International Journal of Language Pedagogy (IJoLP) is an international peer-reviewed, scientific and open-access journal in language education. The aim is to publish conceptual and research articles that explore the application of any language in teaching and the everyday experience of language in education. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles from academics, researchers, graduate students, and policymakers. All articles should be in English. Abstract

This research aims to analyze the level of students' motivation and the differences in motivation components between male and female students in the academic year 2021. The researcher used the questionnaire as the instrumentation. The researcher used totally sampling to choose the sample. The sample of this research consists of 96 students which are from English education and non-English education study program at Universitas Negeri Padang. In this study, the researcher use quantitative descriptive research as the research design. There were six subcomponents of motivation in this research i.e. intrinsic goal orientation, extrinsic goal orientation, task value, control of learning beliefs, self-efficacy for learning and performance, and task anxiety. The findings of the data analysis showed that students have high motivation levels. Females have a higher motivation level than males. It is shown by the mean score and the standard deviation.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the use of Indonesian metropop novels as material and media in teaching the sociology of literature in universities. The sociology of literature course aims to provide students with an understanding of the relationship between literary works and various social phenomena that occur in society. Through this course, students gain knowledge about the basic concepts of the theory of sociology of literature and various forms of research using the theory of sociology of literature. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive methods. The results of the study show that Indonesian metropop novels describe a socio-cultural phenomenon in society, especially the lifestyle and culture of urban communities who live and live in big cities which are shown through story characters. Thus, Indonesian metropop novels can be used as material and media sociology of literature learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs of students in learning in the speaking for general communication course in order to develop Educational YouTube Videos-based learning media. The integration of YouTube in learning speaking can be a valid resource for teaching lecturers to improve their lessons with various types of content that are interesting and useful and in accordance with the material being taught, and this integration is also expected to motivate students to learn. This study uses a qualitative research design by distributing questionnaires and interviews to find out the problems that occur in the learning process and what students want in improving their speaking skills. As a result, students still experience problems in speaking ability, but the biggest problem students’ face is related to fluency. With regard to the problem of fluency, the results of the interviews show that the desired way of learning is that students want to be more able to practice speaking by having lots of dialogue and direct interaction, displaying unique videos related to the material being taught so that it is not boring and can be understood easily. Easy, using YouTube videos to get used to listening to native speakers speak more. Learning will be more interesting if film media is added, such as identifying clips from a film.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has typically made it easier for information that b received quickly through the uses of devices such as laptops or smartphones that have internet access. New media is gaining more attention in society as many parties have opened their eyes to the importance of new media. New media is not only an alternative field of communication, but also of interest to other fields such as education field. New media also serves as a platform that imparts learning knowledge. TikTok and Instagram have become mediums for users to upload learning videos for their followers. This study was conducted to identify and analyze the perceptions of Academy of Language Studies, UiTM students on Malay language learning in new media. This study focuses on students of LG241, which is the Malay Language Professional Communication program. This study used a questionnaire form instrument distributed to 30 students consisting of 17 female students and 13 male students. This study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory by Davis (1989). This theory emphasizes four factors, namely usability factor, usefulness factor, personal and social network, and relevance. The results of the study found that most students can accept the learning of Malay language in new the media.

Abstract

Mastering essay writing skill is crucial for students who majoring in English Language Department to enhance their language proficiency development, critical thinking, effective communication, and prepares them for academic and professional demands. Meanwhile, many problems still occur in mastering this skill. Hence, the requirement for innovation in teaching essay writing, especially for Essay Writing course is needed. This research used survey method to investigate the practical used of of Essay Writing material-based Project-based Learning through Padlet for teaching Essay Writing course. There were 50 students and 3 lecturers who were involved in the initial investigation of this study. Then, 3 students for limited trials, and 63 students involved in wide trials. The practicality result shows that the teaching material are categorized as Very Practical (85.8%) from teachers’ perspective and Very Practical (84.1%) from students’ perspective. Addressing that explanation about this research finding, it can be concluded that this Instructional Material based PjBL through Padlet is effective to be applied in higher education with independent students to enhance their creative, innovative and critical thinking in expressing ideas about authentic problem in their environment and world- wide environment.

Abstract

This article aimed to explore various metacognitive strategies use and its impact on listening comprehension based on five components or factors of Vandergrift’s metacognitive awareness listening questionnaire (MALQ) at different research areas. The reviewed articles were conducted by using literature review approach in which ten selected articles published from 2016 to 2021 at reputable international journals to be reviewed comprehensively. The selected articles were explored at different learning atmospheres to find out metacognitive strategies use and its direct impact on listening comprehension. The reviewed results were discussed in detail based on various findings of metacognitive strategies components (problem-solving, person knowledge, mental translation, planning and evaluation and directed attention) that highly used by language learners and also its impact during learning listening. In conclusion, metacognitive strategies use on listening comprehension has contributed crucially for L2 and EFL learners to regulate, direct, monitor, and control their cognitive ability during language learning process and this self-regulation based learning has influenced listening learning outcome.

Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of applying tiered assignments in the mixed-ability English as a foreign language classroom. Most of the studies were focused on students’ academic performance. There are still limited studies on the effects of tiered tasks on students’ learning achievement across the students’ levels of readiness since the implementation of tiered assignments in differentiated learning at Kurikulum Merdeka. So, this study was aimed at investigating the effects of using tiered tasks on students’ learning achievement across the students’ readiness levels in the Advanced English class pace F at SMAN 2 Lintau Buo. For the Advanced English class pace F, the tiered instructions were created to correspond with high, intermediate, and low levels of students’ prior knowledge. It involved one class as an experimental group and the other as a controlled group. The experimental class was given tiered tasks, and the other class used universal learning designs. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference in scores between the students who received tiered tasks and those who did not receive tiered assignments. The high readiness students got has higher mean after they were taught by using tiered task. However, the same case cannot be said to the intermediate and low readiness students. Through this research, it became clear how important it is to have a strong understanding of the subject matter and to be aware of a variety of learning activities that can be adapted to the readiness levels of the students’ prior knowledge.
