Abstract

Papaya Carica papaya L. is a fruit commodity that has many functions and benefits as cooking, sweets, medicine, snacks. Secondary metabolite compounds found in Carica papaya L. papaya are flavonoids, polyphenols, quinones and tannins. It is known that falvonoid compounds can have antibacterial properties. In this research, it is hoped that papaya leaf stalk extract can act as an antimicrobial so that it can be used as first aid for diseases caused by E. coli bacteria. This research used ingredients from 500 grams of papaya leaf stalk extract which had been macerated using 96% ethanol, to produce a thick extract. The thick extract was tested on NA growth media using E. coli bacteria. In this study, the clear zone produced at a concentration of 50% was 7 mm, at a concentration of 25% it produced a clear zone of 6 mm and at a concentration of 12.5% it did not produce a clear zone.

Abstract

The Miana Coleus atropurpereus plant is a unique plant because it has so many varieties. The differences in these varieties can be seen from the very diverse differences in leaf color. Several studies have known about the active antimicrobial compounds of Coleus atropurpereus miana leaves, namely in the form of flavonoids, saponins, steroids, tannins, essential oils, eugenol, polyphenolic compounds, alkaloids, ethyl salicylate, calcium oxalate, rosmarinic acid compounds. In this study, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were used using thick extracts that had been macerated using 96% alcohol. in this study it showed 8 mm at a concentration of 50%, at a concentration of 25% it showed a clear zone of 7 mm and at a concentration of 12.5% it showed 6 mm. It can be concluded that the extract of Coleus atropurpereus miana leaves is weakly toxic to E. coli and not toxic to S. aureus bacteria..

Abstract

Abstract

The prevalence of myopia is increasing, especially among students, along with the increasing use of gadgets. This study aims to measure the prevalence of myopia and identify the relationship between the duration of gadget use and the incidence of myopia among students of Ma Chung University Malang in July 2023. This study design uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional method, involving 125 students aged 17–24 years who were selected using convenience sampling techniques. The research instruments were questionnaires and direct eye examinations. Data analysis used a simple linear regression test to see the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The results showed that 96.8% of respondents used gadgets for more than 2 hours per day and 58.4% of them experienced symptoms of myopia. Factors such as visual habits and outdoor activities moderate the relationship between the duration of gadget use and the incidence of myopia. This study confirms that unhealthy gadget usage habits increase the risk of myopia. Education is needed regarding good visual habits and increased activity.

Abstract

Refractive errors occur when the light entering the eye is not clearly focused, causing blurry or unsharp vision. The main causes of refractive errors include hereditary factors and an unhealthy lifestyle. Signs and symptoms of refractive errors include blurred vision, frequent squinting to see objects clearly, and difficulty focusing when reading, watching TV, or looking at a gadget screen. This disorder cannot be completely cured, but it can be helped with glasses, contact lenses, or lasik surgery. The urgency of this research is driven by the increasing duration of gadget use among Ma Chung University students in June 2023 and its impact on eye refractive errors. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the duration of gadget use on refractive errors in students. The targeted output is empirical data on the relationship between the duration of gadget use and the incidence of refractive errors, which can be the basis for eye health interventions among students.

This study aims to determine the prevalence of refractive errors in children with Down Syndrome in eye examination activities carried out during Down Syndrome Awareness Month 2023 by the East Java Association of Parents of Children with Down Syndrome (PIK POTADS). A total of 30 children with Down Syndrome underwent eye examinations, and the results showed that 18 children (72%) had myopia, 7 children (28%) had astigmatism, and 5 children were indicated to require further referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist. These results indicate that children with Down Syndrome have a high risk of experiencing refractive errors, so regular eye examinations and medical follow-up are needed.

Abstract

Astigmatism is a refractive disorder caused by uneven curvature of the cornea or lens, causing light not to focus on the retina. This study aims to measure the prevalence of astigmatism among students at Ma Chung University and identify the relationship between the duration and position of gadget use with astigmatism. The study method used a cross-sectional design involving 125 students aged 17–24 years. Data were collected through questionnaires and eye examinations using a Snellen chart and keratometer. The results showed that 38.4% of students had astigmatism. Most students (96.8%) used gadgets for more than 2 hours a day, and 91.2% used gadgets in a lying position. Using gadgets in this position and for long durations increases the risk of astigmatism. The conclusion of this study is that astigmatism is a significant problem among students. Implementation of the 20-20-20 rule and increasing outdoor activities are recommended for prevention. Routine eye examinations are also needed so that disorders can be detected and treated early.
