Abstract

Traditional society is a society that is strongly influenced by tradition. However, the fact is a society can also change such strong tradition. This research aims to understand the driving force that allows the influence of tradition and changes in traditions by traditional societies. Through a systematic review of relevant literature, this research complements Giddens' structuration theory with MacIntyre's thoughts about cultural components that make up the cognitive structure and shows that worldview - a virtual structure in cognition that corresponds to the structure of society - is the force that determines the influence and change of traditions. Therefore, different from studies that point to external forces such as education, globalization, and modernization as causes of changes in traditional societies, this study refers to worldview as an agent's internal capacity. The influence of tradition on agents and changes in tradition caused by various external forces is mediated by worldview; thus, the power of tradition presupposes the power of worldview, and changes in tradition presuppose a change in worldview.

Abstract

The glance of perfume advertising found in the previous study has two main themes: visual and verbal strategies. Video advertisement of Guerlain brand perfume from France for his latest male series, L’Homme Idéal, displayed containing both themes referred to the domination of monochrome colors and the narration of the explanation of perfume itself uploaded through YouTube social media. This study examines metaphors and signs in an advertisement to see how far the advertisement affects people’s minds in playing with their imagination, using a qualitative method and literature studies as a data collection technique. The analysis uses Kövecses’s metaphorical theory, Peirce’s semiotics, and Baudrillard’s hyperreality and is supported seven informants’ input. It is found that seductive language in the form of metaphors succeeded in attracting male consumers. Various signs are also found to help the metaphor visualize the ideal image of masculinity through handsomeness, intelligence, and strength. Combining these two types of themes in the depiction of lifestyle and the explanation of the perfume smell in this video advertisement has a great potential to affect people in achieving hyperreality.

This article describes the aesthetics of the big band jazz music by Salamander Big Band. Aesthetics is a study of the processes that occur in three basic elements: aesthetic objects, aesthetic subjects, and aesthetic values related to aesthetic experiences, aesthetic properties, and attractive and unattractive parameters. This paper presents the basic elements of western music aesthetics, especially big band jazz music, and how Salamander Big band can implement the aesthetic values of western jazz big band music in the music played. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method. Through a process of appreciation, habituation, additional insight into jazz music and continuous and consistent practice, Salamander Big Band members can adapt to cultures from outside Indonesia's popular music culture, namely playing American big band music with the right aesthetic.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Construction of Nationalism Identity in Baduy Society Based on Pikukuh and Buyut.” This is a library research on the philosophical life of the Baduy, a traditional community in Indonesia. Analysis was conducted using interpretation, inductive and deductive, internal coherence, and holistica approaches. This research resulted is some conclusions. First, the Baduy community was found to uphold a form of ethno- nationalism which is based on Pikukuh and Buyut with a strong focus on the meaning of leadership, communal life, and observance of laws. However, this ethno-nationalism does not conflict with the state nationalism upheld by the Indonesian government. Indeed, seba shows that there has always been good relationship between the Baduy people (which uphold ethno-nationalism) and the Indonesian government (which upholds state nationalism). Secondly, the “imagined” nationalism in the Baduy community is founded based on traditional bond, in which case nationalism is not separated from tradition. Consequently, the values are oriented towards basic rationality in order to construct an identity of nationalism unique to the Baduy community. However, at the same time, instrumental rationality and the value-oriented rationality have the same role, in that they serve to construct the meaning of nationalism in the Baduy community. All of these factors result in a harmonious relationship between ethno-nationalism upheld by the the Baduy community and state nationalism upheld by the Indonesian government.

Abstract

Ondel-ondel, initially believed to have fearsome characteristics and magical ability to ward evil spirits off, is still performed in various areas in Jakarta on particular occasions. Ondel- ondel was originally an ancient artwork named barongan. This research aims to seek a theoretical explanation of the ondel-ondel phenomenon by examining the relationship between the media and local culture. Several defining features of postmodernism are incorporated to reframe ondel-ondel as a form of entertainment, along with the interplay between the tradition and technology-assisted media. This paper seeks to reveal the actual meaning of ondel-ondel for locals and non-locals during their encounters with ondel-ondel. The research found (1) that ondel-ondel is an attempt to reinvent the way people seek entertainment in the face of changes brought about by modernity and (2) that the presence of ondel-ondel communicated in the virtual space generates digital traces in the form of messages contributing to the creation and the re-creation of ondel- ondel itself.

Abstract

In medical-psychology, schizophrenia is defined as a severe psychotic disorder that causes its sufferers to experience hallucinations and chaotic behaviors. However, the paradigm of schizoanalysis considers schizophrenia as a system of thought that opposes the existence of established discourses (i.e. the Oedipus System). One form of schizophrenia can be seen in the Joker movie (2019). This research aims to identify the schizophrenia suffered by Arthur Fleck, the movie’s main character, from the schizoanalysis perspective as proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. This qualitative research applied the interpretative description method based on the schizoanalysis perspective. This research found that the Joker character, as a schizophrenic, successfully reconstructs established ideas in his own ways solely through his desires. Joker unleashes his desires through practices presented as a form of resistance to the established system in Gotham City. This “madness” character was displayed by Arthur Fleck who opposes prevailing social values and norms, which he had previously imagined and questioned. However, he ends up destroying a greater system or order. Joker, as a progressive and revolutionary schizophrenic subject, clearly shows how a person can deconstruct the Oedipus to turn it into a counter-ammunition. Furthermore, the movie also shows that the broader “Joker movement” is disorganized as much as it is unplanned, spontaneous, and creative. Such spontaneity and creativity generates the flow of energy which stimulates those demonstrators to take a fight against capitalism.

Abstract

This article aims to understand the development of fashion consumerism in the United Kingdom (UK) with the focus: why fast fashion consumerism in the last two decades was very high? This study applied a post-structuralism paradigm, namely the Libidinal Economy concept from Jean-Francois Lyotard and a post-modernism paradigm on the Consumer Society from Jean Baudrillard. The method employed in the article is a case study in the UK in the last two decades. Data were collected from scientific writings, documents, news, and advertisements in media. The results show that fashion consumerism in the UK dated back to the 18th century; it strengthened in the first two decades of the 21st century, driven by libidinal economic activities and facilitated massively by technological advancements in both marketing and trades. The ability of multinational fast fashion companies to utilize the mass media to construct the social status of its consumers and to create “hyper-reality” needed by modern people nowadays seemed to surpass the awareness of British clothing consumers regarding the environmental impacts and global imbalances of the fast fashion industry. In this study, the application of the post- structuralism paradigm clarifies the relationship between technology, mass media, the expansion of capitalism and the consumption of fast fashion in British society, whereas the post-modernism paradigm highlights socio-cultural aspects that encouraged the creation of hyper-reality through fast fashion among the British. These findings contribute to the knowledge about the relationship between technology, media, and multinational fast fashion companies with the development of consumer society in the UK.

Abstract

Using the method of collaborative autoethnography, this study critically reflects on the life stories of three women from different backgrounds by focusing on gender and religion. One of the main aspects that we examined is gender projects, i.e. the projections people make when imagining their future gender roles and identities. As a result of our (self-) observations, we found that, while at first the gender project of those women was formed by the patriarchal gender order of their society, as time progresses, after living through and evaluating a variety of often traumatic experiences, they developed their own gender projects more independently from the constraints of the society. Religion played double roles during this process. Sometimes religious institutions became the space where traumatic experiences occurred and were even promoted, while in other contexts, religious institutions were experienced as safe spaces. However, their personal spirituality and self-transformation tended to be nurtured outside of formal religious institutions. In the end, the evaluation of these plural and complex experiences led us to more awareness of the limitations of religious institutions in accommodating and supporting women’s spirituality, due to their patriarchal gender regimes.

Abstract

Women have a role in a particular culture, and this can serve as a way to express their freedom and to be on an equal footing with their male counterparts. The Jering ethnic group in Palangas Village, Bangka Island, has a traditional ritual that is still carried out by the community, namely sedekah gunung. This ritual is carried out once a year, coinciding with the 14th night of the full moon. This ritual serves as an expression of gratitude for the good harvest that occurred for the entire year. This study used the descriptive qualitative method, while data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation. The focus of this research is the role of women in the sedekah gunung ritual. There are several roles and functions that women serve both before and after the ritual. Just like cooking, which is predominantly done by women, the campak dambus dance is also performed by women in cultural arts performances, while the tabuh dance is also part of a series of rituals during the sedekah gunung. Women’s roles in such rituals, as well as the belief surrounding them, show that they always do things that are considered good according to the local custom. Our observation shows that the role of women is still very dominant in the ritual even though some roles have been taken over by men. The role of women in the ritual almost equals the role of men, and the involvement of women in the tradition can greatly contribute to the preservation of the tradition so that it can continue to this day.

Abstract

This paper discusses the sakaiba ritual procession in Minahasa which is carried out every year by the Christian community to welcome the New Year. The research was conducted in Taratara village, Tomohon, North Sulawesi. This study focuses on the significance and meaning of the sakaiba ritual procession within the context of the hybridization of contemporary religious culture in Minahasa. By using the theoretical concepts of ritual and dramaturgy, as well as applying the descriptive qualitative methods, this research found that the sakaiba ritual procession is a liminal hinge that allows a peaceful encounter between the ancient Minahasa traditions and the Christian faith. This hinge promotes a contemporary Minahasa religious culture that is inclusive and transformative in the face of other cultural and religious elements present in their history and real life experiences.
