Abstract

Background: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women is a major risk factor contributing to stunting in children. A local food-based supplementary feeding (PMT) program has been implemented in several stunting-prone areas as a promotive-preventive strategy to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of the local food-based PMT program in reducing the prevalence of CED among pregnant women in stunting-prone areas. Methods: This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental pre-post test design without a control group. Subjects were 60 pregnant women in their second and third trimesters in the intervention area. Data were collected through measurements of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), body mass index (BMI), and nutritional intake questionnaires over a 3-month period. Results: There was a significant increase in mean MUAC from 22.8 cm to 24.1 cm (p<0.05), as well as an increase in daily energy and protein intake based on a 24-hour food recall. A total of 68.3% of respondents who were initially at risk of CED experienced improvements in nutritional status after the program was implemented. Conclusion: The local food-based PMT program is effective in reducing the risk of chronic energy deficiency syndrome (CED) and improving the nutritional status of pregnant women. Recommendations include integrating PMT into routine integrated health post (Posyandu) policies and sustainable use of local food resources.

Abstract

Background: Cardiac arrest is an emergency that requires rapid and appropriate treatment. Basic Life Support (BLS) training is an important effort to improve the competence of healthcare workers in providing first aid in this situation. However, nurses working outside the emergency department (non-ER) often do not receive routine training, thus hampering the potential for an effective initial response. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of BLS training on improving the competence of non-ER nurses in managing cardiac arrest. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach without a control group. The subjects were 40 non-ER nurses at a government hospital who participated in BLS training. Data were collected using a questionnaire and a skills observation checklist, analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: There was a significant increase in cognitive and psychomotor competency scores after BHD training (p < 0.001). The average pretest score was 58.3, increasing to 83.7 on the posttest. Conclusion: BHD training effectively improved the competency of non-ED nurses in managing cardiac arrest, both in terms of knowledge and skills. Routine training should be included in hospital quality improvement programs.

Abstract

Water quality is a crucial factor in maintaining public health, particularly in rural areas that still rely on traditional water sources such as dug wells. In Bulu Bulu Village, Maros Regency, most residents use dug well water for their daily needs, without knowing whether the water quality meets health standards. This study aims to analyze the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of dug well water and identify the relationship between water quality and the incidence of skin diseases in the community. This study used an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 15 randomly selected dug wells and 60 respondents who were active users of water from these wells. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess physical (color, odor, turbidity), chemical (pH, iron, nitrate), and microbiological (Escherichia coli) parameters. Data on skin diseases were collected through interviews, observations, and medical records from local health facilities. Data analysis used the Chi-square test to determine the relationship between water quality and the incidence of skin diseases. The results showed that most water samples contained E. coli contamination exceeding the threshold set by Minister of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017. 63% of respondents experienced skin disorders, primarily contact dermatitis and fungal infections. A significant association was found between the microbiological quality of dug well water and the risk of skin disease (p < 0.05). This study emphasizes the need for regular water quality monitoring and public education regarding environmental sanitation and safe water source management.

Abstract

Background: Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that requires immediate action in the form of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The success of CPR depends heavily on the speed of response and the skills of healthcare workers, particularly nurses as the frontline of care. However, the reality in the field shows that many nurses experience delays in responding and are less than optimal in performing CPR. Code Blue simulation is a training method that can improve preparedness and clinical skills in emergency situations. Objective: To determine the effect of Code Blue simulation on the speed of response and CPR skills of nurses in inpatient wards. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach without a control group. A total of 30 nurses were selected using purposive sampling. Measurements were taken before and after the Code Blue simulation intervention using a checklist for response speed and CPR skills based on the 2020 AHA guidelines. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: There was a significant increase in response speed (p=0.000) and CPR skill scores (p=0.000) after participating in the simulation. The average response time decreased from 98.2 seconds to 72.5 seconds, while skills increased from 24.4 to 36.3 (maximum scale of 40). Conclusion: The Code Blue simulation was effective in improving nurses' response speed and CPR skills. This intervention is feasible for routine implementation as a strategy to improve the quality of emergency care in hospitals.

Abstract

Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) remain a significant public health problem in endemic areas, especially among children. STH infections contribute to decreased nutritional status, iron deficiency anemia, and growth and cognitive disorders. This literature review aims to analyze the relationship between iron status, macro- and micronutrient intake, and the risk of STH infection in children. Articles were searched through Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science with inclusion criteria covering publications from 2015–2025, observational studies on children under 18 years old, and discussions on the link between nutritional status and STH. The results show that STH infections cause anemia through intestinal bleeding, malabsorption, and chronic inflammation that increases hepcidin levels. Deficiencies in protein, energy, iron, zinc, and vitamin A can weaken immunity and worsen the cycle of malnutrition. Relying solely on mass deworming programs is insufficient without improvements in sanitation, nutrition education, and supplementation of essential nutrients. It is expected that this review can serve as a basis for holistic intervention recommendations to reduce the prevalence of STH infections among children in endemic areas.

Abstract

Chronic diseases in children pose a serious challenge in healthcare because they impact not only physical health but also psychological, social, and academic aspects. The quality of life of pediatric patients with chronic diseases is significantly influenced by various factors, including family support, socioeconomic status, medication adherence, and the duration of the child's illness. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing the quality of life of pediatric patients with chronic diseases at Prof. Dr. Kandou General Hospital in Manado on April 18, 2025. The research method used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 80 children aged 7–17 years with a diagnosis of chronic diseases (cancer, thalassemia, and chronic kidney failure) selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) to assess children's quality of life and supporting questionnaires to measure influencing factors. Data analysis was performed using logistic regression with a significance level of p<0.05. The results showed that the most influential factor affecting children's quality of life was family support (p=0.002), followed by socioeconomic status (p=0.011), and medication adherence (p=0.023). Meanwhile, disease duration did not show a significant effect (p=0.089). The conclusion of this study is that family support is a major factor influencing the quality of life of children with chronic illnesses. Therefore, healthcare interventions should focus on strengthening family support, educating patients about the importance of medication adherence, and providing socioeconomic support to improve children's well-being.
