Abstract

This research aims to analyze the potential and challenges of ecotourism development in supporting the preservation of physical environmental aspects in the Tangkahan area, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. The physical environment, such as soil quality, water, vegetation, and natural landscape is the main assets that support the attractiveness of ecotourism. This uses a qualitative descriptive approach through direct observation and semi-structured interviews involving local managers, tourists, and related organizations. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results showed that Tangkahan has great potential as a conservation-based ecotourism destination, with preserved water and air quality and high biodiversity. However, there are significant challenges such as limited infrastructure, low promotion, and environmental threats due to uncontrolled tourism activities. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of an integrated management strategy involving local communities, improved supporting facilities, and environmental education for tourists to ensure the area's sustainability. These findings can be the basis for formulating ecotourism development policies based on physical environment conservation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how community income increases through the role of women in the development of the Bukit Batu Tourism Village. New sources of income, income stability, increased assets, and participation in economic activities were examined. These activities included cultural attractions, managing tourism facilities, and participating in tourism organizations. The study used a descriptive, qualitative approach. Data were collected via observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. There were 78 respondents, including Village Heads, members of Tourism Awareness Groups, tourism facility managers, and MSME actors. All participants were selected through a census. Data were analyzed descriptively using a Likert scale. The findings show that community income increased. Before their involvement in tourism, 44.74% earned IDR 2.5–3 million, and 5.26% earned ≤ IDR 2.5 million. After joining the tourism sector, 39.47% earned IDR 4-5 million, and no one remained in the ≤ IDR 2.5 million category. Women's participation in Cultural Attractions scored 3.16 (Fair). Involvement in Tourism Facilities scored 4.14 (Good), Handwoven Textile SMEs scored 4.10 (Good), Sago Cracker SMEs scored 4.22 (Very Good), and Traditional Cake Businesses scored 3.97 (Good). Community perception showed the greatest income growth in handwoven textile SMEs

Abstract

This study aims to identify and understand the key factors that influence tourists’ intention to revisit a destination. The research was conducted through a literature-based approach using a systematic review of previous studies relevant to tourist behavior and destination loyalty. The analysis applied a qualitative descriptive technique supported by reference management and thematic categorization to ensure accuracy and consistency of findings. The review shows that destination image, unique tourist attractions, service quality, and the availability of adequate facilities play a significant role in shaping tourists’ intention to return. The study concludes that tourists are more likely to revisit destinations that offer positive experiences, comfort, and distinctive value. The contribution of this study lies in providing a synthesized understanding of the dominant factors that consistently appear across various studies, offering a comprehensive perspective for tourism stakeholders. The findings serve as a valuable reference for destination managers and policymakers to design sustainable tourism development strategies that enhance visitor satisfaction and promote long-term loyalty. This study also adds value by highlighting the importance of integrating destination appeal, experience quality, and service improvements to strengthen revisit intention.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the socio-economic characteristics of visitors, the purpose of their visit, the number of visits, and tourist motivation and revisit intention in Bendung Lepen, Yogyakarta. The research used a survey method with a sample size of 60 tourists. The data were analysed using a quantitative descriptive approach. The results of the research show that visitors to Bendung Lepen are, on average, young and adults in the range of 15-42 years with an average length of education of 7-12 years, have no dependents, and an income of IDR 1,000,000 – IDR 2,000,000. Most tourists visit for recreational purposes, with an average frequency of 1-2 visits per year. The motivation for tourists to visit Bendung Lepen is due to the beautiful views (physical motivation), being invited by friends/family (social motivation), and other factors such as proximity, educational activities, and the availability of public facilities. As many as 91.67% of visitors expressed interest in returning because it was conveniently located near their homes, offered affordable recreational activities, was a beautiful and exciting place, and was child-friendly.

Abstract

This research seeks to evaluate the workload of employees in the Reservations Department at Hotel XYZ by reviewing working conditions, length of working hours, and the achievement of performance targets, as well as identifying the optimal number of staff required. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document review to gain a comprehensive understanding of task allocation and the intensity of employee workload. The results indicate that employees experience a significantly heavy workload, particularly during peak seasons, leading to extended working hours and frequent overtime. Fluctuating operational demands and high performance expectations contribute to increased work pressure, potentially affecting productivity and service standards. Based on calculations using the Workload Analysis approach, staffing for the Reservation Manager and Supervisor positions is considered sufficient. However, there is a shortage of two Reservation Agents, which creates excessive responsibilities at the operational level. The analysis is based on 234 effective working days annually and a 40-hour workweek. After accounting for a 30% allowance for non-productive time, the effective working time is 28 hours or 1,680 minutes per week, forming the basis for staffing estimation. These findings emphasize the importance of adjusting workforce allocation, conducting periodic evaluations, offering time management training, and adopting automation systems to enhance operational efficiency. This study’s contribution lies in combining qualitative insights with quantitative workload measurement to support strategic human resource planning in hospitality settings affected by seasonal fluctuations.

Abstract

Culinary tourism anchored in traditional architecture is one of the most dynamically growing segments of the global tourism industry, driven by travellers' deepening appetite for genuine cultural encounters. Yet remarkably little scholarship has examined how a single destination can weave culinary experience, cultural education, and adventure tourism into one coherent offer—particularly within the distinctive spatial and symbolic world of Javanese joglo architecture. This study addresses that gap by analysing tourist activity experience at Joglo Bu Condro Resto & Cafe, Borobudur, a destination that integrates traditional Javanese cuisine, cultural education, and adventure tourism within an ensemble of authentic joglo and limasan buildings more than 150 years old. A mixed-methods design was employed: descriptive-exploratory qualitative inquiry as the primary strand, supplemented by a tourist satisfaction survey. Primary data were generated through in-depth interviews with 25 informants, two sessions of Focus Group Discussion, and 30 days of participant observation; satisfaction data were gathered via a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 120 tourists. Qualitative data were analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman (2014), comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Four dominant themes emerged from the data: (1) traditional culinary authenticity as the principal draw; (2) cultural experience mediated by joglo and limasan architecture; (3) activity diversification through educational and adventure programmes; and (4) integrative management grounded in local wisdom. Theoretically, the findings extend the experience economy framework and the concept of destination authenticity into the understudied context of multi-activity cultural tourism destinations in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines how service quality dimensions—tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy—shape customer loyalty through the mediating role of satisfaction in non-metropolitan hospitality settings. Focusing on four-star hotels in Pangkalpinang, Indonesia, the research addresses the limited empirical evidence from emerging tourism destinations outside metropolitan areas. A quantitative cross-sectional approach was applied using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. Data were collected from 340 hotel guests through structured questionnaires, employing non-probability convenience sampling in leisure and dining areas. Reliability and validity tests were conducted prior to structural analysis. Findings contribute to hospitality theory by confirming the full mediating effect of satisfaction between service quality and loyalty in a non-metropolitan context. For practitioners, the results highlight the strategic importance of enhancing empathy and tangibles to create lasting guest relationships, offering a competitive edge for hotels in emerging tourism markets.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the influence of Online Travel Agent (OTA) on room booking decisions at The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta. The background of this research departs from the increasing role of OTAs in the hospitality industry as one of the main channels of digital marketing that influences consumer behaviour in the booking process. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method on respondents who have booked rooms through OTA. OTA variables are measured through indicators of ease of access, promos or discounts, competitive prices, and customer reviews, which are assumed to influence interest, purchase decisions, and customer satisfaction. The results of simple linear regression analysis showed that OTA had a significant influence on room booking decisions, with a determination coefficient value (R²) of 56.8%. The hypothesis test (t-test) showed significant results (sig. 0.000 < 0.05), which confirmed a strong relationship between OTA use and increased room bookings. These findings highlight the importance of digital marketing communication for hotels in maximizing the potential of OTAs to increase room sales, strengthen competitiveness, and optimize the management of customer information and reviews to improve customer satisfaction. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of digital marketing communication theory, particularly in explaining how OTA platforms function as persuasive communication media that integrate information quality, promotional attractiveness, and electronic word-of-mouth in shaping consumer decision-making in the hospitality sector

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the actual conditions of the 4A aspects (Attraction, Amenity, Accessibility, and Ancillary) at the Mangrove Sungai Bersejarah Ecotourism Destination (MSB) in Kayu Ara Permai Village, Sungai Apit District, Siak Regency. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with MSB administrator, communities, government officials, academics, and tourists, direct observation in the field, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative methods, grouping findings based on each 4A aspects. The results showed that the attraction aspect was the main strength of the destination, characterized by the integrity of the mangrove ecosystem, the beauty of the coastal landscape, the educational and historical value inherent in the area. However, tourist attractions were still dominated by passive natural potential and had not been packaged thematically. The amenity aspect has provided basic facilities such as track path, toilets, prayer rooms, and meeting rooms, but their quality, safety, and cleanliness are still limited. The accessibility aspect shows that the destination can be reached by land route, but it is still constrained by a lack of signposts, limited public transportation, and internal access that is not yet inclusive. Meanwhile, the ancillary aspect is supported by community initiatives through conservation groups, but it is not yet supported by formal tourism institutions, adequate managerial capacity, and cross-sector policy synergy. Overall, the integration of the 4A aspects still needs to be strengthened to support the development of sustainable mangrove ecotourism.

Abstract

This study examines how cost awareness and budget discipline are constructed and implemented within housekeeping operations in a four-star hotel in Jakarta. While budgeting systems and cost control procedures are formally established in most hospitality organizations, limited research has explored how these mechanisms are internalized at the operational level. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with housekeeping managers, supervisors, room attendants, and accounting staff, complemented by document analysis and limited observation. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring patterns related to cost-related behavior and interdepartmental coordination. The findings reveal that cost awareness among housekeeping personnel primarily develops through operational experience and managerial communication rather than structured financial training. Budget discipline is maintained through formal approval procedures and hierarchical supervision; however, monitoring practices tend to be reactive rather than proactive. Interdepartmental collaboration between housekeeping and accounting departments plays a crucial role in reinforcing cost control, although tensions occasionally arise between financial efficiency and service quality objectives. Organizational culture and leadership communication significantly influence the translation of cost awareness into disciplined budgeting behavior, while operational pressures during high occupancy periods may weaken strict adherence to budget limits. The study contributes to hospitality managerial accounting literature by highlighting the behavioral and organizational dimensions of cost control in housekeeping operations. It proposes a contextual model in which cost awareness serves as a cognitive foundation for budget discipline, moderated by organizational culture and interdepartmental collaboration.
