Abstract

Social media has become an influential arena for expressing critical perspectives and resistance toward socio-political challenges. Its role in accelerating the circulation of information and shaping public responses is particularly evident in political contexts. This study investigates the implicit and explicit meanings conveyed in Instagram posts from the @serikatpekerjakampus account, employing a pragmatic discourse framework to examine how meanings are constructed and communicated. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research identifies speech acts and implicatures that appear within the multimodal discourse of the posts. The findings reveal that expressive illocutionary acts and imperative implicatures dominate communication strategies. These results indicate that while textual and visual elements apply different modes of meaning-making, they converge toward the same communicative objectives. The multimodal analysis further demonstrates that symbols, idioms, and images serve as semiotic resources of the protests against government policies and reinforce the posts’ critical stance. The implications of these findings highlight Instagram as a strategic platform for fostering critical discourse with strong pragmatic effects on shaping public opinion. In addition, this research positions social media as a significant subject of inquiry within critical linguistics and multimodal studies. Ultimately, the presence of digital criticism illustrates the tangible impact of social media practices on policy-making processes in contemporary socio-political landscapes.

Abstract

This study is driven by the escalating global ecological crisis resulting from natural resource exploitation and industrialization, alongside prevailing perceptions that literary studies lack relevance in addressing real-world challenges, particularly environmental issues. To emphasize the contribution of literature in building ecological awareness, this study analyzes the three short stories by Yanusa Nugroho, namely Bukit Mawar, Blarak, and Nyanyian Klaras, which describe the interaction between humans and nature as well as criticism of environmental damage. The objective of this study is to reveal the representation of the ecological crises and the messages of environmental conservation in the three short stories by Yanusa Nugroho. This study applies Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism theory, which highlights major themes such as wilderness, apocalypse, pastoral, dwelling, and The Earth, with a qualitative descriptive method based on text analysis. Data was obtained through literature study and analyzed to identify symbols, narratives, and local wisdom that reflect the relationship between humans and nature. The results show that the ecological crisis is not only physical damage, but also involves social and cultural dimensions. The three short stories emphasize the importance of ecological ethics by caring for the landscape, maintaining the natural cycle, and respecting the earth as a life system.

Abstract

This article examines the dignity of women in the Indonesian tradition of elopement—melayoken (Using/Osing) and mangalua (Batak Toba)—as represented in two novels: Nawi Cinta Inah, written by Antariksawan Jusuf and Hani Z Noor, and Mangalua by Idris Pasaribu. Using multicultural feminism, this study reads the text as a cultural artifact shaped by—and simultaneously shaping—local social structures. Methodologically, close reading is combined with hermeneutic procedures and triangulated with ethnographic findings on Using and Batak customs. Mohanty's critique of feminist universalism highlights contextualized everyday practices of resistance; Narayan's notion of “tradition as negotiation” and warnings against “death by culture” guide an empathetic reading of agency within the customary framework. The findings demonstrate that elopement is not reduced to oppression or absolute freedom; it functions as an arena of negotiation where women articulate choice and responsibility, then seek legitimacy through customary reconciliation (colok/Using; uhum/Batak). This study contributes a culturally sensitive feminist reading of Indonesian literature and suggests an expansion of comparative studies to other Nusantara traditions as well as studies of reader reception.

Abstract

This study investigates how the evaluative system of Appraisal Theory is applied to analyse offensive language within the digital discourse of religious moderation. It addresses the research gap in previous studies that have not systematically linked linguistic evaluation with religion based hate speech. The data consist of social media comments containing violations of religious moderation principles and were analysed qualitatively using the frameworks of offensive language (Zhao and Hovy 2020), Appraisal Theory (Martin and White 2005), and the moderation framework of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag 2019). The findings identify four key types of offensive expression that constitute the Radical Appraisal Typology namely Direct Emotional Offense, Implicit Moral Offense, Cultural Appreciation Offense, and Closed Engagement Offense. These categories represent an evaluative spectrum ranging from overt emotional aggression to implicit moral and ideological exclusion. Theoretically, the study extends the application of Appraisal Theory to the domain of religion based hate speech by revealing how intensification and mitigation mechanisms shape the evaluative force of language. Practically, it underscores the importance of linguistic awareness as a foundation for promoting religious moderation, tolerance, and national cohesion in digital public discourse.

Abstract

Investigations into the contributions of women in safeguarding indigenous oral traditions, especially within sacred ceremonies, remain comparatively scarce. This investigation underscores women's agency as cultural stewards in the Ngasa Gandoang Mountain Alms ritual in Salem, Brebes, Central Java, which is deeply intertwined with local ecospirituality. Employing the theoretical lenses of gender agency and oral tradition, this study seeks to examine women's involvement in sustaining and reproducing ritual significance, investigate the elements that empower women to attain prominence in a cultural-religious domain typically dominated by men, and assess women's approaches in upholding the endurance of tradition amid currents of societal transformation and modernization. The methodology incorporates feminist ethnography, encompassing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and source triangulation. Findings indicate that women occupy a pivotal role in upholding spiritual principles, fostering collective remembrance, directing ritual proceedings, and deciphering symbolic interpretations. The originality of this research resides in the reinterpretation of Ngasa Gandoang Mountain Alms through a gender lens that portrays women as proactive contributors to informal cultural transmission. The study's implications encompass the necessity for women's integration into cultural conservation initiatives, the formulation of role-oriented educational and archival strategies, the incorporation of gender viewpoints in sustainable tourism, and avenues for additional inquiries to investigate analogous dynamics in diverse regions or modernization contexts.

Abstract

While collocation research has been approached from various semantic viewpoints, it has yet to thoroughly explore the intricate meaning relationships between words within collocations. This study investigates adjective-noun collocations in the Batak Toba language through cognitive semantic analysis. By employing cognitive semantics, the study explores the meanings of nouns and adjectives in relation to frames, domains, and conceptual blending. Song lyrics serve as the data source for analysis, providing a rich and culturally significant context for examining language use. Employing domain theory, frame theory, and conceptual integration theory, the data underwent rigorous examination. The results indicate that noun and adjective collocations are formed based on the compatibility between the noun and the adjective. The characteristics of collocations, for both nouns and adjectives, can be interpreted from the combinations of symbols that arise from phonological sequences within the constructional scheme. This research identifies three types of collocations: compositional collocations, limited compositional collocations, and non-compositional collocations. Furthermore, semantic frames shed light on the cultural beliefs embedded within the meanings of collocations in Batak Toba. These frames reveal how cultural contexts influence the interpretation and usage of collocations, demonstrating the intricate connection between language and culture. Moreover, conceptual integration clarifies the process of collocation formation and meaning through the interaction of input space 1, input space 2, generic space, and blended space. This interaction highlights the dynamic and creative aspects of language use among Batak Toba speakers. The study finds that speakers of the Batak Toba language demonstrate strong cognitive abilities in creating collocations, showcasing their linguistic creativity and cognitive flexibility. This research not only contributes to the understanding of collocation in the Batak Toba language but also underscores the importance of cognitive semantics in uncovering the deeper meaning relationships in language.

Abstract

Translating song lyrics which are intended to be sung is challenging, and translators need to strive for a rendering that can achieve this goal. This study examined the method and the quality of the Indonesian translation of “We Don’t Talk about Bruno”, a popular song from Disney’s Encanto. It incorporated Newmark’s theory on translation methods and translation procedures in identifying the method used to render the song lyrics, and Low’s Pentathlon Principle in assessing the quality of the translation. The study was qualitative, where the song was analyzed line by line, first to determine the procedures, and second with the help of participants by means of interview to determine the quality. Thereafter the method and the overall quality were determined. The result showed the communicative method as the translation method, with preference for multi-procedures per line mainly of literal, modulation, and reduction procedures. The quality of the rendering was standard, with high preference towards Singability, Naturalness, and Rhythm. This exhibited how translators look for fitting the target text to its purpose of being singable, and reinforced the notion of compensating things such as the sense and rhyming pairs of the song in order to achieve the goal.

Abstract

The exploration of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) application particularly the ideational metafunction in spoken text like simultaneous interpreting within a reflective narrative text of legal and security context, focusing on the realization of mental and material processes has been limited to access. This study compares interpreting performance of 3 novices and 3 professional interpreters as they interpret an audio recording from Indonesian to English discussing border issues to investigate the realization of mental and material processes. Through qualitative descriptive approach of the interpreted texts, the study examines how each group constructs experiential meaning, especially in rendering cognitive (mental) and action-oriented (material) processes. Results indicate that novice and professional interpreters used material and mental processes in similar proportions, yet the quality of their realizations varied, with professionals demonstrating more accurate and consistent rendering. Novice interpreters, however, tend to generalize or omit key elements, particularly in complex mental processes, leading to reduced accuracy in meaning transfer. These differences highlight the impact of interpreter experience on the quality of simultaneous interpreting in border reflective narrative contexts containing speaker’s reflection and experience. The findings underscore the value of SFL as an analytical framework in interpreter training and assessment, especially in enhancing sensitivity to ideational meaning within reflective narrative texts.
