Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of basic percussion line training in the Semen Padang Marching Band using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that training begins with physical and technical warm-ups. Technical warm-ups include loosening the finger and wrist muscles without and with sticks/mallets, grip technique, basic strokes (natural stroke and downstroke), basic percussion rudiments, dynamics, legato, and staccato. The up stroke is not taught because it is considered difficult and time-consuming. Rudiments for PIT instruments include single stroke, double stroke, and accent tap, while battery percussion uses single stroke, double stroke/diddles, roll, accent tap, and flam. All techniques are tailored to support the repertoire performed for the 2025 Parade Senja.

Abstract

This study examines the regeneration of Saluang Panjang traditional art in Nagari Luak Kapau, South Solok Regency, which has experienced a decline in interest among the younger generation due to social change. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The findings indicate that Saluang Panjang is still recognized as part of the community’s cultural identity, although the frequency of its performances has decreased. The performances are presented in a simple form, involving a saluang player and a singer performing traditional pantun with distinctive South Solok expressions, and the regeneration process occurs through oblique transmission directly from the artists.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of dance appreciation learning based on the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model, as well as the involvement and abilities of ninth-grade students (Class IX/E) at SMP Negeri 41 Padang. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, using observation, interviews, and documentation for data collection. The results show that PjBL-based learning was carried out through the stages of planning, implementation, project activities, and evaluation. At the beginning of the learning process, students’ participation and understanding were relatively low; however, they improved after engaging in activities such as observing dance performance videos, group discussions, and project presentations. The PjBL model encourages students to be more active and collaborative, although the learning process has not yet been fully optimal due to limited student focus at the initial stage and the less effective use of instructional modules.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Gamad music presentation in modern performance contexts by the Gamad Pituah Minang Group in Padang City. Gamad music is a traditional musical form of the Minangkabau community that emerged through the acculturation of Portuguese, Malay, and Minangkabau cultures, characterized by distinctive song structures, instrumental usage, and improvised pantun. Contemporary developments have encouraged changes in the presentation of Gamad music, one of which is reflected in the practices of Gamad Pituah Minang. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected through literature review, observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted by collecting, classifying, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from the research findings. The results indicate that Gamad Pituah Minang has carried out transformations through the development of musical arrangements, the use of modern instruments, adjustments in vocal techniques, and the utilization of digital media. Nevertheless, the fundamental structure of Gamad music is maintained, resulting in a generally positive public response toward the transformations implemented by the group. These findings demonstrate that Gamad music can continue to evolve without losing its Minangkabau cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the contextual meanings of movements in the Kain Dance of Pauh Limo, Pauh District, Padang City, using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through literature review, observation, interviews, and documentation, utilizing both primary and secondary data. The results show that each movement in the Kain Dance contains meanings closely related to the Minangkabau worldview. The Opening Sambah movement symbolizes surrender to God and respect for nature and fellow human beings, while the worship toward the four directions reflects balance within social space. The Sambah movement signifies beginning an action in an orderly and conscious manner; Gantuang Sabalah represents caution; Rantak Tigo symbolizes the human life cycle; Malapia reflects courage to act; Mailak illustrates intelligence in avoiding danger; Kalatiak denotes wise resistance to pressure; and Mangepo represents firm self-defense. Overall, the Kain Dance functions not only as a traditional dance but also as a medium for conveying life values within Minangkabau customary culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the changes in the implementation of the Batombe tradition in the past and present in Nagari Abai, South Solok Regency. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research instruments are the researchers themselves, assisted by writing tools and a camera. Data was collected through literature review, observation, interviews and documentation. The steps to analyse the data are data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results show that the implementation of the Batombe tradition in Nagari Abai, South Solok Regency has experienced changes, which were previously carried out spontaneously and simply without stage arrangements and now appear more modern and organised, complemented by additional musical instruments, performance costumes, and the use of stage arrangements and sound technology. The factors causing changes in the practice of the Batombe tradition include the influence of globalisation on people's entertainment patterns, modernization as an effort for adaptation and preservation, shifts in the social values and functions of Batombe, changes in youth participation patterns, media, and the commercialization of traditional arts. The impacts of changes in the practice of the Batombe tradition consist of positive and negative effects. Positive effects can prolong the life of the tradition through adaptation to contemporary times, while negative effects involve the erosion of customary values and sacredness due to modernization, which means the displacement of customary values and sacredness that form the soul of the Batombe tradition.

Abstract

The research on the band extracurricular activities at SMK Negeri 1 Payakumbuh aims to describe and explain the implementation of the band extracurricular activities at the school. The method used in this research is the descriptive method, which is part of qualitative research methods. The data collection techniques used in this study include observation, interviews, documentation, and conducting a documentation study, the results of which will be explained in the research. The data obtained are analyzed by grouping data, evaluating data, explaining data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research indicate that extracurricular band activities at SMK Negeri 1 Payakumbuh have been conducted regularly since 2023. However, the implementation of these activities has not yet run optimally. This is marked by the low attendance of students and the suboptimal role of the supervisors in providing guidance, technical assistance, and activity evaluations, causing the activities to not follow the planned program. In addition, limited practice time, inadequate rehearsal space, and the divided focus of the supervisors have become obstacles in the implementation of the activities.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of cultural arts learning (drama) using the demonstration method on theater learning in class XI F 5 at SMA Negeri 1 X Koto. The type of research used is quantitative research with an experimental method. The population in this study is all eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 X Koto for the 2024/2025 academic year, totaling 164 students, with a sample of 68 students. The research instruments were the researchers themselves, assisted by writing tools and a camera. Data were collected through observation, tests (pretest and posttest), documentation, and literature study. The data were analyzed using normality tests, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and Mann–Whitney U Test. The research results show that there is a significant difference between students' learning outcomes before and after learning in the experimental class, and there is a significant difference between the posttest results of the control class and the experimental class. Thus, the working hypothesis (H₁) stating that the demonstration method affects the improvement of students' drama learning outcomes can be accepted, while the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected. These findings confirm that the demonstration method is effective for use in teaching drama at the high school level. The improvement in students' learning outcomes in the experimental class is due to the characteristics of the demonstration method, which provides students with the opportunity to directly observe examples of dialogue interpretation, expression, and role-playing techniques. Through observation and hands-on practice, students find it easier to understand the learning material, engage actively, and can develop their drama art skills more optimally. This condition makes the learning process more meaningful and has a positive impact on students' learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of music extracurricular activities using the drill method at SMA Negeri 5 Bukittinggi. This type of research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The research instrument was the researcher themselves, assisted by notes from extracurricular activities and recordings of music practice. Data was collected through observation, interviews, literature study, and documentation. The steps in analyzing the data were data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the drill method in the mixed ensemble music extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 5 Bukittinggi is effective in improving technical skills, fostering collaboration, and shaping students' character. This program serves as a strategic platform for developing musical talent and preserving local culture, although it still requires optimization of practice time and additional facilities for further development. The drill method has proven to improve students' technical skills in ensemble music performance. Students need 3-4 repetitions to master a pattern of play thoroughly. Through systematic repetitive practice, students develop muscle memory that allows them to execute playing techniques automatically. The variation in practice patterns applied by the instructor prevents boredom and increases student enthusiasm, making the drill method effective for mastering ensemble music skills. Music extracurricular activities also develop students' collaborative skills, which are essential in ensemble learning. This activity requires students to work together, listen to each other, and adjust the game with other group members. The peer tutoring system reinforces the value of cooperation by sharing knowledge between senior and junior students, while also building students' self-confidence and commitment to preserving local culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the creative process that occurs at the Galatiak Minang Dance Studio in Padang City. This type of research is qualitative research with a descriptive method. The research instrument is the researcher themselves, assisted by observation, interview, and documentation guidelines. Data collection techniques are carried out by observing practice activities, interviewing the studio leader (Rika Astika) and instructors, and documenting studio activities. Data analysis uses the 4P creativity theory (Person, Press, Process, Product). The results of the study indicate that the creative process at Galatiak Minang Studio is formed through four main aspects: (1) Personal (Person): The figure of the studio leader who has an independent character, is disciplined, and brave in experimenting (trial and error) despite not having a formal higher education in the arts; (2) Supporter (Press): There is strong internal support from the husband and coaches, as well as external support from the enthusiasm of parents who are actively involved in event preparations; (3) Process (Process): Carried out through a disciplined routine training schedule, periodic evaluations through promotion exams, and the courage to independently organize annual competitions; (4) Product (Product): Produces various new dance creations based on tradition such as the Cewang Batok Harvest Dance, Silincah Tabang, and Galatiak Piriang, as well as producing accomplished dancers at both local and regional levels.
