Abstract

At the end of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century, International tourists have begun visiting the Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Therefore, guidebooks about the Dutch East Indies and Malaya were published for travellers and tourists. Using the historical method, this article discusses which information, how and why the information presented in the early tourist guidebooks. The result shows that the guidebooks provide various information not only about the objects that can be visited, but also about natural scenery, peoples, culinary, flora, fauna, and customs in the regions. They presented in a long narrative and practical text with illustrations. The illustrations in the Indies’ tourist guidebooks are more varied and accentuate nature and culture compared to Malaya’s guidebooks. Both of them presented exotics objects with the aim to attract western tourists in particular.

Abstract

Japan has experienced a rapid decrease in population. The main reason for this distorted demography (called Shoushi Koureika in Japanese) has been caused by a reduction in the number of children. Another reason is the extension of human lifespan. This rapid demographic change has caused social issues such as lack of workforce, an increase in the social security revenue and a reduction in the number of schools. The Japanese government has tackled these social problems and its effort has had an effect to some extent, but the hard work needs to continue. In this article, I try to explore reasons for the social issues and problems by focusing not only on changes in the social conditions but also on changes in the life value of Japanese people. Some possible solutions for the social issues and problems can be suggested for the coming decades in Japan. In particular, I try to explore solutions that are compatible with Japanese society to alleviate the problems.

Abstract

The focus of discussion in this paper is joget as a dance which embodies the concept of Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago), which has undergone much development from the past to the present. Beginning as an entertaining social dance in various Southeast Asian countries, joget became a customary form of entertainment in the whole context of Nusantara as a region. Surprisingly, it has also inspired new genres and types of traditional dances for centuries. Around 1920s to 1930s, it was the most popular form of dance in many halls of entertainment in Indonesia, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula. Joget was the most common type of social dance. It has an indigenous origin, but gained popularity in urban setting at the time when ballroom and Latin-American dances were not yet popular.

Abstract

This paper discusses the dissemination of information about cultural heritage to the young generation, particularly about the kingdom of Majapahit whose ancient sites are situated in Trowulan, East Java, Indonesia. In the context of public archaeology, heritage information is no longer communicated to the public in mind-numbing ways; instead, it is presented in such a way as to increase positive attitude and behavior toward the cultural heritage. In the context of marketing communication, the dissemination of information which is in accordance with the consumers’ or visitors’ tastes can no longer be performed by presenting raw facts only, but by presenting the information in the form of underdog or topdog stories or narratives. The objective of the research in this paper is to measure the effects of the dissemination of information about Majapahit cultural heritage by means of narratives on public attitude, intention to visit, and pride. The research applied the 3x1 experiment design to the participants. Our research findings confirm that the dissemination of cultural heritage information in the form of topdog narratives directly improved the participants’ attitude toward and intention to visit Majapahit relics in Trowulan. Additionally, the dissemination of cultural heritage information in the form of topdog narratives also increased the participants’ pride in Indonesia.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape (LL) refers to a set of linguistic objects which signifies a public space (Ben-Rafael, Shohamy et al., 2006). This concept encompasses a number of topics such as social, political, cultural, and economic ones. Using the concept of LL, the author examined the names of the main streets (râjamârga) around the Yogyakarta Palace in terms of their function as the identifiers of place names (informational function) and as carriers of certain messages (symbolic function). In order to generate comprehensive results, the author used qualitative approach through the analysis of visual data (photographs) of street name plates. The findings reveal two functions of linguistic landscape which is established by street name plates. The first is informational function, namely to refer to geographical places and to the social space of the Javanese which are presented as a single ethnic group, while the orthographic use of hanacaraka asserts language boundary. The second is symbolic function, namely to convey a collection of meanings (according to the philosophy of Paraning Dumadi), to delineate Javanese as an ethnic group, to designate Javanese as the native language of the local people, to indicate a strong link between governmental powers and place naming practices, and even to serve economic purposes by attracting tourists to Yogyakarta.

Abstract

The main objective of this research is mapping and exploring how the oppression and resistance of the main character (Kekayi) in Oka Rusmini’s short story Pohon Api are manifested through the strategic use of her own intellectuality, not only her beauty; her focus on future visions; and her attempt to garner support from the higher authority to win the competition. This research applied the qualitative approach with content analysis method. This research reveals that Kekayi, the main character in Oka Rusmini’s short story "Pohon Api", is an individual who is at an "intersection". She faces a series of oppression, discrimination, harassment, and unpleasant events which comes from all directions of the "intersection". Then, when a bad treatment is given, it will form a particular pattern that becomes habitual and eventually becomes an ideology. Furthermore, Kekayi possesses the capital to become a strong woman. That power is something given by the Almighty. However, she is also a female learner who always wants to be equal with men.

Abstract

9 Summers 10 Autumns (2011) is an autobiographical novel about a young man from a small city of Batu who later succeeds in pursuing his dream by working in the United States. The novel was written based on Iwan Setyawan’s life story and it was made into a movie by the same title in 2013. Two years later, the movie was adapted into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book which combines novel, comic, app, and movie together. This phenomenon of re-transformation of a literary work is said to be the first of its kind in Indonesia and has somewhat contributed to the rising trend of movies adapted into books or comics in Indonesia, such as Assalamualaikum Beijing (2015) and Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What’s Up with Love?) (2016). This study examines Iwan Setyawan’s strategy for achieving legitimacy in the arena of Indonesian literature through his motivational rags-to-riches ideals which are depicted in the book. The discussion is carried out by applying Pierre Bourdieu’s field of cultural production theory, as well as the sociology of literature approach, in order to highlight the phenomenon of transformation from novel into movie and eventually into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book. Later, this study discovered that the phenomenon has changed the image of Indonesian art and literary world. It proves that such prestigious legitimacy can now be achieved through commercial strategies, making it seem dynamic, but at the same time questionable in its most authentic sense.

Abstract

Regional upheavals that occurred in Sumatra and Sulawesi in the period of 1956–1961 indicated a meeting point between two interests, i.e. the desire of the regions to get rights through regional autonomy and develop power to eradicate communism. This paper aimed at analysing regional upheavals involving PRRI-Permesta in terms of the meeting point between the two different interests. The method used in this study is a historical one. The results showed that the upheavals that arose from certain interests could not be accommodated by the central government, and this made the region take the initiative to solve them with military engagement. It can be concluded that PRRI-Permesta was an emerging movement in the region demanding reforms in the management of the state by the central government. The anti-communist characteristics of the movement made the United States of America ready to provide support for a movement against the central government. However, this also means that there was an encounter between two different interests in one vision of the struggle.

Abstract

Jenderal Soedirman (2015) is a historical film that reveals the story of General Soedirman during the guerrilla war to maintain the Indonesia’s independence. The film was sponsored directly by the army (Kartika Eka Paksi Foundation and TNI) and involved the army in its making process. Therefore, the historical representation of this film is a history from the army’s point of view. Referring to Gramsci, a film can be seen as a hegemonic apparatus that contributes to the process of negotiating the interests of dominant groups. This study attempted to elaborate such representations of civil-military relationships and masculinity construction contained in Jenderal Soedirman. It used a qualitative approach and employed the encoding/decoding paradigm proposed by Stuart Hall. The results showed that the civil-military relationships in this film were mostly dominated by military roles. Masculinity in this film was formed by combining the concept of “Kiai” (Muslim clerics) and military patriotism wrapped in Islamic expressions.

Abstract

Since the independence, Laos has changed its national identity based on different principles namely Buddhism, Socialism and Consolidation between Buddhism and Socialism. These changes have given dynamic impacts to the identity of the people not only from their political life but also from socio-cultural life. This paper will specifically discuss the impacts undergone by the Hmong as one of the ethnic minorities that are often excluded from the discussion of ethnic groups in Laos. The discussion uses three approaches of ethnicity, namely Primordialism, Instrumentalism, and Constructivism in order to explain the dynamic identity of the Hmong. This paper argues that ethnic identity is always changing since it depends on the strength of power and resistance towards the assignation and assertion of meanings.
