Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the lack of morality in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as seen from the social and economic context, the morals of the main characters, the theme of betrayal and disappointment, moral symbolism, and modern relevance. The social and economic context highlights the background of the Jazz Age and the American Dream and the impact of materialism on the behavior and values of society at that time. The morals of the main characters: Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan are described in detail about their lack of morality. The theme of betrayal and disillusionment which is a common topic in the novel exposes the relationships between characters and moral betrayal, Gatsby's disillusionment with the idealism of love, and society's reaction to moral offences. Moral symbolism examines the symbol of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's eyes as a representation of moral surveillance and the colors and visual elements depicting moral helplessness. Finally, modern relevance provides an overview of how the themes of morality in the novel are still relevant to modern society. The results of this analysis are presented to provide new insights into how the Jazz Age and the idea of the American Dream affect aspects of morality.

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of local color and American slavery in Mark Twin's ‘The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn’. The novel uses local color to create a real picture of life in the American South in the 19th century, through the use of local dialects, descriptions of scenery and environments, and local community habits. Huck Finn, as the main character in the novel, is young and innocent, and he does not enslave black people, which in 19th century South America still existed. His friendship with Jim, a slave trying to escape from being caught by slave hunters, is central to the story and social issues. Jim is not only Huck's friend and protector, but also a character who represents the injustice experienced by slaves. By combining the discussion of local color and American slavery, we as readers discover and reflect on the social and moral values of the time.

Abstract This research explores the role of Muslim literature in reflecting and responding to the complexities of identity in the modern world. In her research, the researcher uses the theoretical frameworks of Stuart Hall and Homi K. Bhabha to analyze how identities are shaped through cultural interactions and individual experiences. The research focuses on analyzing texts from several Muslim literary works such as those of Yasmina Khadra, Tariq Ali, and Amin Maalouf. The results show that Muslim identity is a constantly changing entity in the context of globalization and cultural interaction, so Muslim literature can provide an alternative in responding to the complexity of identity in the modern world. Abstract

This paper explores the enduring theme of Paranoia in Thomas Pynchon’s novel “The Crying of Lot 49,” with a particular emphasis on the protagonist, Oedipa Maas. In the story, Paranoia arises as a reaction to the intricate and uncertain nature of the modern world portrayed by Pynchon. Through symbols such as the muted post horn and Tristero’s conspiratorial network, Oedipa is caught up in a never-ending search for meaning. As Oedipa delves deeper into her investigation, she experiences a mental crisis characterized by paranoia and disorientation. The more Oedipa gathers information about Tristero, the higher her paranoid levels become. She feels that everything she sees, smells, dreams and remembers will be interwoven into Tristero. This creates a tension between what is real and what is imagined. She wonders if all these clues really exist or are just imaginary. This creates a strong internal debate, making it difficult for her to believe in anything. With this discussion of paranoia in the novel, we as readers can explore how paranoia not only affects Oedipa’s perception of the world around her, but also illustrates Pynchon’s critique of social and political structures that oppress individuals.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to explore color symbolism and the concept of the American Dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Using an in-depth analytical approach, this study reveals the symbolic meanings of colors such as green, white, yellow, red, blue, and grey used by Fitzgerald to reinforce the novel's main themes, including hope, luxury, moral emptiness, and the destruction of dreams. In addition, this study also highlights how the term American Dream reflects the ambition, love, and moral downfall of the Jazz Age. Symbolism in the novel, such as the green light, Valley of Ashes, and Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's eyes, show how Fitzgerald utilizes narrative elements to convey social criticism of the post-World War I society. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between color symbolism and the theme of the American Dream in the social and cultural context of its time. Keywords: F. Scott Fitsgerald, Symbolism, American Dream, Symbolic Meaning, Colors. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi simbolisme warna dan konsep American Dream dalam novel The Great Gatsby karya F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This study discusses the use of irony in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, illustrating how Orwell engages various forms of irony to critique politics and human nature. Through three types of irony, specifically verbal, dramatic, and situational irony. The novel exposes the hypocrisy and corruption of the pigs, particularly in their manipulation of language and principles. Verbal irony that shows the exaggerated praises that showered the pigs. Also, the transformation of the pigs into a tyrant is shown as a powerful example of situational irony, while the animal’s blind acceptance of the pigs leadership deepens the dramatic irony, as the reader understands the truth behind the facade. This study also explores how the novel uses irony to critique the cynical nature of power and oppression. The research method of this study is a descriptive qualitative method. This data was obtained from the novel as the main source and research journals as supporting theories for this research.

Abstract

Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn serves as a profound critique of the class and racial inequalities entrenched in 19th-century American society. Through the characters of Huck Finn, a poor white boy, and Jim, an escaped slave, Twain illuminates the struggles faced by those at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Jim's journey for freedom symbolizes the broader fight against systemic injustice that characterized his time. As a black man in a society that dehumanizes him, Jim embodies the plight of individuals denied their basic rights and dignity. His aspirations for family, financial stability, and freedom from discrimination reflect a natural right to liberty that society systematically denies him. Huck's moral development is central to the narrative, as he grapples with societal norms that dictate racial superiority and class distinctions. Initially conditioned by the prejudices of his environment, Huck experiences a transformation as he befriends Jim. This relationship challenges his ingrained beliefs and compels him to confront the hypocrisy of a society that claims to be civilized while perpetuating slavery and inequality [5][7]. Huck's internal conflict highlights the tension between societal expectations and personal conscience, ultimately leading him to reject social hierarchies in favor of empathy and human connection. Twain's portrayal of these characters not only critiques institutional racism but also underscores the necessity of personal integrity in the quest for equality. The novel advocates for a moral awakening that transcends class and race, suggesting that true freedom and dignity can only be achieved through compassion and the rejection of oppressive societal constructs [6][8]. In this way, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains a powerful commentary on the enduring issues of inequality and class struggle.
