Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the four skills that must be prepared in the 21st century. The results of observations in one of the leading high schools in Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi, showed that low critical thinking skills were likely caused by using learning models that were not yet relevant. One effort to develop students’ critical thinking skills is through the Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) model based on Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI). This study aims to determine the effect of the SSI-based AIR model on students’ critical thinking skills about environmental pollution materials. This type of research is a quantitative quasi-experimental study with a Pre-test-Post-test control group design. The research sample was selected through cluster random sampling from the population of four Grade X science program classes. After randomization, a research sample of 72 out of 144 students was selected, and they were divided into two groups: the experimental group (SSI-based AIR) and the control group (discovery learning). Experts have validated the research instrument used. The research data analysis used the independent sample t-test or Mann-Whitney test. The results of the Mann-Whitney test analysis showed a significance value (two-tailed) of 0.012 (p 0.05). Based on these results, it can be concluded that applying the SSI-based AIR model has a positive impact on students’ critical thinking skills regarding environmental pollution materials. Teachers can utilize the findings of this study as an alternative to employing innovative methods in their classrooms.

Abstract

Biology practicum is an important part of learning that aims to strengthen conceptual understanding through direct experience. This study aims to identify factors that influence biology practicum activities, especially on the material of plant development structure. This study uses a quantitative method with a survey approach, involving 15 students of the Biology Education study program who have participated in the Plant Development Structure practicum. Data were collected through a closed questionnaire with a Likert scale (1-5) and structured interviews with students and lecturers to obtain more in-depth information. The analysis showed that collaboration skills had the highest average (4.53) and were the dominant factor in supporting the smooth running of the practicum. Student motivation also played a significant role (4.13), indicating high enthusiasm for participating in the practicum. Other factors, such as laboratory facilities, use of practicum tools, and time management, had the same average value (3.80), indicating that these factors were quite supportive but still needed improvement. Meanwhile, understanding practicum procedures had the lowest average (3.53) with the highest standard deviation (0.834), indicating significant variation in student understanding. The interview results revealed that limited laboratory facilities, lack of skills in using laboratory equipment, and difficulties in time management were the main obstacles to laboratory activities. Overall, this study highlights the importance of collaboration skills and motivation in supporting the effectiveness of laboratory work. In addition, improvements in understanding procedures and providing more adequate facilities and tools are needed to improve the quality of learning in biology laboratory activities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of the Blended learning model based on Problem-based Learning (PBL) in Biology learning at the high school level through the meta-analysis method. The research stages used are (1) identifying the type of research and the variables used, (2) recording the average value and standard deviation of the experimental and control groups, and (3) calculating the effect size using the unstandardized mean difference (UMD). Data were obtained from three studies relevant to this topic. The results of the analysis show that the PBL model based on blended learning significantly affects student learning outcomes, especially in improving critical thinking skills, scientific literacy, and problem-solving abilities. This approach involves PBL stages such as problem orientation, independent and group investigations, and reflection, effectively encouraging students to be more active, collaborative, and independent in learning. Overall, this study confirms that combining PBL with blended learning can support more innovative and effective biology learning at the high school level. The results of this study can be used as a reference by teachers to implement PBL learning using blended learning techniques.

Abstract

Stomata are important structures on the leaf surface that function to regulate gas exchange and water loss in plants. Students often experience misconceptions about the relationship between plant structure and function because the learning resources used tend to be text-based without the support of contextual examples or direct observation. This study aims to identify the types of stomata in three types of shade trees within the UIN Raden Mas Said environment, serving as contextual learning resources for plant structure and development. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The materials used include ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa), pulai leaves (Alstonia scholaris), and breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis), as well as distilled water. Observations were made under a light microscope at 100× and 400× magnification. The observation data were analysed descriptively by comparing the characteristics of the stomata found in the three species with those of stomata types in the literature. Observations show that ketapang (Terminalia catappa) and breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) leaves have anomocytic stomata, while pulai (Alstonia scholaris) leaves have anisocytic stomata. These findings provide stomatal morphology data that can be used as locally based teaching materials to enhance students' connections between botanical concepts and their environment.
