Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease that is a global health problem and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2021 shows that Indonesia ranks fifth in the world for the number of diabetes sufferers. Diabetes prevention can be achieved through promotive and preventive interventions, one of which is providing community outreach and education. This Community Service (CSP) activity aims to increase public knowledge and awareness about the importance of diabetes prevention through a healthy lifestyle, early detection, and risk factor management. The activity method included interactive lectures, question-and-answer discussions, and the distribution of educational leaflets to 50 participants, consisting of productive-age and elderly residents in the activity area. Knowledge evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-tests. The results of the activity showed a 50% increase in participants' knowledge (from an average of 30% before the outreach to 80% after the outreach). Furthermore, participants demonstrated a high level of interest in adopting a healthy diet, regular exercise, and regular blood sugar checks. This activity successfully increased community understanding of diabetes prevention and can be developed into a sustainable program integrated with community health center programs and health cadres in the area.

Abstract

The development of information technology (IT) has had a significant impact on the healthcare sector, particularly in hospital management and planning. Good planning requires accurate, systematic, and easily accessible data so that hospitals can provide quality, efficient services that meet patient needs. However, many hospitals in Indonesia, including those in Makassar, still face challenges in IT implementation, ranging from limited infrastructure, lack of human resource training, and resistance to system change. This community service activity was held on Juni 11, 2025, in Makassar, with the aim of improving the understanding, skills, and readiness of hospital management in implementing information technology in planning systems. The methods used included counseling, technical training, mentoring, and simulations of hospital management software usage. The activity results showed a 75% increase in participant knowledge based on pre- and post-test evaluations. Participants understood basic IT concepts, were able to run simulations of logistics planning and service scheduling, and demonstrated a commitment to integrating technology into hospital operations. This activity demonstrates that strengthening human resource capacity and infrastructure support can accelerate digital transformation in hospitals, thereby improving the quality of healthcare services.

Abstract

Abortion, or spontaneous miscarriage, is a reproductive health problem that continues to contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in rural areas with limited access to health services. Early detection of abortion risk is crucial to prevent serious complications in pregnant women. Health cadres, as extensions of medical personnel in the community, have great potential in providing education and early detection of abortion symptoms. This community service program aims to increase the capacity of health cadres in Village Y to detect abortion risk early through training, simulations, and outreach. The activities were conducted using a participatory and evaluative approach. The results showed a significant increase in cadres' understanding of risk factors, early symptoms, and referral procedures for abortion cases. This program is expected to become a model for cadre empowerment in promotive and preventive efforts for maternal health issues at the village level.

Abstract

Incomplete abortion is a common first-trimester pregnancy complication encountered in obstetric emergency departments and requires immediate treatment to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality. Inappropriate management can increase the risk of infection, severe bleeding, and even future fertility problems. This community service activity aims to evaluate the management of incomplete abortion at Hospital Y through a retrospective study of patient medical records over the past five years (2019–2023). The methods used included secondary data collection from the medical records of patients with incomplete abortion, descriptive analysis of the types of medical procedures provided, treatment time, complications, and compliance with hospital standard operating procedures (SOPs) and WHO guidelines. The evaluation results showed that 85% of management met standards, with curettage (63%) the most common procedure, followed by misoprostol administration and observation. The main obstacles identified were delays in treatment for referred patients and insufficient documentation on patient education sheets. This activity provided important input for hospitals to improve service quality, such as retraining healthcare workers, enhancing medical information systems, and strengthening referrals between facilities. It is hoped that this evaluation can inform policy improvements to the management of incomplete abortion cases at the hospital and regional levels.

Abstract

The background to this activity stems from the high prevalence of over-the-counter use of traditional medicines among pregnant women, particularly in rural areas, without adequate understanding of their side effects on pregnancy. One serious risk of using traditional medicines without a prescription is abortion or miscarriage, which can be caused by the presence of certain active compounds in unstandardized herbal concoctions. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase pregnant women's knowledge about the dangers of using traditional medicines without medical consultation and to educate them about the importance of regular prenatal check-ups through health education. The implementation method for this activity included providing counseling materials, group discussions, case simulations, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The activity was conducted on July 15, 2025, in Village Y, District A, and involved 35 participants, consisting of pregnant women and health cadres. The results showed an increase in participants' understanding of the risks of inappropriate use of traditional medicines, with the average post-test score increasing by 61% compared to the pre-test. This activity also succeeded in building collective awareness about the importance of consulting a health professional before consuming traditional concoctions during pregnancy. This outreach activity is expected to be an early intervention that can prevent abortions caused by unsafe traditional medicine practices. Ongoing education and the involvement of community leaders and cadres are crucial strategies in developing safer, evidence-based health behaviors.

Abstract

Abortion is a profound experience of loss and can have serious psychological impacts on women, such as stress, depression, guilt, and anxiety. Unfortunately, the psychological aspects of post-abortion are often overlooked in primary health care. This community service project aims to provide psychological counseling to post-abortion mothers through an educational and counseling approach as a promotive-preventive effort to maintain mental health. The activity was held at Community Health Center X, District Y, for three days in July 2025, involving 20 participants who had a history of abortion within the past year. The methods used included group counseling, psychological counseling, open discussions, and the distribution of information modules. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge regarding the importance of emotional support and psychological recovery strategies after abortion. Participants also reported increased feelings of acceptance and reduced emotional burden after participating in the group counseling sessions. This activity demonstrates that psychological counseling is an effective form of intervention that can support the mental recovery of post-abortion mothers and should be integrated into public health services.

Abstract

Spontaneous abortion is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, especially among pregnant women who do not receive regular prenatal care. Lack of awareness about the importance of Antenatal Care (ANC) visits is a contributing factor to the low rate of early detection of pregnancy risks. This Community Service Program aims to increase awareness and knowledge among pregnant women, their families, and the broader community about the importance of regular ANC visits as a preventive measure against spontaneous abortion. The outreach activities were conducted in Village X in July 2025 using educational lectures, group discussions, video screenings, and the distribution of informational leaflets. The target audience for the activities included pregnant women, their spouses, and health workers. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure changes in participants' knowledge before and after the activities. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge levels, from 40% before the socialization to 85% afterward. The conclusion of this activity indicates that socialization using a participatory and educational approach is effective in improving community understanding of the benefits of regular ANC check-ups. Therefore, similar activities are highly recommended to be conducted regularly to reduce the incidence of spontaneous abortion in the community.

Abstract

The use of traditional medicines, passed down through generations, is still common in society, including among pregnant women. People often assume that traditional medicines are safe because they are made from natural ingredients, without considering their pharmacological effects and potential toxicity, especially during pregnancy. Some herbal remedies are known to cause uterine contractions, impaired fetal development, and even abortion. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to increase pregnant women's knowledge about the dangers of using traditional medicines without a prescription during pregnancy. The activity was conducted at Community Health Center X, Regency Y, using an interactive counseling method for 30 pregnant women. Evaluation used pre- and post-tests to measure participants' understanding. The results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge regarding the risks of over-the-counter use of traditional medicines. This activity demonstrates that community-based health education is an effective strategy in reducing the practice of using traditional medicines without medical supervision during pregnancy. It is hoped that this activity can become a sustainable program to reduce the number of abortions due to the use of non-standardized medicines.

Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and long-term dependency in patients, especially in the elderly. In the context of post-stroke recovery, home care plays a crucial role in supporting rehabilitation and improving patients' quality of life. However, families' limited knowledge and skills in caring for stroke patients often pose a major obstacle to the recovery process. This community service activity aims to strengthen the role of families in caring for stroke patients through home care education provided by community nurses. The activity included counseling, practical demonstrations, interactive discussions, and direct support for 20 families of stroke patients in the working area of Community Health Center X. Results showed a significant increase in knowledge, basic care skills, and family confidence after participating in the education. This activity demonstrates the strategic role of community nurses in family empowerment and spearheads the success of community-based home care programs. Sustainability of the program and cross-sectoral involvement are highly recommended to expand its impact.
