JSE: Journal of Science and Education is to provide a forum for the sharing, dissemination and discussion of research, experience and perspectives across a wide range of education, teaching, development, instruction, evaluation and assessment, educational media, educational projects and innovations, learning methodologies and new technologies in science education implemented in primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Criteria for publication in this journal are novelty, quality and general interest in experimental and theoretical science education.Articles are welcome that deal with theoretical analysis, meta-analysis reviews, and results of research or empirical studies from all aspects in science education implemented in primary education, secondary education, and tertiary education. Experimental papers are supposed to be brought into relation with theory, and theoretical papers should be connected to present or future experiments. Manuscripts that implement routine use or minor extensions or modifications of established and/or published experimental and theoretical methodologies are appropriate if they report novel results for an important problem of high interest and/or if they provide significant new insights.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation of Environment-Based Science Education (EBSE) to enhance environmental awareness in high schools. With mounting concerns over environmental degradation and increasing climate change, educating future generations about environmental issues and instilling a sense of responsibility towards the environment has become crucial. High schools serve as pivotal platforms for shaping students' attitudes towards the environment, making them ideal for EBSE implementation. The research methodology utilizes a narrative literature review approach, employing Google Scholar to identify relevant articles published between 2020 and 2024. Selection criteria include relevance to high school science education, a focus on environmental education, and its impact on environmental awareness. Findings indicate that EBSE is effective in improving environmental awareness, fostering environmental concern, enhancing academic performance, and scientific process skills. EBSE has been successfully integrated into high school science subjects. Further development of EBSE in high schools, including within science subjects and educational levels, is necessary. The use of innovative teaching methods and educational resources should be encouraged to cultivate environmental awareness from early childhood to adulthood. Integrating EBSE into the curriculum can empower students to proactively address environmental challenges.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas penggunaan media pembelajaran berbasis Augmented Reality (AR) dalam meningkatkan pemahaman konsep sel makhluk hidup, motivasi belajar, dan keterlibatan siswa dalam pembelajaran Biologi. Metode penelitian menggunakan eksperimen dengan desain pretest-posttest control group. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kelas yang menggunakan AR memiliki peningkatan pemahaman konsep yang signifikan dibandingkan kelas kontrol (p < 0.05), dengan rata-rata nilai posttest lebih tinggi (85.67 vs. 70.12). Respon siswa terhadap AR sangat positif, dengan 85% merasa lebih termotivasi dan 78% lebih mudah memahami materi. Observasi menunjukkan peningkatan keterlibatan siswa dalam diskusi dan eksplorasi materi. Dengan demikian, Augmented Reality terbukti sebagai media pembelajaran yang efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman konsep akademik, motivasi, dan interaksi siswa. Implementasi AR dalam pendidikan dapat menjadi alternatif inovatif untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran, terutama dalam materi yang kompleks seperti Biologi.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas pemanfaatan robotika untuk meningkatkan minat belajar sains pada anak sekolah. Robotika memungkinkan pembelajaran yang lebih interaktif, aplikatif, dan menarik, sehingga mampu meningkatkan motivasi serta pemahaman siswa terhadap konsep sains. Studi ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis literatur untuk mengeksplorasi manfaat, implementasi, serta tantangan dalam penerapan robotika di pendidikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa robotika dapat meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa, mengembangkan keterampilan abad ke-21, serta memperkuat pemahaman konsep STEM. Namun, hambatan seperti keterbatasan biaya, kesiapan guru, dan akses teknologi masih menjadi tantangan utama. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan dukungan dari sekolah, pelatihan bagi guru, serta kebijakan pendidikan yang mendukung integrasi robotika dalam kurikulum. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa pendekatan berbasis teknologi, termasuk robotika, dapat menjadi strategi inovatif dalam meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran sains di sekolah.

Abstract

Pembelajaran sains di tingkat pendidikan dasar dan menengah memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk kemampuan berpikir kritis, logis, dan sistematis siswa terhadap fenomena alam yang terjadi di sekitar mereka. Namun, metode pembelajaran konvensional yang cenderung abstrak dan berpusat pada guru seringkali membuat siswa kesulitan memahami konsep-konsep sains secara mendalam. Untuk mengatasi hal ini, pembelajaran luar ruang (outdoor learning) menjadi pendekatan yang relevan dan efektif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi kontribusi kegiatan pembelajaran luar ruang terhadap pemahaman konsep sains siswa. Melalui kegiatan seperti kunjungan ke taman, kebun, atau museum sains, siswa dapat mengaitkan teori dengan pengalaman langsung, memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang konsep ilmiah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi literatur untuk menganalisis berbagai penelitian terdahulu terkait pembelajaran luar ruang dan dampaknya terhadap pemahaman sains. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran luar ruang mampu meningkatkan pemahaman siswa, menumbuhkan rasa ingin tahu, serta mengembangkan sikap ilmiah yang lebih positif. Namun, pelaksanaan pembelajaran luar ruang harus direncanakan dengan matang, termasuk pengelolaan sumber daya, penyesuaian kompetensi, dan evaluasi yang tepat. Dukungan dari sekolah dan orang tua sangat penting untuk memastikan kelancaran dan keberhasilan kegiatan ini. Pembelajaran luar ruang terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman dan minat siswa terhadap sains secara menyeluruh

Abstract

Pengembangan e-modul interaktif berbasis Android memberikan manfaat signifikan dalam pembelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (IPA) di tingkat SMP. E-modul ini membantu siswa memahami konsep-konsep abstrak secara menarik dan interaktif melalui fitur animasi, video, simulasi, dan kuis. Selain itu, e-modul berbasis Android memungkinkan pembelajaran fleksibel yang dapat diakses kapan saja dan di mana saja, sehingga meningkatkan partisipasi aktif siswa dan mendukung pengembangan keterampilan abad 21 seperti berpikir kritis, kolaborasi, dan kreativitas. Namun, implementasi e-modul ini menghadapi tantangan terkait akses internet terbatas dan keterampilan teknologi guru. Untuk mengatasi kendala tersebut, pelatihan guru dan pengembangan konten offline menjadi solusi yang efektif. Kolaborasi antara pengembang e-modul dan guru juga sangat penting untuk merancang e-modul yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa dan kurikulum yang berlaku, guna meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran secara keseluruhan.

Abstract

This research delves into the pivotal role of teacher educational communication in shaping the learning environment and influencing student learning motivation. Through a descriptive research approach employing qualitative methods, observations, interviews, and documentation were utilized for data collection. The results indicate that teachers significantly influence student learning motivation through their presence, guidance, and encouragement, fostering conducive learning atmospheres. Effective communication strategies tailored to individual student needs, incorporating interactive techniques, and integrating technology were found to enhance student engagement and interest in learning. Moreover, collaborative efforts between teachers, parents, and the broader community contribute to a supportive learning environment, nurturing students' academic and personal growth. The study underscores the importance of teacher educational communication in shaping the learning environment, fostering positive relationships, and motivating students to achieve their full potential, thereby empowering them to succeed academically and thrive personally.

Abstract

Education plays a vital role in the progress of a country, with science learning at the secondary school level being the key to developing creative and adaptive human resources to global developments. However, the implementation of science learning in schools still faces various challenges, such as limited resources, conventional methods, and lack of technology utilization. To overcome this, innovation in teaching methods and continuous training for educators are important. One approach that has proven effective is Lesson Study, which emphasizes collaboration between teachers in planning, implementing, and reflecting on learning. This approach helps improve student understanding through more structured and interactive learning and develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Although it has been implemented in various countries, including Indonesia, the implementation of Lesson Study still faces obstacles, such as time constraints and lack of institutional support. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Lesson Study in improving the quality of science learning in secondary schools using the literature review method. The data sources used come from research journals, scientific articles, research reports, and dissertations related to Lesson Study and science learning. Data analysis was carried out descriptively-qualitatively with a thematic synthesis approach to identify patterns and relationships between sources. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of Lesson Study is effective in improving the quality of science learning, with increased student understanding and teacher competence in designing and evaluating learning. However, the success of implementing this model depends on institutional support, including flexible time scheduling and policies that support collaboration between teachers. This study is expected to provide a comprehensive picture of the implementation of Lesson Study and recommendations for optimizing its implementation in improving the quality of science education in secondary schools

Abstract

This study explores the strategic role of environmental-based education in enhancing students' ecological awareness. The implementation of this education involves integrating environmental concepts into both formal curricula and non-formal activities, utilizing an experiential learning approach. Through active participation in hands-on activities such as waste management, tree planting, and environmental projects, students develop ecological literacy comprising knowledge, awareness, and real-world actions to preserve the environment.The positive impacts of environmental education are evident in the increased understanding of environmental issues and the cultivation of critical thinking and pro-environmental behavior in daily life. However, challenges remain, such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and low community involvement. Proposed solutions include enhancing teacher capacity, providing necessary resources, fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration, running public awareness campaigns, and integrating environmental education into national policies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing the Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) cooperative learning model on social skills and understanding of science concepts at the elementary school level. The IOC model encourages student interaction through a method of moving and discussing in groups, which can enhance communication, collaboration, and understanding of the material. The approach used is a literature study, analyzing previous research findings related to the application of the IOC model in learning. The analysis results indicate that the application of the IOC model is effective in improving students' social skills, such as communication, teamwork, and sharing understanding with classmates. This model also successfully enhances students' understanding of science concepts through engaging and collaborative discussion activities. However, the IOC model faces challenges such as time management and limitations of classroom facilities, which may impact its implementation. Therefore, proper planning, teacher training, and the provision of supporting resources and facilities are essential for the success of this model. Overall, the implementation of the Inside-Outside Circle learning model holds significant potential to improve the quality of education at the elementary school level, particularly in developing social skills and understanding science concepts, with special attention to the practical aspects that need to be adapted in the field

Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality. The integration of ESD into science curricula is essential as science education provides the foundation for understanding natural phenomena and the relationship between humans and the environment. This paper explores the significance of incorporating ESD into science education in Indonesia, highlighting its potential to raise environmental awareness and foster sustainable behaviors from an early age. Despite its global recognition, the implementation of ESD in Indonesia faces several challenges, including the preparedness of educators, limited resources, and a lack of conceptual understanding of ESD. Effective strategies such as teacher training, development of sustainability-based teaching materials, and collaboration between schools, communities, and the private sector are crucial for overcoming these obstacles. Furthermore, adopting interdisciplinary and project-based learning approaches can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for addressing sustainability issues. The successful integration of ESD in science education is expected to produce a generation of students who are not only knowledgeable about sustainability but also actively contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Through this approach, ESD becomes a transformative tool that shapes students' character as responsible agents of change, fostering a sustainable future.
