Abstract

This study discusses the moderation of the Islamic movement in efforts to implement peace between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Nations in the southern Philippines. In this study, the authors use the Moderation Inclusion theory from Schwedler, the Social Movement theory from Sidney Tarrow, and the Wasathiyah Islamic theory. The authors will raise the actors who play a role in the Islamic movement and the factors that cause changes in the pattern of the movement. This research begins with an overview of the prolonged conflict that began with the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese colonialists in the context of gold, glory, and gospel. The conflict continued after the independence of the Philippines in 1946. The economic gap to discrimination between Catholics in the northern Philippines and Muslims in the southern Philippines was one of the reasons for the continuing conflict. There were changes in the pattern of movements that occurred from the beginning fundamentally by taking up arms and turning into a diplomatic movement, at least caused by two main factors: first, about the paradigm shift that emerged from internal, and second, there was intervention from external, especially the international Islamic world.

Abstract

Lebanon has experienced a long political stalemate due to sectarian tensions. The negative effect of confessionalism theory makes sectarian identity stronger and ultimately results in instability and fragility of the Lebanese political system. The opposition demands political and economic reforms. The Lebanese general election, 15 May 2022, is expected to bring goodness to the Lebanese people. This paper wants to analyze the possibility of these changes. The results of the research show that the transformation of Lebanon towards a democratic government is always hindered by sectarian conflicts within the government. But through the results of the 2022 elections, there is hope for political reform in Lebanon. The election of 13 independent MPs is a celebration of democracy in the Middle East. This is a very important small step towards more peaceful and democratic political reforms in Lebanon.

Abstract

As a financial institution, Islamic banking certainly has the possibility of problems occurring which will reduce solvency. The emergence of problems in Islamic banking certainly requires authority from the financial authority. One of the authorities that has this authority is the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation through the implementation of the bank's resolution function. The resolution function is carried out by handling and solving bank solvency problems (problem banks), one of the options is the transfer of assets and liabilities. This option can also be referred to as the purchase and assumption (P&A) method. The resolution option for the P&A method is to transfer the assets and liabilities of the troubled bank to the prospective Assuming Bank. In the event that there are Islamic banks experiencing solvency problems, it is necessary to measure other Islamic banks that have the potential to become candidates for Assuming Banks. This measurement uses a quantitative method in the form of a balance sheet implementation (simulation) to determine the impact of the transfer of assets and liabilities on the capital and liquidity of the prospective Assuming Bank. In addition to the simulation mechanism, qualitative methods are also carried out through in-depth interviews to obtain a big picture of the concerns in the resolution process for Islamic banks. Based on the results of the analysis, the resolution process for Islamic banks using the P&A option can be carried out for troubled banks with medium-small asset sizes with Assuming Banks at a higher asset level. This is in line with the bigger the bank's problems, the more it will require the implementation of increasingly complex resolutions.

Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) may have withdrawn its troops from Yemen, but its influence remains substantial and significant. From the first stage of the war, Saudi Arabia focused on the north of Yemen, while the UAE actively engaged in the north's south and coastal areas. Not only trains fighters, but the UAE also provides them with financial and political support. This is a descriptive-analytical article, using qualitative methods with data and works of literature, collected various books, journals, and online resources related to the topic. Furthermore, the author uses the "devide et impera" theory to elaborate, examine, and investigate the UAE's policy, as well as its strategy, in Yemen. This article found that UAE's divide and rule strategy is applied to achieve several interests in Yemen, such as countering terrorism, extremism, and Houthi. Nevertheless, the UAE is also ambitious to dispel al-Islah, a group affiliated to the Islamic Brotherhood.

Abstract

The Islamic Revolution of 1979 brought Iran to be transformed into a new revolutionary theocratic republic. This is in line with the raison d’être of the Iranian constitution, realizing the life of the nation and state based on the noble and universal values of Islam. Meanwhile, the existence of power competition and conflicting conceptions of authority have been reflected in its political constellation. Islam in the realm of this state is not only understood as a religious institution but also a concept of political spirituality. The hijab policy, for example, has become part of Iranian culture ever since and became a political symbol after the government of Shah Pahlavi in 1936 banned the use of the hijab through the Kashf e Hejab decree. In addition, visual observations through various authentic and reliable video recordings and news reports from Iran over the past 5 years are made to examine what is misunderstood by the world about Iran and its people. Therefore, the results of the analysis should be able to explain how media distortion affects Iran’s political decisions. Because politics plays an important role in the expression of public policy. If the policies implemented contain identity politics, then it will have a significant impact on the emergence of social divisions in Iranian society

Abstract

Qatar's role as a regional mediator allowed it to emerge even further into global politics and it’s a step toward creating its own evolving independent political persona. As a mediator, Qatar has left its choices open to develop diplomatic relations with non-state actors and countries that have controversies in the Middle East. This research uses a case study approach to explore information about several foreign policies carried out by Qatar against countries and non-state actors in the Middle East. The results of this study show that Qatar, with its rationality, weighs the benefits for the personal interests of the state. To achieve its goals, Qatar will choose consistent and stable preferences, compare the benefits and costs of all available options, and choose the most optimal choice that is maximizing results. From all the mediations that have been carried out, Qatar mostly has used its country's ability to eliminate conflicts in the region. Therefore, the case study of Qatar then illustrates that a country can directly or indirectly use the capacity of the state to engage with non-state actors who are deemed to have benefits for Qatar itself.

Abstract

Waqf is one of the potential financial instruments in Islamic economics. As a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia has responded positively to developments in the waqf model, especially productive waqf. The waqf potential predicted in 2024 will reach 71.8 trillion, while the realization of waqf is only 199 billion. This means that there is a gap of up to 71.6 trillion between the waqf potential and its realization. This occurs as a result of the lack of knowledge about waqf, including nazhir as the manager of waqf assets. Moreover, the majority of nazirs in Indonesia is considered inexperienced, so that the management of waqf assets is only for consumption. As a vital human resource in the management of waqf, nazhir is required to have a principle of professionalism in his work, and he must understand his duties. This research is a qualitative descriptive research using literature study method. The results of this research show that the problems are caused by human resources who do not understand the functions of the nazhir profession, so certification and standardization of nazhir competencies must be implemented. As one of the nazhirs with legal entities, Pondok Pesantren can be the main target for the professional nazhir certification program. This is based on the fact that people get waqf information from religious leaders and choose to channel waqf funds through institutions that already have legality. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out certification and standardization of professional nazhir competencies so that the management of productive waqf in Indonesia is growing, especially for Pondok Pesantren because religious leaders still have a strong influence in society. Besides that, human resources of Islamic boarding school have been equipped with adequate religious knowledge in understanding waqf. Many of the Pondok Pesantren have productive waqf assets. However, it must be supported by certification so that its legality in positive law can be recognized.
