Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the use of sarcasm on communication misunderstandings in college students. Sarcasm is a form of communication that contains satire or irony, and often causes ambiguity of meaning, so it has the potential to cause misunderstanding in the communication process. This research uses a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto method. The research subjects were students of the Buddhist Communication Science Study Program of STIAB Jinarakkhita Lampung TA. 2024-2025 as many as 49 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires, then analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, and simple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS 16.0. The results showed that sarcasm had a significant effect on communication misunderstanding, with a coefficient of determination (R Square) of 0.487 or 48.7%. This means that 48.7% of students' communication misunderstanding is influenced by the use of sarcasm. This finding shows that the higher the intensity of sarcasm use, the greater the potential for communication misunderstanding. Therefore, it is important for students to pay more attention to the way they communicate so that the messages conveyed do not cause the wrong interpretation.

Abstract

Writing skills are a fundamental component of academic and professional success, enabling effective communication, critical thinking, and knowledge construction. Despite their significance, many students, particularly those learning English as a second or foreign language, face challenges in developing proficient writing abilities. These difficulties are often compounded by individual differences, including personality traits such as introversion and extroversion. While previous studies have explored various pedagogical approaches to enhance writing skills, limited research has focused on how these methods interact with students’ personality types, especially within the context of higher education. This study aims to investigate how a deep learning approach, a pedagogy emphasizing meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning supports and enhances the writing performance of extroverted students compared to introverted ones. The research was conducted with 23 second-semester students from the Buddhist Communication Science Department at Jinarakkhita Buddhist College in Lampung, Indonesia. A mixed-method design was employed, combining pre- and post-writing tests scored using Heaton’s rubric with interviews and personality assessments based on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The findings revealed that the most participants were extroverts, and they demonstrated a significant improvement in overall writing ability after the intervention, particularly in organization and content development. Paired samples t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores, indicating the effectiveness of the deep learning strategy for extroverted learners. These results suggest that personality-informed instructional strategies can optimize writing instruction, especially for extroverted students who benefit from interactive and collaborative learning environments. The study contributes to the growing body of research on personalized pedagogy and highlights the importance of aligning teaching methods with students’ psychological profiles to maximize learning outcomes.

Abstract

In the context of globalization, societies are increasingly diverse in culture, religion, language, and values. These differences can enrich interactions but also lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This study explores how communication can promote tolerance and unity in heterogeneous communities. A qualitative approach with a systematic literature review was used to analyze studies published in the last decade. The review identifies several key communication strategies: open dialogue, mutual listening, inclusive language, intercultural understanding, and responsible use of media. Empathic communication, respect for differing perspectives, and constructive conflict resolution also play crucial roles in fostering social cohesion. The findings suggest that communication is not only a means of sharing information, but a social tool for building trust, reducing prejudice, and strengthening unity. The study recommends collaboration among individuals, communities, and institutions to support inclusive and empathetic communication. These efforts are essential for developing policies, education systems, and media content that reflect and reinforce values of tolerance in diverse societies.

Abstract

This research examines the role of social media on the self-identity development of university students in the digital era. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research investigates how social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Facebook shape students’ self-expression and identity construction. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews and a comprehensive literature review. The research reveals that social media provides a space for university students to experiment with self-identity outside of traditional social norms. However, it also poses challenges, such as social pressure and a potential gap between digital and real identities. Key findings suggest that social media can have both positive and negative impacts on students' identity formation. On the one hand, social media enables the development of self-confidence; on the other hand, it can cause social anxiety due to constant comparison with others. The research highlights the importance of wise use of social media in the context of identity formation, taking into account the psychological and social impacts that may arise.

Abstract

Digital technology has transformed patterns of environmental communication and positioned photography as a strategic medium for fostering ecological awareness. In the context of tin mining in Bangka Belitung, the role of local photographers deserves scholarly attention because their work demonstrates that photography functions not merely as a visual product but also as a form of environmental advocacy. This study aims to identify the roles of local photographers in constructing ecophotographic narratives for post-mining nature conservation campaigns. It employs a descriptive qualitative method, supported by Strauss and Corbin’s analytical approach and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, to examine how ecological meanings are constructed, negotiated, and communicated to audiences. The findings reveal four interrelated roles performed by local photographers. First, they act as designers of visual narratives by combining images of ecological wounds with hopes for environmental recovery through local symbols, such as kolong biru, post-mining old towns, birds, and former mining landscapes. Second, they serve as mediators between photographic subjects and wider audiences by using diverse Instagram content to expand the circulation of ecological messages. Third, they embody the values of visual honesty, empathy toward humans and nature, and persuasive criticism by aestheticizing environmental damage so that ecological concerns can be more easily understood by digital audiences. Fourth, they function as local storytellers who present “voices from within” through varied visual approaches, despite resistance from miners. Overall, these roles show that local photographers contribute significantly to shaping environmental awareness and encouraging public reflection on post-mining landscapes in Bangka Belitung.

Abstract

Films have evolved beyond entertainment into spaces where audiences construct and negotiate meanings about contemporary social issues. This study examines how young women interpret the representation of infidelity in the film through Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study combines in-depth interviews with netnographic observation to capture both individual interpretations andaudi ence interactions within digital environments. A key novelty of this study lies in integrating in-depth interviews and netnographic observation, enabling audience reception to be examined across both personal interpretations and participatory digital discussions. Eight female participants aged 18–25 years who had watched the film and actively used social media were selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Hall’s encoding–decoding framework by classifying audience interpretations into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional reading positions. The findings indicate that most participants occupied the dominant reading position by accepting the film’s portrayal of infidelity as a violation of trust, commitment, and family values, while a smaller number demonstrated negotiated readings by incorporating personal experiences and social contexts into their interpretations. No oppositional reading was identified, suggesting a strong alignment between the film’s preferred meanings and participant’s moral and cultural values. The study contributes to audience reception research by demonstrating how media meanings are shaped through the interaction of cultural values, personal experiences, and participatory digital practices, while extending Hall’s Reception Theory to contemporary digital communication environments.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health challenge that requires effective collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, and communities. To strengthen stunting prevention, the Indonesian government introduced the Foster Parent Movement for Stunting Prevention (Genting), which encourages cross-sector stakeholder participation in supporting families at risk of stunting. This study aims to analyze the organizational communication model employed by local government agencies in implementing the Genting Program in Pringsewu Regency. This study adopted a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five key informants, including Family Planning Counselors, local government officials, sub-district and village representatives, and program stakeholders. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis model. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Genting Program relies on both formal and informal communication operating vertically and horizontally across organizational levels. Family Planning Counselors act as key communicators linking local government agencies, village administrations, private-sector partners, and communities. Informal communication proved more effective than formal coordination in fostering mutual understanding, building trust, and encouraging stakeholder participation as foster parents. However, communication barriers remain due to different perceptions regarding funding responsibilities and forms of stakeholder involvement. This study contributes to organizational communication literature by demonstrating that informal communication functions as an adaptive feedback mechanism that strengthens inter-organizational collaboration, thereby extending Katz and Kahn's Open Systems Theory. The findings also provide practical recommendations for integrating formal coordination with interpersonal communication strategies to enhance stakeholder engagement and improve local stunting prevention programs.

Abstract

Social harmony is essential for maintaining cohesion and sustainable relationships within religious communities. Although religious communication is widely recognized as an important factor in promoting harmonious social interactions, the mechanisms through which it influences social harmony remain insufficiently explored, particularly in Buddhist communities. This study investigates the influence of religious communication on social harmony by examining the mediating role of understanding Buddhist teachings. An explanatory quantitative research design was employed using a questionnaire-based survey, and the data were analyzed using path analysis. The findings reveal that religious communication enhances understanding of Buddhist teachings, which subsequently strengthens social harmony. Religious communication also exerts a direct positive influence on harmonious social relationships, while understanding of Buddhist teachings serves as a significant mediating mechanism linking communication with social harmony. These findings demonstrate that effective religious communication facilitates the internalization of Buddhist values, fostering greater tolerance, solidarity, and cooperation within the community. This study contributes to the literature on religious communication by providing empirical evidence of the mediating role of doctrinal understanding in promoting social harmony and offers practical implications for strengthening communication strategies within Buddhist religious institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of ChatGPT usage on students' digital communication competence. Despite the increasing adoption of ChatGPT in higher education, empirical studies examining its influence on students' digital communication competence remain limited. A quantitative survey approach was employed involving eighth-semester students at STIAB Jinarakkhita Lampung. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics and simple linear regression using SPSS. Digital communication competence was measured through students' ability to access, evaluate, and communicate information effectively and ethically in digital environments. The findings reveal that ChatGPT usage has a positive and significant influence on students' digital communication competence. Students who use ChatGPT more effectively tend to demonstrate better abilities in information processing, digital message construction, and ethical digital communication. This study concludes that ChatGPT can serve as a valuable educational tool for strengthening students' digital communication competence when integrated responsibly into higher education. The findings contribute to the growing literature on AI-assisted learning and provide practical implications for the effective integration of generative AI in higher education.
