of speech acts where they used all types of speech acts when giving comments. Whereas male judges only used three types of speech acts. The most dominant type of speech act of both male and female judges is assertives/representatives. It is inferred that both male and female judges are having or showing a confident and forceful personality in their utterances. In this study, it can also be seen that female judges are more to the point or overt than male judges.

Abstract

This paper exposes the crucial points of self-determination in the flash fiction of James Baldwin entitled Bruce and the Spider. The short story is a narrative that describes a brief moment in the life of the main character, Bruce, a Scottish king who was defeated many times by the King of England. When he saw a spider weaving its web in the corner of his retreat, this moment became symbolic of Bruce's emotional journey and self-determination within himself and the kingdom of Scotland. In this flash fiction, it is witnessed how Bruce struggles amid his repeated failures. Using qualitative research method, this article illustrates small changes in perception and courage and asks questions about how simple moments can have a profound impact on a person's life. This writing is supported by Self-Determination Theory as conceptualized by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci. Through explorative approach, the analysis includes how self-determination accompanies the reflections of the meanings behind simple actions and the importance of facing failure. In conclusion, it is self-determination through self-confidence, self-understanding, and self-reliance that directs King Bruce to defeat his despair, get back up, and beat back the English soldiers.

Abstract

The surge in research addressing code-switching (CS) and code-mixing (CM) occurrences between English and Indonesian languages within podcasts has garnered significant attention.. Nonetheless, the comparative analysis of the structure, categories, and purpose of employing these linguistic blends, along with the audience's interpretations of such bilingual variations, remains somewhat limited. Consequently, the present study endeavors to contrast the distinct manifestations of CS and CM exhibited by Deddy Corbuzier and Cinta Laura, as perceived by participants. The study employed a qualitative approach where the data was analyzed with content analysis. Concurrently, participants' viewpoints regarding CS and CM were elicited through questionnaires distributed among a purposive sample of 20 individuals selected from a population of 200. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The findings of this research indicate Cinta Laura employed a greater degree of CS and CM in comparison to Deddy Corbuzier in the podcasts due to her fluency in both languages and her speech mostly indicated her social status and addressed topics of conversation. Meanwhile, Dedy Corbuzier used the variation to demonstrate solidarity and persuade the audience. The paired sample t-test revealed a significant divergence in participants' perceptions of code-switching and code-mixing between Deddy Corbuzier and Cinta Laura.

Abstract

This study aims to identify conceptual metaphors about education on the social media platform X, as well as the types of metaphors that emerge from observing the phenomenon of educational development in Indonesia, which prompts people to express their emotions on Twitter. Because the use of conceptual metaphors likely occurs unintentionally, resulting in diverse forms, this study seeks to explore the relationship between the source domain and the target domain in metaphorical expressions unintentionally produced by individuals about education. The data in this study is qualitative; data collection was done by documenting and observing data on the social media platform X, aided by note-taking techniques to record the data found, which was then analyzed using the conceptual metaphor theory of Kovecses (2006), which divides metaphors into three types: structural, orientational, and ontological. The study's results show the forms of conceptual metaphors found include education as a place, education as wealth, good as up, bad as down, and education as an entity.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the symbolic meaning of pupuh pucung entitled 'Bibi Anu' which is used as an accompaniment to nelu bulanin rituals. The data were taken from a video of the Nelu Bulanin ceremony from YouTube with the address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTNtDppLjc0. The data were collected by applying the observation method through watching the video, transcribing the lyrics, reading, and note-taking the words or phrases that contain symbolic meaning. There were five stanzas of pupuh pucung used as data sources. This research used a qualitative approach. The analysis was carried out by applying the cultural-linguistic theory proposed by Palmer (1996). This research shows that the lyrics of 'Bibi Anu' use linguistic units like words and phrases with symbolic meaning as a means of expressing the beliefs of Balinese Hindu society. This research has proven that Pupuh Pucung ‘Bibi Anu’ not only accompanies the ritual but is an inseparable part of the ritual itself because the lyrics contain belief values as an inseparable part of Balinese culture.
