Abstract

Peer support is an important social factor that contributes to adolescents' psychological development. Insufficient peer support may increase the risk of mental health problems among adolescents. This study aimed to examine the correlation between peer support and adolescent mental health problems among students of SMP Negeri 1 Pandak, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. A total of 67 students were recruited using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using a peer support questionnaire and an adolescent mental health problems questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Kendall's Tau correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents reported low peer support (56.7%) and very severe mental health problems (86.6%). Kendall's Tau analysis revealed a significant correlation between peer support and adolescent mental health problems (τ = -0.317; p = 0.004). The negative correlation coefficient indicates that higher levels of peer support were associated with lower levels of mental health problems among adolescents. These findings suggest that peer support plays an important protective role in maintaining adolescent mental health. Strengthening positive peer relationships may contribute to the prevention and reduction of mental health problems among adolescents.

Abstract

Mobile phones are widely used in daily life and may serve as reservoirs of microorganisms because of their frequent contact with hands, faces, and environmental surfaces. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most commonly isolated bacteria from mobile phone surfaces and has the potential to cause various infections in humans. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus contamination on mobile phones used by medical students and to review hygiene practices and antiseptic use in the prevention of bacterial transmission. This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design. A total of 60 mobile phones belonging to medical students at a private university in Indonesia were included. Samples were collected using a swab technique from phone screen surfaces and cultured on Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA). Data regarding hygiene practices were collected using questionnaires and analyzed descriptively using frequency and percentage distributions. Of the 60 mobile phones examined, 43 samples (71.7%) demonstrated colony growth interpreted as Staphylococcus aureus, while 17 samples (28.3%) showed no bacterial growth. Contamination was more frequently observed on phones owned by male students (58.1%) than female students (41.9%). Most respondents reported washing their hands with soap and water (66.7%), using antiseptic soap and water (28.3%), and cleaning their phone screens daily (66.7%). However, only 11.7% reported using disinfectants to clean their mobile phone screens. The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus contamination on medical students’ mobile phones was high, indicating that mobile phones may serve as reservoirs and potential transmission media for bacteria. Although most respondents reported adequate hygiene practices, the use of disinfectants for mobile phone cleaning remained limited. Routine cleaning with alcohol-based antiseptics may represent a simple and effective strategy to reduce bacterial contamination and transmission.

Abstract

Leprosy remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia, affecting not only physical health but also creating substantial social consequences through stigma. Social stigma may influence patients’ health behaviors, including treatment adherence and therapeutic outcomes. This study aimed to examine the influence of social stigma on treatment adherence and clinical outcomes among leprosy patients in Indonesia using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. Literature searches were conducted across several scientific databases, focusing on studies published between 2022 and 2026. The selection process followed predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 30 eligible articles for analysis. The review found that social stigma contributes to poor treatment adherence, delayed health-seeking behavior, reduced quality of life, and increased risk of mental health problems among people affected by leprosy. Family support, community support, health education, self-care interventions, and healthcare worker involvement were identified as important factors in reducing stigma and improving treatment success. The findings highlight the need to integrate social and psychological interventions with medical services to enhance treatment adherence and clinical outcomes among leprosy patients in Indonesia.

Abstract

Secondary caries is a primary cause of restoration failure; if left untreated, it can progress to pulp necrosis and periapical lesions. For anterior teeth, treatment success depends not only on eliminating infection but also on restoring function and aesthetics through appropriate post-endodontic restoration. A patient presented with discoloration and structural damage to a previously restored maxillary lateral incisor. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed secondary caries leading to pulp necrosis and a periapical lesion. Treatment involved root canal therapy using the step-back technique, irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and intracanal medication with calcium hydroxide. Once the root canal was asymptomatic, obturation was performed using the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha and sealer. Post-endodontic restoration was achieved using a fiber post, core build-up, and a porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown. NaOCl and calcium hydroxide play a role in eliminating microorganisms and promoting periapical tissue healing. Fiber posts provide superior stress distribution, while PFM crowns effectively restore the strength and aesthetics of anterior teeth. The combination of root canal therapy, a fiber post, and a PFM crown successfully restored the tooth's function, aesthetics, and structural integrity, resulting in a favorable prognosis.

Abstract

Hypotension is a common complication following spinal anesthesia in cesarean section patients due to sympathetic blockade, which causes vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. This study aimed to describe the incidence of post-spinal anesthesia hypotension among cesarean section patients at Emanuel Hospital Banjarnegara. This study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive observational design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 63 respondents selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected through blood pressure monitoring every 3 minutes for 30 minutes following spinal anesthesia. The results showed that most respondents were aged 20–35 years (85.7%), had a fasting duration of ≤8 hours (79.4%), were classified as ASA II (100%), received fluid preloading of ≤500 mL (77.8%), were not administered vasopressors (68.3%), and had the highest level of spinal block at the L3–L4 intervertebral space (81%). Based on these characteristics, hypotension occurred most frequently among patients aged 20–35 years, with a fasting duration of ≤8 hours, ASA II status, fluid preloading of ≤500 mL, no vasopressor administration, and spinal block at the L3–L4 level. The mean systolic blood pressure before anesthesia was 130.35 mmHg and decreased to its lowest value of 111.68 mmHg at the third minute, then remained relatively stable until the 30th minute within the range of 115–120 mmHg. The mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 81.73 mmHg to 67.14 mmHg at the third minute and remained stable within the range of 66–70 mmHg until the 30th minute.Of the 63 respondents, 37 patients (58.7%) experienced hypotension, while 26 patients (41.3%) did not. These findings indicate that post-spinal anesthesia hypotension remains a common occurrence among cesarean section patients. Therefore, strict hemodynamic monitoring is required, particularly during the early minutes after spinal anesthesia, along with appropriate consideration of fluid administration and vasopressor use.

Abstract

Background: Labor pain during the first stage of labor is a physiological condition caused by uterine contractions, cervical dilation, and fetal head descent. Inadequate pain management may increase anxiety, stress, fatigue, and prolong the labor process. One non-pharmacological approach to reducing labor pain is the combination of deep breathing relaxation and lavender aromatherapy. Deep breathing relaxation helps relieve muscle tension and promotes physical relaxation, while lavender aromatherapy stimulates the limbic system to produce a calming effect and reduce pain perception. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of combining deep breathing relaxation with lavender aromatherapy on reducing first-stage labor pain at the Ampelgading Community Health Center, Malang Regency. Methods: A quantitative study with a comparative design was conducted involving 30 women in the first stage of labor, consisting of 15 participants in the intervention group and 15 in the control group selected through total sampling. Data were collected using observation sheets and labor pain questionnaires and analyzed with the Mann–Whitney test. Results: All respondents (100%) in the intervention group experienced mild pain after receiving the combined intervention, whereas most respondents in the control group continued to experience moderate pain. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the two groups (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of deep breathing relaxation and lavender aromatherapy is effective in reducing pain during the first stage of labor and may serve as a safe, simple, and effective non-pharmacological intervention for labor pain management.

Abstract

Pain in third-trimester pregnant women is a common complaint due to physiological changes, weight gain, uterine enlargement, and pressure on the musculoskeletal structure. This condition can cause discomfort, disrupt daily activities, and even affect the quality of life of pregnant women. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to help reduce pain levels is storytelling. This method provides cognitive distraction so that the mother's attention is diverted from the sensation of pain. This study aims to determine the effect of storytelling on reducing pain levels in third-trimester pregnant women. This study used a quantitative design with a comparative approach between the control group and the intervention group. The study sample consisted of 30 third-trimester pregnant women divided into two groups, each with 15 respondents. The sampling technique used total sampling. Data were analyzed using cross-tabulation to determine differences in pain levels between the two groups. The results showed that all respondents in the intervention group (100%) experienced mild pain after being given storytelling. Meanwhile, in the control group, the majority of respondents experienced severe pain (11 people (73.3%) and moderate pain (4 people (26.7%). Storytelling has an effect on reducing pain levels in third-trimester pregnant women. This intervention can be used as a non-pharmacological alternative that is safe, simple, and easy to implement in midwifery practice.

Abstract

Cesarean section (CS) is an obstetric surgical procedure whose incidence continues to rise, making it necessary to optimize postoperative recovery to support early mobilization and prevent complications. Most CS procedures are performed under spinal anesthesia, making motor recovery an important indicator assessed using the Bromage score. The ERACS method was developed to accelerate recovery through a multimodal approach. Data from Emanuel Hospital show that out of 223 CS cases, 70 cases used ERACS and 153 cases were non-ERACS; however, data on the time to achieve a Bromage score of 2 for both methods are not yet available. This study aims to determine the profile of the time to achieve a Bromage score of 2 in post-SC patients using the ERACS and non-ERACS methods. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach involving 55 respondents selected via consecutive sampling. Data were collected through observation until patients reached a Bromage score of 2 and were analyzed using univariate analysis. The results showed that the mean time to achieve a Bromage score of 2 in the ERACS group was 39.00 minutes (15–75 minutes), and in the non-ERACS group, it was 67.50 minutes (30–90 minutes). Respondents were aged 19–43 years, with the majority having an ASA II physical status (96.4%), and the most commonly used anesthetics were bupivacaine (56.4%) and lidocaine-morphine as an adjuvant (43.6%). In conclusion, the ERACS method showed a trend toward faster motor recovery, thereby potentially supporting early mobilization and the development of perioperative care protocols. These findings reinforce the importance of implementing ERACS in anesthetic practice to support early mobilization, serve as a basis for the development of hospital protocols, and open opportunities for further research with analytical designs to strengthen the scientific evidence.
