Abstract

The extension activities carried out in Hukurila Village, South Leitimur Sub-district, Ambon City, aimed to improve fishermen’s knowledge and skills regarding marketing strategies for fishery products in Hukurila Village, in order to resolve the marketing issues faced by the fishermen’s group. The methods employed included extension sessions, focus group discussions (FGDs) and evaluations to ensure the programme’s sustainability. The results of the evaluation of the outreach activities indicate that this Community Service (PkM) initiative has successfully enhanced fishermen’s knowledge and capabilities in marketing fishery products. Furthermore, the results of the FGDs indicate that marketing development efforts through the diversification of processed products, the utilisation of digital technology, and collaboration with the government and relevant institutions will present significant opportunities for strengthening fishermen’s capacity and improving supporting facilities. This will enable more efficient marketing of fishery products, enhance competitiveness, and expand markets, thereby supporting the welfare of the community in Hukurila

Abstract

Marine debris is an environmental problem that has serious impacts on ecosystems, human health, and the social and economic aspects of coastal communities. Most marine debris originates from land-based activities carried by rivers to the sea, with plastic being the dominant component. Plastic debris is difficult to decompose, has the potential to become microplastics, and can pollute marine biota and enter the human food chain. The degradation of coastal ecosystems due to debris in the Maluku Islands is increasingly worrying, necessitating educational efforts through increasing marine debris literacy from an early age. A Community Service (PkM) activity by the Marine Science Study Program Team was carried out at Rehoboth Christian Elementary School, Ambon, with the aim of increasing students' knowledge and awareness of waste management based on the 3R principle. The implementation method included material socialization, interactive activities, and discussions. Participants were 45 students from grades I and II of Rehoboth Christian Elementary School, Ambon. The results of the activity showed enthusiasm and increased student understanding of the importance of protecting the marine environment, so it is hoped that they can play a role as agents of change in maintaining coastal cleanliness

Abstract

Saminyamau Village is one of the villages in Rao Island District, Morotai Island Regency, most of which have livelihoods as fishermen. Fishermen conducted an operation of catching around the waters of Saminyamau Village, around the fishing aids area, about 20 minutes from Saminyamau Village. The waters of Saminyamau Village have abundant fisheries resources and fish caught in this event are dominated by grouper, snapper, tuna, skipjack and flying fish. The problem encountered is that the people of Saminyamau Village use surface fishing aids to catch fish and surface fishing aids installed are still close to the coastline and the distance between fishing aids is still close. Fishing aids that are too close to each other can cause fish that are interested in gathering in one particular fishing aids, thereby reducing the effectiveness of other fishing aids. This can reduce the overall catch of fishermen.  The purpose of the implementation of this dedication activity is to provide knowledge and understanding of the benefits of the surface and basic fishing aids for the Saminyamau Village fishermen and increase public knowledge about the placement of fishing aids in the Fisheries Management Area. This activity was carried out in the form of counseling at Saminyamau Beach, Rao Island District, Morotai Island Regency which was attended by 60 people.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the community's knowledge and skills in processing coconuts into Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as a value-added product. The activity was carried out at the GPM Lumahpelu Congregation, Taniwel District, West Seram Regency, involving 20 participants. The methods used included preparation, counseling, and evaluation. The counseling was carried out through the delivery of material on the nutritional content of VCO and its potential as a functional food ingredient, and VCO processing techniques, supplemented by discussions and questions and answers. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge and understanding regarding the use of coconuts and the VCO production process.. Evaluation of the activity through questionnaires and interviews indicated that this program had a positive impact on increasing community capacity. This activity contributed to encouraging community empowerment and increasing the economic value of coconuts, although further mentoring is needed to ensure the sustainability of the VCO business development.
